To say that the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and the TCU Horned Frogs couldn’t dream of playing in the Poinsettia Bowl a few weeks ago is a bit of an understatement. La Tech probably never thought that it was going to end up winning the WAC, while TCU has to have had a hard time imagining its place in a bowl game outside of the BCS. Regardless, the two try to beat the Poinsettia Bowl betting lines in a standalone game on Wednesday.

And so we ask ourselves the age old question whether or not the Horned Frogs really want to be in this bowl game or not… It’s going to be a tough sell for sure, as there was a big difference between taking on either the Virginia Tech Hokies or Michigan Wolverines in the Superdome and the Bulldogs here in San Diego, a lot further away from home in the team’s final game before jumping to the Big XII next year.

The Horned Frogs absolutely play fantastic ball. They were only beaten by Heisman Trophy winning QB Robert Griffin III and the Baylor Bears and the SMU Mustangs this year, and there was no shame in either defeat. TCU also went on the road and picked up its biggest win since last year’s Rose Bowl, a 36-35 win at the gun over the Boise State Broncos on the Smurf Turf. TCU averaged 41.7 points per game this year and allowed just 21.2 points per game, but it is clear that this year’s team wasn’t nearly as good on either side of the ball as it was before QB Andy Dalton graduated last year.

So we ask ourselves whether we really think that the Bulldogs have the capability to win a game like this one or not. They did go 10-2 ATS this year, a fantastic sign for a team that is getting a slew of points. La Tech took the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles down to the wire, and they did so with the Houston Cougars and Mississippi State Bulldogs as well. That’s really saying something, as teams were routinely killed by those squads. This team also won five games on the road this year and played a total of seven, something that hardly anyone does successfully any longer these days.

In the end, we trust an offense led by RB Lennon Creer and a defense that held teams down to just 122.1 yards per game on the ground this year. This was a heck of a lot better Bulldogs team that you would probably have figured, and though the WAC was down this year, it wasn’t so far down that its champion won’t be able to at least put up a fight against some of the best teams in America. TCU can be had, and we think that it will at least be challenged in the Poinsettia Bowl.
