NIT Finals Betting Lines
#3 Iowa Hawkeyes -1
#2 Baylor Bears +1
Over/Under 141.5

Iowa and Baylor clearly took two very different paths to reach the NIT Finals, and it is clear that whichever team wins this game is going to be worthy of leaving Madison Square Garden with some hardware in tote. The Hawkeyes have made it here on the back of their defensive game being stout, and their offensive game hitting enough timely shots to get by. They haven’t allowed more than 64 points in a game since March 2nd, and they have averaged 69.4 points per game in that stretch. Though those numbers aren’t the most impressive in the land, considering the degree of competition that the Hawkeyes were given in most of these games, those marks truly are that good. Baylor meanwhile, continues to run up and down the court, as it averages over 82 points per game outside of conference play this season, including averaging 89.0 points per game in the NIT. G Pierre Jackson and F Cory Jefferson have been out of this world in this entire tournament, and G Brady Heslip is one of these players that can go on a 12-0 run by knocking down four three-point baskets in a row. However, in the end, Iowa was the most underrated team in this tournament, and it is going to prove it be finishing off the Big XII reps and claiming the NIT title in what should be a gritty game.

The time is here for more of our sparkling CBB picks, as we look at the schedule for basketball for Tuesday night. The Baylor Bears and BYU Cougars will have it the NIT Final Four, which can be seen on the college basketball TV schedule on ESPN.

NIT Final Four Picks: #3 BYU Cougars vs. #2 Baylor Bears
Date: Tuesday, April 2nd, 7:00 ET
Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
BYU vs. Baylor Live TV: ESPN

NIT Final Four Betting Lines
#3 BYU Cougars +3
#1 Baylor Bears -3
Over/Under 152.5

What really makes this game interesting on Tuesday night is that both of these teams are going to be poking holes in the other team’s weaknesses. Baylor has a guard in G Pierre Jackson that there just isn’t anyone that has the speed to keep up with him on the other side of the court. Jackson has had two straight double-doubles, and he has put up at least 20 points and at least 13 assists in each of those games. There isn’t a better shooter on the court than G Brady Heslip either. Heslip knocked down 12 triples in his first two games of the NIT, and he is largely known as one of the streakiest shooters in America. However, BYU is going to counter with a big man on the inside in F Brandon Davies and a lanky penetrating guard in G Tyler Haws that both can cause tremendous amounts of damage to opposing defenses. Baylor’s won be an exception. That being said, knowing that we have to pick a side in this one, we want the Bears. BYU was never really a team that figured to be anywhere near the NCAA Tournament this season, and every time it ran into some of the biggest and best teams in America, it failed. Its only massive win of this tournament came against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, and that Southern Miss outfit never beat a big time team in its own right all season long. Baylor has played with the big boys, and it knows how to get the job done, and we expect that it will do just that on Tuesday to move to the NIT Final.

BYU vs. Baylor Pick: Baylor Bears -3
NIT Final Four Predictions: Baylor 88 – BYU 79

NIT Quarterfinals Picks: #4 Providence Friars @ #2 Baylor Bears

Providence vs. Baylor Live TV: ESPN2

BetGuardian

Quarterfinals Betting Lines
#4 Providence Friars +9
#2 Baylor Bears -9
Over/Under 148.5

One could argue that the closest thing we’ve had to a Cinderella make it through two rounds of the NIT would be Providence, though the Friars hardly fit the bill as a team that came out of nowhere. Sure, they got a lot of help in the form of Robert Morris knocking off Kentucky to start this tournament off, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t deserving. In fact, we think that Providence really got the shaft with its tourney seeding here in the NIT, knowing that it pretty as good of a brand of basketball down the stretch of the season as any of these teams did in this tournament. G Bryce Cotton is continuing to tear things up, and others are basically taking turns around him getting the job done as well. Baylor has a great player in G Pierre Jackson ,who literally had his hands in 60 points either by scoring (26 points) or dishing out the basketball (16 assists) in a Round 2 win over Arizona State. That being said, even if Jackson does go off in this one and G Brady Heslip knocks down another slew of threes (he has 12 of them on just 20 attempts in this tournament), this is still a heck of a lot of points to be giving a solid Providence outfit. We think this game will be a lot closer than the experts think, and we wouldn’t be shocked if the Big East reps bested the boys from the Big XII.

Providence vs. Baylor Pick: Providence Friars +9
NIT Quarterfinals Predictions: Providence 70 – Baylor 68

Second Round NIT Betting Lines
#3 Arizona State Sun Devils +9
#2 Baylor Bears -9

Bettors overreact all the time to things that they see in just one game, and this is another example of a bad line that many are going to bet right into. The Bears came out in the NIT on Wednesday and absolutely laid the smack down on the Long Beach State 49ers, taking a big time first half and parlaying that with an even bigger second half to win their first round game by 46 points. Here’s the problem: Now, a team that really was good enough to be in the NCAA Tournament by itself is coming to town. The Sun Devils were probably ultimately underseeded in this tournament as a No. 3 seed, as they do have some big time wins in the Pac-12, a lot of which incidentally came on the road. Head Coach Herb Sendek and the crew were only favored by a few points on Wednesday against the Detroit Titans, but there was never really a doubt in the second half as to who the better of the two teams really was. The boys from the desert aren’t necessarily going to win this game, but they aren’t going to lose by double digits either. Baylor’s inconsistency is why it wasn’t in the NCAA Tournament this year. That inconsistency will shine through on Friday night.

First Round NIT Betting Lines
#7 Long Beach State 49ers +12.5
#2 Baylor Bears -12.5
Over/Under 149.5

The Bears have spent the mass majority of this season being one of the most vexing teams in America. They were always considered an NCAA Tournament caliber team, but they lost just far too many games to teams in the Big XII, some of which came at the bottom of the conference. Still, they beat teams like Oklahoma State and Kansas down the stretch, and they have a lot to be happy about going forward here in the NIT. Baylor also was a pretty darn good non-conference team this year to boot, winning games against a bunch of teams comparable to this one. Sure, there were some suspect defeats to teams like Charleston and Northwestern in the mix, but for the most part, the talent really has shown up. Long Beach State isn’t nearly as strong this year as it has been in recent years in the Big West, and that conference as a whole was a bit of a disaster. The only games that LBSU played this year against major conference teams ended as follows… 15 point loss to North Carolina, 22 point loss to Arizona, 31 point loss to Syracuse, 34 point loss to Ohio State, 19 point loss to UCLA. Seeing a trend here? We are, too.

The time is here for more of our sparkling CBB picks, as we look at the schedule for basketball for Thursday night. The Oklahoma State Cowboys and Baylor Bears will have it the Big XII Tournament Second Round, which can be seen on the college basketball TV schedule on Big XII Network.

Big XII Tournament Second Round Picks: Baylor Bears vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys
Date: Thursday, March 14th, 9:30 ET
Location: Sprint Center, Kansas City, MO
Baylor vs. Oklahoma State Live TV: Big XII Network

This is one of these games that could be brutal for the bubble. Oklahoma State clearly doesn’t have any troubles right now, knowing that it is going to be one of the top seeds in the NCAA Tournament. However, the rest of the bubble is going to be paying close attention, knowing that Baylor is going to be one of those teams that could play its way into the tourney, or play its way out. Losing this game would likely be the end of the season for the Bears, so this game is of utmost importance. The Cowboys have consistently been one of the highest scoring teams in the Big XII outside of Iowa State, and we think that it is ridiculous that they are only laying two and a half against a Baylor team that has been insanely inconsistent this year. When you look back at Baylor this year, the team just hasn’t beaten anyone notable. Sure, there was that blowout victory over Kansas to end the regular season, but the last win for the Bears of any note came way back on January 21st. We do have to note that Baylor beat Okie State and home and lost in overtime in Stillwater, but we think that this is a matter of revenge for the Cowboys, who will end the Bears’ season.

Baylor vs. Oklahoma State Pick: Oklahoma State Cowboys -2.5
Big XII Second Round Prediction: Oklahoma State 73 – Baylor 66

The Jayhawks and the Bears are teams that are going in vastly different directions. Kansas is hoping to get up to the top line in the NCAA Tournament, while the Bears are just trying to prove that they are good enough to get in the field of 68. Baylor once had a dynamite looking resume, but there are just too many losses on there right now to overcome the odds without a signature win. A loss to Kansas wouldn’t be damning, but it wouldn’t look great either, knowing that there are only potentially two more wins to get in the Big XII Tournament. It’ll be a tough sell to put this team on the line at 18-15 or 19-15. The problem that the Bears have is that they are going against a Kansas team that is just rolling everyone at the moment. The last seven that have taken their best shot at the Jayhawks have lost, though they have looked beatable at times in this run of games, especially on the road. Though we would love to give the nod to the Bears on Saturday, we just can’t do it. They’re not a good enough team to win this game more than half the time, even here in Waco, no matter the level of desperation. The Jayhawks are just underpriced.

Kansas vs. Baylor Pick: Kansas Jayhawks -3
Kansas vs. Baylor Prediction: Kansas 78 – Baylor 68

Baylor is a vintage bubble team right now, as it has just 17 wins against 12 losses, and it is running out of time to change the minds of the voters in the Selection Committee. Losing here against a 13-16 team would be bad news for the Bears, though obviously, the college basketball odds suggest that it is about a 50/50 proposition. The Longhorns with G Myck Kabongo in the lineup are obviously a heck of a lot better than they are without him, and that has been seen in some wins against teams like the Oklahoma Sooners (who swept Baylor) and the Iowa State Cyclones. It’s a dangerous game for a Baylor outfit that really wants to run, but probably won’t get the chance to in Austin. Without Kabongo in the fold, the Longhorns had the Bears dead to rights in Waco, losing 86-79 in overtime in a game in which UT committed 26 fouls and had two players foul out in the dying minutes of the game or in overtime. Baylor only had 12 whistles against it, and it still was only just barely able to win the game. Texas is 3-1 ATS in the last four in this series, and we think that it improves to 4-1 ATS in the last five with a win that is going to cripple the bubble chances of the Bears.

Baylor vs. Texas Pick: Texas Longhorns +1.5
Baylor vs. Texas Prediction: Texas 69 – Baylor 64

Baylor halted a three-game losing streak on Wednesday night by knocking off the West Virginia Mountaineers on the road. It was a nice win, but it’s not the type of win that is going to get the Bears into the NCAA Tournament. Baylor has a pair of home games left in Waco, clashes against the Wildcats and the Kansas Jayhawks, and at least one of those games has to be won if it is going to dance this year. The problem with this one is that KSU is clearly the better of the two teams. We really don’t think that the Bears are all that good any longer. They really don’t have any great wins under their belt, and they are playing against a team that whooped up on them by 20 points when these two teams met just two weeks ago. Not enough has changed in that stretch to make us think that this result is going to be all that much different. K-State doesn’t really need this win, but it would be a real nice one to have, knowing that the regular season Big XII title is still up for grabs. Go with the Wildcats.

Kansas State vs. Baylor Pick: Kansas State Wildcats +2.5

Okie State is now the talk of the town after it went on the road over the weekend and upset the Kansas Jayhawks at Allen Fieldhouse. This went from a team that could have been on the bubble to one that is definitively going to make the dance with just that one victory, even though it was the first win that the team had on the road all season long. Now it’s back home to take on a Baylor team that could be floating around on the bubble as well. We’re puzzled by the relatively low ‘total’ in this game. If you look back at the last three Baylor games, they have reached 150, 145, and 138 points. If you see the last few Okie State games, you see 185, 154, and 146 points. Sure, both of these teams have the ability to play some defense, but we still think that the offense’s values overshadow all. Don’t believe us? Just look at that 85 that the Pokes put up on the Jayhawks, who arguably have the best defensive team in America. Look at that 64-54 meeting from when these two teams played each other the first time around as a face, as there should be a heck of a lot more on the board this time around when these two go at it tonight.

The time is here for more of our sparkling CBB picks, as we look at the schedule for basketball for Monday night. The Kansas Jayhawks and Baylor Bears will have it in a nationally televised game, which can be seen on the college basketball TV schedule on ESPN.

Free College Hoops Picks: Baylor Bears @ Kansas Jayhawks
Date: Monday, January 14th, 9:00 ET
Location: Phog Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence, KS
Baylor vs. Kansas Live TV: ESPN

The Bears know that they have a great opportunity here to at least push the Jayhawks in the Phog on Monday night. The road team is 13-1 ATS in the last 14 games in this series, and Baylor is 7-1 ATS in its last eight trips here to Lawrence. These two teams are undefeated in conference play at this point, though neither has really played any of the elite teams in the conference quite yet. G Pierre Jackson has had a great career in Waco, and he is averaging 19.2 points per game this year. The question is going to be how the Jayhawks are going to stop C Isaiah Austin and F Cory Jefferson. These two are combining to average 28.9 points and 16.8 boards per game this year, and they have also blocked 50 shots between them. We know that C Jeff Withey will get the matchup with one of them, but will F Kevin Young be able to stick around with the other? That’s the real question. Don’t be shocked if the Bears are able to sneak into the Phog and get out of town with a victory. This is a whole heck of a lot of points to be giving a very good team that has the ability to beat anyone in the nation.

Baylor vs. Kansas Pick: Baylor Bears +10

The Bears have been all over the place this year, as they have some fantastic wins (i.e. @ Kentucky) and some horrid losses (i.e. vs. Charleston). They have had games where they have scored 97 points (St. John’s) and games in which they have scored 59 (Charleston). They’ve allowed as many as 78 (St. John’s) or as few in a reasonable game as 55 (Kentucky). Meanwhile, the Zags have been a heck of a lot more consistent, really only falling over one bump in the road over the course of the season. They were beaten by Illinois in the last major game played here at the Kennel 85-74, but since that point, they have fired back with easy blowouts over Kansas State and Campbell. The club is 11-3 ATS in its last 14 home games as well, and that’s more than good enough for us to want to back a team that we really think could legitimately be in the Final Four this year when push comes to shove. Gonzaga is 2-0 SU and 1-1 ATS in two games against the Bears in school history, and this is the time to add to those marks.

Baylor vs. Gonzaga Pick: Gonzaga Bulldogs
Baylor vs. Gonzaga Prediction: Gonzaga 81 – Baylor 68
