I’ve been studying the ‘total’ for the Little Caesars Bowl odds for quite some time, and I’m ready to make my Little Caesars Bowl picks for the clash between the Central Michigan Chippewas and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. The Western Kentucky vs. Central Michigan kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Ford Field in Detroit, MI, and I’m going to show you which way to bet on college football to make your CFB pick on for this great game.

2012 Little Caesars Bowl
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (7-5, 8-4 ATS) -5.5
Central Michigan Chippewas (6-6, 5-7 ATS) +5.5
Over/Under 57.5

It shouldn’t be considered all that surprising that the early bowl games have seemingly all gone past the ‘total’. As a result, some of the bowl games are featuring rising ‘totals’. This is one of these games that has gotten just a bit too high in my eyes, and I think that this is a game that is just inflated too high.

The Hilltoppers only averaged 28.8 points per game this year, and down the stretch, they didn’t score more than 29 points in a game over the course of their last five outings. They probably shouldn’t be in a bowl game, but in fairness, Central Michigan really shouldn’t either. The Chippewas averaged 29.2 points per game this year, but they had a woeful defense that really cost them against some of the best teams in the MAC. There is some talent on this team for sure, knowing that QB Ryan Radcliff is a three-year starting quarterback and RB Zurlon Tipton accounted for 20 TDs on the campaign. Western Kentucky is going to be playing under a lot of stress with Head Coach Bobby Petrino watching from the stands, ready to take over the team after this one is said and done with.

I really just don’t think much of the Chippewas in this game. They averaged just 21.8 points per game against bowl teams this year, while Western Kentucky averaged just 23.8 points per game against bowl games in 2012. Granted, we probably should take out the game against the Alabama Crimson Tide in which WKU was shut out. They averaged 31.7 points per game in the other three outings, but even if you add these two numbers together, I just don’t see this one getting to the number. I expect to see this game getting into the low-50s or so.

This is a game that truly drives us crazy, knowing that neither of these teams had any business being in a bowl game this year. That being said, we’re stuck at this point handicapping this awful game, and we have no choice but to look over two teams that really had very little good going for them over the course of the season. Western Kentucky played the more difficult of these two schedules, but the team lost four of its last six games to finish out the campaign at 7-5. Still, that was good enough to come to a bowl game this year for the first time in school history.

Bovada Sportsbook

The Chippies are back for the first time in a bowl game since 2010, but they clearly don’t deserve it and would have been left out any other year after going 6-6 and clearly being no more than the seventh best team in the MAC. That being said, this is a team that does have the ability to score some points at times, as RB Zurlon Tipton and QB Ryan Radcliffe are both solid players. Tipton rushed for 1,391 yards and 19 TDs on the campaign, and Radcliffe threw for 2,895 yards and 20 scores against nine picks. Radcliff is making his final start as a senior, and he needs another 105 yards to reach the 3,000 yard mark for the third straight year.

In the end, we’re going to take Central Michigan and the points in this game because we think that both of these teams stink. Yes, the Hilltoppers are going to be amped up, knowing that they are about to be coached by a legitimate SEC caliber coach in Bobby Petrino and that they are playing in a bowl game for the very first time. However, this game is played at Ford Field, and the little “home field advantage” there will be will be held by the Chippewas. We do think that WKU is going to win this game, but in the end, we still want the points on our side.

Week 7 College Football Picks: Navy Midshipmen @ Central Michigan Chippewas
Date: Friday, October 12th, 8:00 ET
Location: Kelly Shorts Stadium, Mount Pleasant, MI
CFB Betting Odds: Navy -3.5
Navy @ Central Michigan Live TV: ESPN2

If you’re a fan of two teams that are going to probably end up running up and down the field, this is probably the game for you. The Midshipmen are literally going to be doing the running, knowing that they are a triple option team with very little in the way of a threat to throw it. QB Trey Miller is going to be doing a lot of the carrying of the rock, and it is his job and his job alone to make sure that the ball gets moving. Meanwhile, RB Zurlon Tipton is going to be the man that gets the ball a lot in this one. He has 447 rushing yards and a total of seven touchdown for an offense that has the potential to be quite potent under QB Ryan Radcliff. Though the Chippies have the better team, they also only have a total of four days to prepare for the triple option, which they haven’t seen since 2010. Expect to see Navy to get a ‘W’ on Friday night.

Navy @ Central Michigan Pick: Navy -3.5

Matchup: Western Michigan Broncos @ Central Michigan Chippewas
Date: Friday, November 5th, 6:00 ET
Location: Kelly/Shorts Stadium, Mount Pleasant, MI
Game Line: Central Michigan -3.5
Over/Under 51.5

It’s the battle of the Directional Michigan schools on Friday night in Mt. Pleasant, when the 3-5 Western Michigan Broncos take on the 2-7 Central Michigan Chippewas. Both Western Michigan and Central Michigan are having down seasons after being atop the MAC West over the past few years. Central Michigan greatly misses All-MAC QB Dan LeFevour and HC Butch Jones. New QB Ryan Radcliff has failed to match LeFevour’s vast production, completing 58.6% of his passes for 2342 yards with 12 touchdowns and 15 interceptions thus far this season. Last week in the Chippewas’ 17-14 loss to Bowling Green, Radcliff completed 14 of 25 passes for 132 yards with a touchdown and an interception. On the positive side, RB Paris Cotton looked good against the Falcons, carrying the ball 23 times for 111 yards. As for Western Michigan, QB Alex Carder hasn’t been much of a step down from QB Tim Hiller this season. Last week, Carder was able to throw all over the Northern Illinois defense, completing 31 of 53 passes for 360 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions and came close to leading the Broncos to a victory over the division leading Huskies before falling 28-21. WR Jordan White was the primary target most of the day, catching 14 balls for 180 yards and a score.

Matchup: UCF Knights @ Houston Cougars
Date: Friday, November 5th, 8:00 ET
Location: John O’Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium, Houston, TX
Game Line: Houston -1.5
Over/Under 61.5

A possible preview of the Conference USA will take place Friday night when the 6-2 UCF Knights travel to Houston to take on the 5-3 Cougars. UCF has won four straight conference games to take sole possession of first place atop the C-USA East standings. They are led on offense by the backfield duo of RB Ronnie Weaver and QB Jeff Godfrey. Godfrey has done very well since taking over for QB Ryan Calabrese, and the dual threat freshman has taken great strides since winning the job. In last week’s big 49-35 win against East Carolina, Godfrey completed 8 of 12 passes for 159 yards with two touchdowns. Weaver and fellow RB Latavius Murray had a huge game on the ground for the Knights, combining to carry the rock for 227 yards and five touchdowns in the victory. Houston has turned its team remarkably in a short amount of time after losing Heisman Trophy contending QB Case Keenum and backup QB Cotton Turner in a loss to UCLA early in the season. In the last two weeks, the Cougars have scored huge wins against SMU and Memphis to put them in a tie for first atop C-USA West. Last week against Memphis, Houston dominated the game from start to finish, rushing out to a 35-3 halftime lead en route to a 56-17 victory. QB David Piland had a fantastic day, completing 20 of 23 passes for 292 yards and five touchdowns and RB Michael Hayes added 123 yards and a touchdown on the ground. This is an extremely important game for both teams so expect a hard fought affair.

Temple Owls (-8) vs. Central Michigan Chippewas
Thursday, September 9th
7:00 ET, Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA

The Owls were just able to squeak out a 31-24 win last week against a powerful FBS team in Villanova that came close to upsetting them for the second straight year. Temple was down late in the fourth, but K Brandon McManus hit his fourth field goal of the game to put HC Al Golden and the Owls ahead for good with just eight seconds left. QB Chester Stewart managed the game well for the Owls, completing 16 of 27 passes for 200 yards with a touchdown. In their first game without former all-everything QB Dan LeFevour, the Chippewas and new QB Ryan Radcliff cruised to a 33-0 win over lowly FBS Hampton. Radcliff headed a Chippewa offense that racked up 427 total yards of offense on the day and completed 20 of 34 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown while also running for a score. RB Paris Cotton also impressed with 94 yards rushing and a TD on 18 carries. Some love should also be given to the CMU defense for holding Hampton to a paltry 129 total yards of offense on the day.

Prediction: Temple 28 – Central Michigan 17

#20 Auburn Tigers (-1.5) @ Mississippi State Bulldogs
Thursday, September 9th
7:45 ET, Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field, Starkville, MS

The Bulldogs looked extremely impressive in their win against Memphis last week, but face their first real test of the season when #20 Auburn comes into Starkville on Thursday night. HC Dan Mullen has the faithful energized after the team’s dominating performance in their 49-7 thumping of Memphis last week. The Bulldogs offense racked up 569 total yards and dominated Memphis in all facets of the game. QB Tyler Russell was particularly impressive, completing 13 of 16 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns while he was in the game. However, the Tigers of Auburn are a big step up from the ones out of the Volunteer State. Whereas Memphis may be the worst team in Conference USA this year, Auburn has a legitimate shot at an SEC West title with a talented roster and the offensive of guru Gus Malzahn. Despite two turnovers, the Auburn offense still put up 600+ yards of total offense in a 52-26 romp of Arkansas State. QB Cam Newton was studly in the win, completing nine of 14 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns while also carrying the ball for 171 yards and two scores. Although the Bulldogs are certainly improving under Mullen, look for Auburn to show they are still above them on the SEC West pecking chain.

Prediction: Auburn 30 – Mississippi State 20
