Chick-Fil-A Bowl Picks: LSU Tigers vs. Clemson Tigers
Date: Saturday, December 31st, 7:30 ET
Location: Georgia Dome, Atlanta, GA
Chick-Fil-A Bowl Betting Odds: LSU -6
LSU vs. Clemson Live TV Coverage: ESPN

The last game of the calendar year kicks off on New Year’s Eve, and it’s going to be quite the Tiger Tale. This is actually the second time this year that Clemson has taken on some Tigers from the SEC, and it disposed of the Auburn Tigers in the opening game of the year. That being said, few knew that that victory wouldn’t look so good at the end of the campaign. LSU probably has the problem with motivation in this game. The team could have been in the Sugar Bowl had the Florida Gators lost their final regular season game of the year against the Florida State Seminoles, but instead, a 10-2 team that will likely finish the year ranked in the Top 5 in America is stuck playing here in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl before New Year’s Day.

Here’s the problem with backing the ACC reps, though. The orange and purple clad Tigers really didn’t beat anyone all season long. They were smacked by the Florida State Seminoles on the road, and were dominated defensively by the South Carolina Gamecocks at home. Aside from that, there were a bunch of wins against a bunch of nobodies, and that seven-point win over Auburn in this building, as we already said, doesn’t really look all that spectacular. Remember last year as well, that Clemson was crushed by the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Orange Bowl and were handled by 21 by the Gamecocks in Columbia. This isn’t a team that is suited to play in the big time games, and that really goes without saying.

As long as LSU wants to be in this game, it will do well. The Bayou Bengals are 9-1 here at the Chick-Fil-A Bowl all-time, and they were clearly the better of these two teams this year. The SEC is likely going to dominate once again in bowl games this year, and we have already seen some teams from the ACC fall flat and either lose games badly (Duke) or win games that should have been lost (Virginia Tech). Look for the defense for Head Coach Les Miles to come out and get some payback for last year’s loss in the BCS National Championship Game. This shouldn’t be a game that ends up being all that close when push comes to shove.

The Chick-Fil-A Bowl kickoff starts at 7:30 p.m. ET at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA, and I’m going to be your expert college football handicapper that points you towards the winning bet for the Clemson vs. LSU game.

2012 Chick-Fil-A Bowl
LSU Tigers (10-2, 5-7 ATS) -6
Clemson Tigers (10-2, 8-4 ATS) +6
Over/Under 59

If you just blindly look at the Bayou Bengals, you have to think that this game should easily stay beneath a ‘total’ of 59. The last time that a ‘total’ was this high in an LSU game was back in 2008 against the North Texas Mean Green, and that came in a game where the Tigers were favored by 42 points against a team with an exciting offense. However, there are definitely some things that I really don’t like about LSU right now. I don’t like the fact that P Brad Wing has been suspended for this one, and that really could give the Clemson offense the upper hand in certain situations.

Of course, one look at Clemson, and this is a game that should get beyond the number quite easily. The Tigers played to 110 points against the NC State Wolfpack, and they put up an average of 46.5 points per game this year against teams outside of the SEC. Of course, the team also only put up a total of 43 points in two games against SEC teams. QB Tajh Boyd threw for 3,550 yards and 34 TDs, and he rushed for 492 yards and nine scores. RB Andre Ellington was one of the top rushers in the ACC with 1,034 yards and eight trips to the end zone, while the team’s top two receivers, WR DeAndre Hopkins and WR Sammy Watkins, totaled just under 2,000 yards. Hopkins, the ACC all-time leader in receiving yards in a career, had 16 touchdowns as well.

And then there’s the tiebreaker: Last year’s bowl game. Clemson gave up 70 points to the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Orange Bowl, and it was blown out of the water. LSU is clearly going to be smarting after getting shut out last year in the BCS National Championship Game, and it is going to want to prove to the rest of the world that it has a team that can contend for all of the marbles once again next year. I think that QB Zach Mettenberger can put up some respectable numbers in this game, and the end result is going to push this one beyond the number.

The Chick-Fil-A Bowl has become one of the most recognizable games on the bowl schedule on a regular basis, as it is always the last one that is played before the strike of midnight on New Year’s Eve. Historically, this is the one oddball game that pits the SEC up against the ACC in which the ACC teams do rather well. Last year, it was the Florida State Seminoles that knocked off the South Carolina Gamecocks, and that marked the second straight season in which the ACC really blew out the SEC. This year, if it happens, it is going to be up to the UVA defense to slow down the offense of the defending national champs, though we all know that the Tigers look like a shell of the team that won the title last season.

That being said, Auburn probably overachieved this year to finish at 7-5. Many remember how the Utah State Aggies had the Tigers dead to rights at Jordan Hare Stadium in Week 1, and many were set to castrate the team because of it. Little did they know that USU was set to be one of the best teams in the WAC and went on to have one of the most efficient offenses in the nation. Add that to the typical SEC West schedule, and it was true that the year was brutal for the Tigers. That being said, they really lost their identity as a dangerous offensive team when QB Cam Newton went to the pros, as OC Gus Malzahn just didn’t have the talent to work with. That talent is going to get slashed dramatically in this game, as last year’s BCS National Championship superhero RB Michael Dyer has been suspended and won’t be in the fold. Gone are over 1,200 rushing yards and a third of the team’s offensive touchdowns for the campaign. RB Onterio McCalebb has potential, but 532 rushing yards and 291 receiving yards on the year just don’t add up to the 1,242 rushing yards and 10 scores that Dyer produced.

Virginia’s offense was efficient this year and surprisingly averaged 23.2 points per game in spite of the fact that seemingly every game in the ACC this year seemingly ended with about 30 total points on the scoreboard. Sure, the regular season ended with disappointment when the Cavvies were shut out by their hated rivals, the Virginia Tech Hokies in the de facto Coastal Division title game. However, their win on the road at the Florida State Seminoles proved that they have the ability to get the job done against some of the best teams in the nation when the defense is really getting to the quarterback. The ground game help keeps games short for UVA, but the real story was the defense, which had kept four straight teams to 21 points or fewer before getting blasted by the Hokies.

That being said, we just don’t think that Auburn really has the goods to get the job done without Dyer. We think that the speed on the Cavaliers’ defense is too much, and unless McCalebb can bust some runs or passes to the outside, there just isn’t that explosive potential for the Tigers. Take the points for sure and watch as the ACC makes it three in a row in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.

College football historians remember the days when a young buck name Steve Spurrier was leading the Florida Gators into battle against the Florida State Seminoles each and every year. He's traded in his blue and orange visor for a red and black one, and he is set to face his old nemesis for the first time since leaving Gainesville when he brings his South Carolina Gamecocks into the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.

Chick-Fil-A Bowl Matchup: South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Florida State Seminoles

Chick-Fil-A Bowl Line: South Carolina -3
Over/Under 54.5

Gamecocks Notes: It was a year of firsts for the Gamecocks. They went into the Swamp in Gainesville with the Head Ball Coach and beat the Gators for the first time, and as a result, they went to the SEC Championship Game for the first time as well. Sure, SC was destroyed by the Auburn Tigers, but we're quite possibly talking about the BCS National Champions here that killed them. QB Stephen Garcia really took a major stride and was the difference maker in the game in which the Gamecocks beat the BCS Champions, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Garcia ended up throwing for 2,816 yards and 20 TDs against 11 picks this year, and he clearly had a breakout season. Of course, it really helps when you have a 6'5" target in WR Alshon Jeffrey to throw to. Jeffrey is really one of the best receivers in the land, and he showed his worth this year, catching 79 passes for 1,387 yards and nine trips to the end zone. This was a well balanced attack though, as RB Marcus Lattimore was a real workhorse. He rumbled 40 times in a game against the Gators, and he ended up carrying the football 248 times this year. Lattimore had 1,198 yards and 17 scores on the ground, and he was third on the team in receiving with 26 grabs, 364 yards, and two more TDs. This was a defense that was tremendous against the rush but horrid against the pass. The Cocks allowed less than 70 yards per game this year on the ground to every team save the Auburn Tigers, but the unit also gave up 253.6 yards per game through the air, ranking just No. 108 in the land.

Seminoles Notes: The Noles made it back to the ACC Championship Game for the second time in school history this year, but this time around, the Virginia Tech Hokies got the best of them and dropped them into the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Still, the garnet and gold aren't going to mind, as they really did have a great first season under the direction of new Head Coach Jimbo Fisher. FSU still has its problems and it isn't quite back to a position where it can dominate the ACC, but it is getting there. Allowing 347.9 yards per game this year is a marked improvement from a team that allowed over 400 yards per game a year ago. Still, there were some lapses this year against teams like the Virginia Tech Hokies, Oklahoma Sooners, and North Carolina Tar Heels that really hurt. When this team allowed more than 20 points, it went 0-4 SU and ATS. When it allowed 19 or fewer, it went 9-0 SU and 7-2 ATS. QB Christian Ponder is likely to be on the lineup after missing the ACC Championship Game with a bursa sac injury in his throwing elbow. He's going to need to improve upon his 20 TDs against eight picks on the year to make sure that the Noles can get going against this SC defense.

The Final Word: South Carolina really needs to have this game to carry some momentum into next season. Everything does set up perfectly for this crew, as there are plenty of returning members next year. However, if there is one knock of the Cocks, it is that they haven't played well in bowl games under Spurrier. Fisher had a great first year with FSU, and it would be pivotal to end this season with a 'W' to carry some mo' into 2011 as well. However, Carolina is the team that will snare it on New Year's Eve with its well balanced offensive attack.
