This series has officially gotten chippy. The Warriors have made their complaints that they are getting knocked around far too much in this series, and Head Coach Mark Jackson almost sounded like he was complaining a bit too much in defeat following Game 5 over at the Pepsi Center. Now, his team has to be feeling the pressure. It is starting to get the best efforts of the Nuggets on the defensive end of the court, and if that keeps up, it is going to take a remarkable effort from G Stephen Curry and G Klay Thompson to get the job done. If you’re Golden State, you also have to think that your season comes down to this game. This isn’t Game 6. This may as well be Game 7. If you think that Denver is tough to beat on a regular basis, imagine how tough it must be to beat this team at home in a Game 7? Over 70% of the betting action is coming in on the Warriors at a svelte -1, and that’s telling us that they are the wrong side in this game. Denver is good enough to go on the road, as we have seen all season long in places like Oklahoma City, Chicago, and the likes. For as great of a season as it has been for the Warriors, they don’t have a 22-point third quarter coming from Curry in this game. This is one that will be won by the Nuggs to send this series back to the Rockies for a decisive game this weekend.

One might think that it is a little odd to see the Warriors as 7.5-point underdogs in spite of the fact that they have literally dominated the three most recent games in this series, but we have to remember that though this is a series, Game 5 itself is just one game in a bottle. When you take away all of what you saw over the course of the last week or so, what’s left is a Denver team that is still 39-4 SU and 28-15 ATS this season when playing at home. The Nuggets were always a significantly better home team than a road team, and it wasn’t all that surprising to us that they ended up losing both of the games at Oracle Arena. In fact, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to us if they did ultimately end up losing the series right here at home. However, we have to play the percentages, and those percentages say that the hot shooting Warriors simply can’t keep this pace up. Sure, G Stephen Curry is going to have quarters like he did in the third quarter on Sunday in which he scored a whopping 22 points all by himself, and when that happens, you just have to find a way to stick with him shot for shot as a team. Denver has a knack for doing just that with some of the best teams in the league, and Golden State will be no exception. We have to think that this is a game that the Nuggets end up winning by double digits significantly more often than not.

Do the Nuggets really have a shot to go down 3-1 in this series? It really seems like Golden State is almost becoming a bit square when we think about it. Sure, there is a lot of justification for it, knowing that G Stephen Curry is literally shooting the ball out of the gym at the moment and that home court advantage has been tremendously important, but when push comes to shove, we have to remember that Denver is definitively the better of the two teams that will be on the court. Head Coach George Karl has to keep reminding his team of that fact, and it has to play like it. We really haven’t seen the Nuggets put together a full game at this point in this series. We saw a great first half against Golden State in which they put up 66 points and ultimately a 12-point lead in the third quarter, but that lead went by the wayside thanks to the hot shooting that Curry brought to the table. With apologies to the Golden State faithful, we just don’t see how that is continuing. After three straight covers in this series as underdogs, it is high time that the Nuggs come out and get the job done in a game as they are supposed to do as the favored team in this series, and home court advantage will flip back to Denver with a win for the visitors on Sunday night.

The Nuggets and the Warriors played four times against each other this year, and the home team won three of the four meetings. The one exception was the first game of the year when the Nuggs went on the road and won at Oracle Arena in overtime. The key to this series is going to be the play of the Denver perimeter defense. Don’t think that Head Coach George Karl doesn’t know that this is the only way that Golden State is going to win this game. G Stephen Curry can shoot around any defense in the game, but he is a lot more efficient playing at home than he is on the road. Golden State only went 19-22 SU and 19-21-1 ATS away from Oracle Arena this year, and there is no reason to think that it is going to be able to get the job done at the Pepsi Center against one of the best home teams in the league. Home court advantage has always been the key for winning games for the Nuggets, who went 38-3 SU and 28-13 ATS at home and averaged over 108 points per game. We aren’t so sure that Denver is going to get to that point total in this game, but it isn’t going to have to. We think that Golden State is going to look like a deer in headlights in opening game of this series, and it will probably get blown away.

The Nuggets are still trying to make that one last push to perhaps win the Northwest Division and maybe even end up with the No. 1 overall seed in the Western Conference as well. Winning this game would be of paramount importance for that to happen though, because there are only five games left in the season and still four games to make up. Many are going to hop right on the Denver bandwagon, but we think that this is a poor time for that to happen. The oddsmakers are onto the fact that the Nuggets are seemingly unbeatable at home, and so is Head Coach Gregg Popovich. This could be one of those games where he tries to make a big time statement. With both G Ty Lawson and F Danilo Gallinari out for the Nuggs, the lineup could be a bit sparse, while we know that San Antonio’s depth, even if C DeJuan Blair doesn’t play, should be good enough to field a team that expects to win this game. The last time Denver lost a game at home was back on January 18th, the longest such streak in the league, but we think that Wednesday night is the end of that. The Spurs are going to come to town and prove to the rest of the league that they are indeed capable of being the No. 1 seed in the West, and they can come on the road and beat anyone in their building as well.

What a tough task the Nuggets are going to have in this one. They went on the road last night to the United Center and beat the Chicago Bulls in a very tough overtime game. The two teams ran up and down the court for 53 minutes, and in the end, there were nearly 200 total shots taken from the field. Now, after traveling for a couple of hours to get to the Sooner State, the Thunder, arguably the best team in the Western Conference are right around the corner. Denver’s struggles on the road have been well-documented. The team is just 16-19 SU and 18-16-1 ATS this season away from the Pepsi Center. In situations where Denver is has had to play back to back road games on consecutive nights, it is just 1-6 and 3-4 ATS this season. The one win came against the Charlotte Bobcats. Wee. Oklahoma City is now 6-0 SU and 5-1 ATS in its last six games in which it has scored at least 100 points. For the season, the Thunder are 7-11 SU and 2-14-2 ATS when they don’t score 100 points in a game and 43-6 SU and 38-11 ATS when they do reach triple digits. If you want to carry that back some to last postseason, OKC is at 53-8 SU and 47-14 ATS in its last 61 games when scoring at least 100 points. That’s a lot of strikes against the Nuggets in this one, and they aren’t going to be able to overcome it.

We know that the Nuggets are amongst the best teams in the Western Conference this year, and we know that they cover are a tremendous SU and ATS team when playing here at the Pepsi Center, too. However, laying 8.5 points against a great team like the Knicks seems to be a bit much, especially given the circumstances surrounding the game. New York is as healthy as it is going to get at this point, and there is no doubt that F Carmelo Anthony, in spite of the fact that he has been dealing with a troublesome knee, is going to be out for blood against his former team. This is actually the first time that Anthony has been back in Denver since the blockbuster trade two years ago that sent him to the Big Apple, and it is the first time that New York has been here since December 2010. The Knicks got their awful game out of the way two nights ago when they were blasted by the Golden State Warriors by 29 points in one of the worst offensive games any team has had this year. They’ll be better in this one and at least stick inside of a huge number.

Any time we have a team that is playing the second half of a back to back on the road in Denver, we always love the spot. This isn’t an exception. The Clippers played last night against the Milwaukee Bucks in a game that was up and down the court and featured almost 170 shots from the field. Now, LA has to travel overnight to get to Denver for this one, a nationally televised game against one of the toughest teams to play in the league. The Nuggets run with pace, and they do it a ton, especially at home, where they are a whopping 26-3 this season. On top of that, Denver is as hot as could be, taking down six straight games both from an SU and an ATS perspective, and it isn’t likely to be beaten in this one. Though this could be a close game for three quarters, we just don’t know how the Clips are going to respond to being in a second straight high flying game this deep into the season against a team that is just going to continue to run for the full 48 minutes. Lay the short NBA point spread with the hosts.

Normally speaking, when the Nuggets are playing at home, especially when they are in such a tight and important game as this one is, we’re all over them. Tonight though, we’re going to go after the ‘over’ instead, knowing that there really should be no way that this one doesn’t get into at least the 220s or the 230, and maybe even a heck of a lot more. We’ll start with recent history. The two meetings this year reached 239 and 214 points, and both games flew past the ‘total’. Oklahoma City has scored 119, 102, 127, and 119 points in its last four games, and in those outings, it is shooting a blistering 51.7 percent from the field. Denver’s last four games have featured 111, 119, 113, and 113 points, and it has made at least 44 shots from the floor in three straight games. These types of shooting percentages don’t happen on accident. There’s no way that we can do anything but play the ‘over’ until we see either of these two teams calm down. This should be a track meet from the get go, and it wouldn’t surprise us if this one looked more like an All-Star Game than an NBA regular season game in March.

Until we find out the status of F Danilo Gallinari, the NBA odds are going to stay off the board. Regardless as to whether Denver’s leading scorer is going to be on the court or not though, we still think that this is going to be a game that goes to the hosts. The Nuggets are obviously a tremendously worse road team (12-19 SU, 16-15 ATS) than a home team (24-3 SU, 18-9 ATS), and they have gone just 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS over the course of their last five road games. On top of that, the Blazers are still a tremendous home team (18-9 SU, 13-12-2 ATS) in spite of their overall record. They topped the Boston Celtics and have played two very strong games in a row against some of the top teams in the league. We think that G Damian Lillard is one of the best budding point guards in the league, and the top five scorers on this team are all superstars in their own right. It’s going to be tough to run with the Nuggets, but the truth of the matters is that the home team has always dominated in this series. Denver is just 1-5 ATS in its last six meetings here at the Rose Garden, and the home team is now 14-3 ATS in the last 17 meetings (not to mention 16-1 SU in those 17 games). Roll with Portland on Wednesday night.

The way that G Ty Lawson and the rest of this team are playing offensively, there might not be a way to slow this club down, especially here at home. Denver is going to be a sneaky team to play in the second half of the season, and this could be the first of several games that the team ends up winning by a comfortable margin in the run to the playoffs.

It’s not going to be a good night to be a Bull on Thursday. Chicago is coming to the West Coast off of a tough loss to the Indiana Pacers on Monday night, and it is going to do so without at least G Kirk Hinrich, who is out with an elbow infection. C Joakim Noah is very much so up in the air for this game with a foot injury, and if he doesn’t play, it’s going to be tough to put a body up against C Kenneth Faried and the rest of the Denver bigs. In fact, the Nuggets are surprisingly the top rebounding team in the NBA, and thanks to the fact that they are hitting the glass and flying up and down the court, they are averaging over 113 points per game during this seven-game winning streak. They allowed a whopping 100 shots on Tuesday night to the Milwaukee Bucks and still found a way to win the game by eight to cover their third in a row as well. This is just a bad matchup for Chicago. The team isn’t going to be able to slow Denver down, and it isn’t going to be winning the battle on the boards, and when those two things don’t happen for Head Coach Tom Thibodeau, there is a bad result coming.
