The Packers and the 49ers fought it out already once this year, but that was way back in Week 1. The Niners won that game 30-22, and they were definitively the better of these two teams. But has that truly stayed the case? We have a huge question about that when push comes to shove, especially knowing that we have a veteran quarterback that has a number of playoff games going against a de facto rookie in QB Colin Kaepernick, who has played just a handful of games in his career as a starter that has had to go wire to wire.

The Packers really weren’t challenged in their first playoff game this year against the Minnesota Vikings, especially knowing that QB Christian Ponder sat it out, leaving QB Joe Webb to try his best to compete. They didn’t get a great contribution from their running game, and they really need to get things going on the ground to try to keep LB Aldon Smith off of QB Aaron Rodgers’ backside. Rodgers has now thrown for over 4,500 yards in 17 games including the playoffs, and he has himself a heck of a set of receivers. Another week of practice might make the team’s leading receiver, WR Randall Cobb healthier, and if he can get back to 100%, that would make this unit a heck of a lot more dangerous. Defensively, we know that LB Clay Matthews is ready to make a huge impact. He started his season with 2.5 sacks in this game against San Fran, and he had two more sacks on Saturday night against the Vikes.

We’re just really not all that optimistic about the chances for the 49ers in this one. The team has been outscored by a margin of 36 points over the course of its last two and a half games. As it is, the Packers are playing great ball. They’re scoring points at will, and this is starting to really feel like it is setting up well for them. Green Bay already got to face Webb, and now comes Kaepernick, and then if this one is won, beyond that will be either a second home game in the NFC Championship Game or a trip to the Georgia Dome to face the Atlanta Falcons, who still at this point, have never won a playoff game under the direction of QB Matt Ryan and Head Coach Mike Smith. It’s time for some payback for the Pack, and they’ll get the job done with an upset on the road in what might be the de facto NFC Championship Game when push comes to shove.

The NFL playoff schedule is out for this week, and today, I’m set to make my NFL playoffs pointspread picks for the ‘total’ in this crucial clash. The Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers are going to do battle at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, CA. Join me for my Divisional Round playoffs tips for this 8:00 p.m. ET kickoff that can be seen on FOX.

The Packers and the 49ers combined for 52 points the first time that they ran into each other, and they are going to be involved in what could be a high scoring playoff game once again. I’m actually a bit surprised that the initial line movement sent this game down from 46 to 45, and I think that this is going to be a situation where the oddsmakers made a big time mistake.

Wild Card Playoff Picks
Green Bay Packers (12-5, 10-7 ATS) +3
San Francisco 49ers (11-4-1, 9-7 ATS) -3

The Packers have been out of this world offensively over the course of the last few weeks. The squad put up 24 points last week against the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the playoffs. They have now put up at least 21 points in six straight games and have averaged 30.7 points per game in that stretch. QB Aaron Rodgers and the gang have a history of playing some tremendously high scoring games in the playoffs as well. Last year’s loss to the New York Giants featured 57 points, and prior to that, the Super Bowl in 2011 saw 56 hit the board, and the second round game against the Atlanta Falcons had 69 points in it. In each of the team’s last nine playoff games, dating back to when QB Brett Favre was calling the shots, the Pack have put up at least 20 points, and they have averaged 30.2 points per game in that run. With Rodgers as the team’s quarterback, the Packers have averaged 30.0 points per game.

There really is no reason to believe that the 49ers aren’t going to be able to put up some points as well. Last year, QB Alex Smith and the game played in a 68-point shootout against the New Orleans Saints. Now, the team has scored at least 27 points in five of the seven starts that QB Colin Kaepernick has played in. I know that both of these defense can be great, but I also know that the history of this series suggests a high scoring game as well. Not only did this year’s game see 52 hit the board, but four straight games have featured at least 49 points. I only need 46 points for this one to get there, and I think I’m going to get at least a touchdown more than that when push comes to shove.

The Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers are going to do battle at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI. There is going to be a whole heck of a lot of overreaction to the fact that there were 71 points scored just last week at the Metrodome when these two teams met up, and I’m absolutely going to pounce while the getting is good on a number that is inflated. These two teams do both have some great offensive characteristics, but I know that they both have some massive flaws as well. What I noticed on Sunday was that the Packers are almost better served offensively playing from behind than they are from ahead, as that is when they really put up their big time numbers in the frantic passing game. Perhaps they would be better served running the hurry up spread offense for the full 60 minutes to see what would happen.

Wild Card Playoff Picks

For starters, this game is being played outside on the grass of the Frozen Tundra, not inside in the cushy 72 degree dome with turf. It’s a little far out to be looking at the weather forecast, but temperatures probably will start below 20 degrees in this game, and when push comes to shove, it’s only going to get colder as the night wears on. This is going to make the passing game a heck of a lot more difficult to execute, especially if for QB Christian Ponder, who played his college ball at Florida State and has no idea what playing in Green Bay in January can be like.

There also just has to be a point that these two teams figure each other out. Rodgers isn’t going to throw for 325 yards like he has averaged thus far in this series this year, and RB Adrian Peterson probably isn’t going to rush for 205 yards like he has averaged against the Pack. If those two items turn out to be true, it is going to be awfully, awfully difficult to see this one getting past the number when push comes to shove. Expect a game in the 30s, not in the 40s.

This is the third time that the Packers and the Vikings are going to be playing against each other over the course of the last six weeks, and it is going to be a heck of a battle in the first round of the playoffs. RB Adrian Peterson and QB Aaron Rodgers are really the two stars of the show, and both of these men put up some tremendous performances just last week. Rodgers threw for over 360 yards, while Peterson came up nine yards short of the all-time single season rushing record. That being said, he still had 199 yards and ultimately single-handedly won the game for his team.

That being said, both of these teams have a glaring weakness offensively. The Packers have no rushing game whatsoever. RB Alex Green is hurting, and if he is ultimately out of the lineup, Rodgers is going to be the leading rusher for the team that takes the field on Saturday. That wouldn’t be so bad if he had the legs of QB Robert Griffin III or QB Cam Newton, but this is a man that doesn’t even have 300 rushing yards. Minnesota can’t throw the ball, though. QB Christian Ponder only threw 18 TDs on the year, though three of those scores came last week at the Metrodome.

In the end, this is going to be a tight game. There are just too many problems that the Packers have in this one to cover such a big number. Their kicking game isn’t very good, they can’t run the football when the game is on the line, and they don’t have a defense that has proven to be able to stop the run. That being said, with all of the chips in the center of the table, Rodgers knows how to get the job done. We’ve never seen Ponder in a situation like this one, and we just don’t think that he has the goods to win this game outright. We’re still taking the points though, knowing that both of these meetings this year have been awfully close.

BovadaThe Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings are set to kick off their Week 17 NFL betting clash on Sunday 12/30, and I’m set to make my football pick for the affair at Mall of America Field at the HHH Metrodome. Kickoff is set for 4:25 ET, and I’ve got the perfect NFL pick for this outstanding duel on the gridiron.

Green Bay Packers (11-4, 9-6 ATS) -3
Minnesota Vikings (9-6, 7-7-1 ATS) +3
Over/Under 45.5

I’m a bit puzzled as to why this ‘total’ has gotten so much publicity. This isn’t going to be the highest scoring game in the world, yet the number that is posted is in the mid-40s as if a team like the New Orleans Saints were playing in this one.

There’s no doubt whatsoever that the Vikings are going to be running the ball and running it a ton with RB Adrian Peterson. Peterson had a few big time runs when these two teams met the first time a few weeks ago, but in the end, the team only put up 14 points in spite of the fact that he had over 200 total rushing yards on the day. Remember too, that the Vikes only scored 23 last week against the Houston Texans, and it’s likely going to take at least that many to get this one to the ‘total’ in all likelihood.

And one final thought about this ‘under’… The Packers have allowed 18.2 points per game over the course of their last nine games, and they have played five of their last six beneath the ‘total’. There’s just no reason to think that this one is going to get to the mid-40s, and in the end, I expect that this is going to be a low scoring game that has the feel of a postseason clash with a ton on the line.

As we see it, the Vikings are already going to know that they have to win this game to get into the playoffs, as we think that the Bears are going to beat the Lions in the 1:00 ET hour. Green Bay already basically knows that it has to have this game to lock up a first round bye in the playoffs, something that is incredibly coveted for all of the teams involved in this chase in both conferences. The Vikes came up with the game of their lives last week in Houston, but this is going to be a significantly tougher game. The Packers won 23-14 when these two teams met the first time around at Lambeau Field, and that was in spite of the fact that K Mason Crosby missed a field goal and that RB Adrian Peterson had 210 yards on the ground, 82 of which came on one carry. It just isn’t going to be the prettiest game in the world for Minnesota, and in the end, we think that Green Bay, which is quietly 9-1 in its last 10 games, will take this one and get next week off.

We love these big time dogs this week, and virtually without exception, we’re going to be backing them. The Titans are coming off of a win last week against the Jets, and we have to remember that they have only been beaten by this many points twice in the last nine games. In there too, was a game that could have been covered at the death against the Houston Texans, as the backdoor was left wide open. Remember too, that Tennessee has won three straight and covered two of the last three in this series, though that does date back to 2001. The Packers have won and covered three straight games and have won exactly zero of those games by more than nine points. And the oddsmakers are expecting them to lay nearly two full touchdowns in this one? Doesn’t it seem a bit ridiculous to you? The Green Bay rushing attack just isn’t good enough to close out a game when it is ahead, even by three scores, and that will leave the door wide open once again for the Titans and their bettors to prance on through as victors.

Those of you that have followed my betting advice over the course of the last several weeks know that I love my underdogs, and I especially love when I can get great spots on teams that are just vastly underrated going against teams that are just vastly overrated. This one just makes no sense to me. The Pack should be favored, surely. But to favor them by more than 10 is ridiculous. They aren’t beating teams by double digits now, so there is no reason to think that that is going to change here.

Tennessee’s offense has been bad, but its defense hasn’t allowed more than 27 points in a game since November 4th. Head Coach Mike Munchak has his boys playing tight to the vest, and though the club is taking some shots up the field, all in all, the offense still revolves around the successes or the failures of RB Chris Johnson.

The Packers haven’t scored more than 27 points in a game since November 4th either. And the oddsmakers are assuming a 30-17 final, or something of the sorts. Give me a break. You can bet that I’m going to be throwing the Titans into a heck of a lot of teasers this weekend at +20, but for the purposes of this play, I’m going to take the Packers ‘under’ their team total, as the only way I see Tennessee getting beaten is if it beats itself on offense.

How crazy does this game look? Way back in Week 2, the Packers were seemingly the desperate 0-1 team that needed to win that game to keep the entire ship from sinking. They were playing against a Chicago team that looked really impressive in Week 1, and it really seemed like this was the moment where the Bears had a chance to put their foot on the throats of their division rivals, albeit it early in the season. Now what do we have? We have a Green Bay team that has looked great recently, playing against a Chicago team that looks like the sky is falling, and it is the Packers that have a chance to put their foot on the throat of the Bears. Sounds familiar, right? Just one problem. The Packers have always been the better of these two teams, and they have always been the better team by a comfortable margin. Bid adieu to the Bears, probably once and for all when this one is lost and some of the other 7-6 and 6-7 teams win on Sunday.

Making sports betting picks is one of my specialties, and today at Cappers Info, I’m making my Sunday Football Tipster pick based upon the football trends and NFL odds for the Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers game on Sunday, December 9th at Lambeau Field at 8:20 p.m. ET.

Detroit Lions (4-8, 5-7 ATS) +7
Green Bay Packers (8-4, 6-6 ATS) -7
Over/Under 48.5

The Packers and the Lions are two teams that have the potential to put on a show offensively, and we have seen it in games between these two before. For example, there were 86 points scored last year on New Year’s Day when these clubs met last year, but if you take that game out, there were games that featured 10 points, 42 points, and 44 points. This one isn’t going to be an exception to that low scoring rule, I would think.

I’m just not buying into the Lions right now at all offensively. They’re a one-man show with WR Calvin Johnson, but even if he goes off for 10 catches, 250 yards, and 3 scores, there’s still only 21 points on the board to show for all of that work. The Packers too, have been down offensively of late as well. They haven’t exceeded more than 24 points in three straight games, and I really don’t think they’re going to be able to do that again in this one.

Three out of four and five out of seven have failed to reach the ‘total’ in this series, and the snow and the wind isn’t going to help matters any. It’s going to be tough to move the ball up and down the field, and though there will be some big plays, there just won’t be enough consistent plays to put this many points on the board.

These two NFC North rivals are going to be squaring off on Football Night in America this week, and there is a clear divide between these two teams. The Packers might be the squarer of these two teams, but they’re going to win this one going away by more than a touchdown. QB Aaron Rodgers should have himself a great game playing against a team that he has normally terrorized, and he should make up for a bad effort when he threw for just 236 yards and two TDs when these two teams met a few weeks ago. Detroit has been a tough luck team over the course of the last few weeks, losing all three games, and it has a real chance to just fall on its face. QB Matthew Stafford and WR Calvin Johnson can only do so much, and they are going to be on the short side of the stick in this one.
