The Penguins haven’t had any problems scoring goals in this series, and they have now scored at least three goals in every single game which they have played in the playoffs. That’s quite the impressive mark over the course of the this many games. Ottawa is doing everything that it can, and it just isn’t good enough to stick with the Pens in this series. The Senators’ G Craig Anderson was run out of Game 2, and though he is going to be back in the pipes in Game 3, he has to face less pressure than he has in the first two games of this series. Unfortunately, we just don’t see how that’s going to happen. Now that C Sidney Crosby is back doing his thing, and he is coming off of a game in which he scored a hat trick, this Pittsburgh team might be unbeatable, especially by a team like Ottawa that just doesn’t have the goods to keep up. Unless D Erik Karlsson or RW Daniel Alfredsson can come up with a superhuman effort, the Sens are going to fall down 0-3 in this series.

The Penguins have already won three quarters of their home games this year, and that includes taking two of the three games that they played at home against the New York Islanders. We came into this series thinking that the Sens would find a way to take one out of two of these first games, but we are starting to become pessimistic about that thought and are going to shift the other way. The Penguins didn’t just win Game 1; they dominated it. They didn’t win the shots on goal battle, but they did win the battle of the quality chances, and they parlayed that into four goals which would never be responded to. G Tomas Vokoun is playing like a man with his hair on fire ever since taking over for the benched G Marc-Andre Fleury. Perhaps most important for Pittsburgh is the fact that its power play is on fire. The team has scored a whopping 13 power play goals in its last 10 games, including going 2-of-4 on the man advantage on Tuesday night’s Game 1. The Senators meanwhile, went 0-for-5 on their five shots with the man advantage. Pittsburgh has scored at least four goals in five straight games and at least three goals in eight straight games, and we have to think that it is going to win this game at least two out of three times to make us turn a profit.

The Penguins and the Senators seem to be separated by worlds. Pittsburgh was definitively the most talented team from a skating standpoint in the opening round of the playoffs, as it scored a whopping 25 goals in six games against the New York Islanders, including at least four in the final four games. The offense was simply unstoppable, but then again, the Isles aren’t known for their outstanding defense, and it has been years since G Evgeni Nabokov was really a force in the pipes. This time around though, the Penguins are going to be getting a challenge from a great defense and a rock solid goalie in G Craig Anderson, who had a great start to his postseason. Ottawa was able to excuse the Montreal Canadiens in just five games, though we all know that this series is going to be one in which the Penguins don’t give up the way that the Habs did. That being said, the oddsmakers just don’t have this one right. Sure, Pittsburgh is the better team in this series, and it deserves the nod with home ice advantage for about 30 cents as well. However, when push comes to shove, there is no way that G Tomas Vokoun should be a -200 favorite in the playoffs against a guy who legitimately perhaps should have been the Vezina Trophy winner this year. We like Ottawa at this price in this series and will continue to back the Sens until the numbers start to settle into the -160 area where they probably belong.
