Thunder Lead Series 3-2

Oh, Oklahoma City… You all are in a heck of a lot of trouble right now. The Thunder just don’t have any answers for what the Rockets are bringing to the table right now, and we think that it is insulting to think that they are going to be just one-point underdogs in this game. The argument could be made that the Rockets should have already won this series in five games, as they had every opportunity in the world to win Game 2 and Game 3. G James Harden is playing too well right now, and his teammates are doing a better job than F Kevin Durant’s teammates. Durant just can’t play point guard, and that’s what Head Coach Scott Brooks should be realizing. Unfortunately, Brooks just doesn’t have another guard on the roster that has a chance to keep the ball moving against the Rockets. The end result of this game is going to be ugly as we see it, as we think that Houston is going to jump out to the lead and never look back in this one to pour all of the pressure in the world on the Thunder, as there is a real chance for the Rockets to come all the way back and win this series.

NBA Betting Odds: Oklahoma City -8.5
Rockets vs. Thunder NBA TV Schedule: TNT

Thunder Lead Series 3-1

If there was any thought that perhaps the Rockets could get back into the Western Conference Quarterfinals after falling behind Oklahoma City 3-0, they certainly answered the bell. Houston came up with a gritty 105-103 win in Game 4 of this series, and it proved that it has the goods to get the job done without its star really being at his best. G James Harden turned the ball over 10 times, and he only made four shots from the field for the game, yet the team was able to rally around him in spite of his deficiencies to win the game. Remember that G Jeremy Lin didn’t play in Game 4 either. The Rockets overcame adversity for sure. Oklahoma City really hasn’t yet. The Thunder haven’t really looked the parts of the favorites in the Western Conference yet in this series, as they really only have one dominating game under their belts, and they clearly are going to be in some trouble going forward without G Russell Westbrook. They simply haven’t figured out how to play without him, as the ball is largely just getting in the hands of F Kevin Durant, who doesn’t give up the basketball. Durant is a superior talent, and he might be able to win this game by himself, but he isn’t going to cover this game by himself, that’s for sure. We want the points on our side in a game that might be a heck of a lot closer than the Thunder would like to see it be.

Rockets @ Thunder Game 5 Pick: Houston Rockets +8.5
Rockets @ Thunder Score Prediction: Thunder 100 – Rockets 97

Thunder Lead Series 3-0

The Rockets are in a sad state right now, and we have a hard time thinking that they are going to be able to get off of the mat. They were beaten in Game 3 of this best of seven series, and they were beaten in horrendous fashion. Houston erased what was once a 26-point deficit with a huge second half rally, and it was able to take the lead late against Oklahoma City. A few missed free throws and a F Kevin Durant three pointer that bounced high off the rim and eventually fell proved to be the backbreaker though, as the team ended up dropping by exactly three points, the value of that miracle of a shot. G Jeremy Lin is clearly hurt to the point that he didn’t play during the entire fourth quarter with his chest injury. G James Harden took a few big time tumbles in the second half of the game as well, and he didn’t even take the final shot of the game when the team needed a three to force overtime. Meanwhile, Durant literally looks like he can take over the game on the offensive end of the court whenever he wants to. He threw down dunk after dunk with some massive drives to the lane, and every time Oklahoma City needed a basket, he found a way to get it. The Thunder aren’t going to be as bad as they were in the second half of Game 3 at any point, and as long as that stays the case, this should turn out to be a great situation for the visitors. Oklahoma City puts a stamp on this series and ends any hopes of a Houston comeback on Monday night to end the opening round.

Thunder Lead Series 2-0

Are the Thunder really going to be in some trouble now that they don’t have G Russell Westbrook? There’s a good argument that could be made for that to be the case. However, we just don’t think that there’s that much going on that is going to be different between the Thunder and the Rockets. Houston came close in Game 2 to pulling off the upset, but we just don’t think that this is going to be a series that comes back to the Sooner State. We’re not going to say that Oklahoma City is actually better without Westbrook in the lineup, but there is a good chance that it is going to be alright. This is a chance for G Kevin Martin to potentially step back into the starting lineup and shine, and this is where having G Derek Fisher is really going to turn out to pay dividends when push comes to shove. He isn’t going to be playing 35+ minutes, nor will he be scoring 25+ points as we have come to expect out of Westbrook, but that’s not what is going to be needed. Fisher just needs to be a calming influence on the team, and he needs to keep the pace of this game down just a bit. If that turns out to be the case, we think that the experience of the Thunder will do the rest of the damage, as they go into the Lone Star State and effectively end this series on Saturday night.

Thunder Lead Series 1-0

It took the Thunder three quarters of basketball to finally solve the riddle of the Rockets, but in the end, they were able to get the job done and pull away for a 29-point victory with a very impressive second half in Game 1. Interestingly enough, it was F Kevin Durant or G Russell Westbrook that really put up the big time numbers, rather F Serge Ibaka (17 points) and G Kevin Martin (16) that really stepped up. It also helped that G Thabo Sefolosha, G Reggie Jackson, F Nick Collison, and G Derek Fisher all scored either eight or nine points as well. What’s scary for Houston is that that wasn’t nearly the best game that we’ll see the Thunder play in this series almost certainly. However, we do think that this game is going to fly past the number due to the fact that the Rockets should get some more offense in this game. They only shot 36.3 percent from the floor and 22.2 percent from downtown in the game, and that obviously isn’t going to cut it here in the playoffs. These two teams can both light it up, as we saw in the second quarter when there were 62 points put up between these two. Expect to see a lot more like that in this one, as there will be at least 220 on the board by the time this one is finished.

Series Tied 0-0

Here’s all you need to know about this entire series. The Thunder went 50-8 SU and 43-15 ATS this season in games in which they scored 100+ points. Do you really think that Houston is going to hold OKC under 100 points in any game in this series? If the Rockets do it once, we would be tremendously impressed, but we just don’t see how it is going to happen when push comes to shove. F Kevin Durant and G Russell Westbrook are a bit of a rested team, while the Rockets had to fight right down to the bloody end of the season, failing in their mission to get the No. 6 seed, and instead falling all the way down to the No. 8 when push came to shove. This is an angry Oklahoma City outfit that has a heck of a lot to prove down the stretch of these playoffs, as the Thunder really want to not just get back to the NBA Finals, but to ultimately win them as well to give Durant and Westbrook their first rings. This is certainly the more experienced team, and it is a team that is going to prove that it has the ability to wipe the floor with these Rockets very early on. Game 1 is going to be a romp for sure.

Rockets @ Thunder Game 1 Pick: Oklahoma City Thunder -10
Rockets @ Thunder Game 1 Score Prediction: Thunder 118 – Houston 100

The betting lines in this game are going to surely change as the night goes on, and if the Utah Jazz end up losing to the Memphis Grizzlies earlier in the night, don’t be all that shocked if the Lakers end up just benching virtually all of their players to get ready for a first round series with the Oklahoma City Thunder starting this weekend. Of course, there really is a big reward for winning this game for LA whether a playoff spot is already ensured or not. The idea of moving up to the No. 7 seed instead of playing as a No. 8 seed has to be a bit appealing, knowing that the San Antonio Spurs aren’t playing their best basketball of the season. That being said, the Rockets are going to want to fight as well to take down the Lakers and make sure that they stay in no worse than that seventh slot (sixth if the Golden State Warriors lose to the Portland Trail Blazers). However, we are going to go under the assumption that LA plays to win this game regardless of what’s going on in Memphis earlier in the night. Either this is going to turn out to be a playoff party, and the team will fight to get up to No. 7, or it is going to be a game that is win and in, lose and go home. Remember that Houston just lost on the road to a lifeless Phoenix Suns outfit two nights ago, and this one probably isn’t going to be all that much prettier when push comes to shove.

Rockets @ Lakers Pick: Los Angeles Lakers -3
Rockets @ Lakers Prediction: Los Angeles 109 – Houston 99

NBA betting action continues on Tuesday night from Toyota Center, where the Houston Rockets will host the Phoenix Suns in a battle on the NBA betting odds. Don’t miss out on this one, which should be a great clash. The NBA television schedule shows this 8:00 ET tip happening on NBA TV.

We’re really searching for the justification for making the Rockets two-touchdown favorites in this game on Tuesday night. Understandably, the Rockets have been playing good basketball, as they only just had their four-game winning streak snapped against the Denver Nuggets on Sunday at the Pepsi Center, something that there is no shame in whatsoever. Understandable as well, is the fact that Houston is playing for the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference, something that would be crucial to obtain if there is virtually any hope for survival in the first round of the playoffs. And, it’s also true that the Suns have lost nine straight games and look like they’ve packed it in for the season. But 14 points? Phoenix has only lost four times in this stretch by at least 14 points, and even then, we aren’t all that sure that Houston is going to be able to do that it the Suns. Phoenix was blown to bits the last time these two played at this venue last month, losing by a whopping 30 points. However, if you go back beyond that, the Suns have three straight wins and covers, and they have covered each of those spreads by at least 7.5 points. Something is telling us that this is going to look like a comfortable cover for Phoenix once again on Tuesday.

Suns @ Rockets Pick: Phoenix Suns +14
Suns @ Rockets Prediction: Houston 109 – Phoenix 101

NBA betting action continues on Friday night from Rose Garden, where the Portland Trail Blazers will host the Houston Rockets in a battle on the NBA betting odds. Don’t miss out on this one, which should be a great clash. The NBA television schedule shows this 10:30 ET tip happening on ESPN.

NBA Betting Odds: Rockets -2.5

The Trail Blazers really look like they have packed it in for the season. The team has dropped six games in a row, all of which have come by double digits. Only one of the last six games was covered, and that came by a hook against the Utah Jazz. The rest of those games? Not only have the Blazers failed to cover, but they have failed to cover by 10.5, 17.5, 11.5, 21.5, and nine points. F LaMarcus Aldridge has been sitting out the last few games, but he’ll be back in the fold tonight, which should help matters for a team that has truly looked awful. He and G Damian Lillard are all that Portland is bringing to the table with F Nicolas Batum likely out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. Meanwhile, Houston is playing well and it has a heck of a lot on the line. A playoff spot still isn’t quite a guarantee, though it is looking good. The Rockets won’t want to take any chances, and they will want to do what they can to run down the Golden State Warriors for the No. 6 seed in the conference. From a pure matchup perspective, we really don’t see how the Rockets won’t score at least 100 points in this one, and over the course of these last six, Portland has scored just an average of 91.2 points per game. The hosts will do a little better than that in this one, but not good enough to get a ‘W’.

Rockets @ Trail Blazers Pick: Houston Rockets -2.5
Rockets @ Trail Blazers Prediction: Houston 102 – Portland 96

This is just a total mismatch on paper, and it is going to make for a game that could be a one-sided blowout. We love that the Timberwolves keep playing as hard as they can in spite of the fact that they have a ton of missing players from the fold, not the least of which are three big men that would probably be averaging a combined 40 points and 25 boards per game if they were in the lineup. Playing against some teams works, but going against a healthy Houston team on the road when it is clicking on all cylinders offensively is just going to be far too much to ask for. The Rockets are amongst the best teams in basketball offensively, averaging nearly 107 points per game on the campaign. They are getting great contributions from G James Harden and F Chandler Parsons, amongst others. About the only thing that we fear is the idea of G Ricky Rubio taking over a third straight game. Rubio came up just shy of a second straight triple-double against the Indiana Pacers. He might be able to do that again versus Houston, but even if he does, it’s still difficult to justify taking less than two touchdowns in Houston.

Timberwolves @ Rockets Pick: Houston Rockets
Timberwolves @ Rockets Prediction: Houston 112 – Minnesota 98

Trusting the Golden State offense right now is going to be awfully tough, knowing that this team has been stuck in the 80s in two of its last three games. A long home stand has started with a pair of wins over the Toronto Raptors and the Sacramento Kings, and that has to be a good sign going forward for the rest of the games played here at Oracle. Here’s our problem with this one, though. Houston is going to run and is going to force the Warriors to get some points on the board. Golden State did prove against Toronto that it still has its scoring prowess, putting up 125 points in that one. However, we are wondering if it is going to be able to keep up in this game. The Rockets are going to get their points in this one, and we think that is going to make a big enough difference to at least keep this one close. We wouldn’t want to be laying too many points with the Warriors on Friday night, and that’s what the oddsmakers are expecting them to do.

Rockets @ Warriors Pick: Houston Rockets +2.5
Rockets @ Warriors Prediction: Golden State 104 – Houston 102

The Rockets are going to try to run up and down the court with the Clippers, but if they do so this time the same way that they did the first time around, matters won’t be so good. Houston was blasted by eight at home against the Clips, and it really had no answers defensively for anything that the visitors were trying to accomplish offensively. This is the first game back at home for LA, and it has to be happy to be back at the Staples Center for this one, even if there is a significantly bigger game on tap on Thursday night against the Lakers. G James Harden is out of the fold in this one for the Rockets, and that’s a huge blow, knowing that he is the team’s leading scorer and one of its leaders. Can F Chandler Parsons and the likes step it up and compete with one of the best teams in the Western Conference? We really don’t believe so. This should be a romp from the start.

Rockets @ Clippers Pick: Los Angeles Clippers
