After watching Game 5 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals between the Grizzlies and the Clippers, we were all set to back up the truck on the Grizz in Game 6… And then came this -6.5 price. Memphis is a great team, but it isn’t in a position where it should be laying a full touchdown in a playoff game under any reasonable circumstance. F Blake Griffin has an ankle sprain that might keep him out of the lineup, but we have to think if he can walk, he’s going to get back out there and play with desperation now officially in place for the Clip Joint. G Chris Paul has been magnificent in this series, and though he has been dealing with a bad thumb as well, he has clearly been the best player on the court. The bigs of F Zach Randolph and C Marc Gasol have been destroying LA in the paint, either directly through scoring or indirectly through creating open shots for others. Still, we have to take our chances in this game with the points. There’s a good chance that the winner of this game will only be in the 80s, and it isn’t going to take all that much from the Clips – perhaps 85 points or so – to be able to ensure the cover when push comes to shove.

We really don’t like what we saw out of the Clippers in Games 3 and 4 of this series, and we think that they could be in a heck of a lot of trouble when they head back home for Game 5 against the Grizz as well. Getting off shots in and of itself was difficult, but getting off quality shots was all the more virtually impossible against this Memphis defense. The argument could be made that the Grizzlies had home court advantage and desperation on their side in Games 3 and 4, but we think this is a trend that is going to continue in this series. We don’t like the way that most of the Clips are playing at the moment, and if you take away the play of G Chris Paul, you really don’t have a consistent performer in this series. Meanwhile, Memphis is taking advantage of the situation, turning defense into offense and getting enough points on the board to get the job done. The squad was particularly efficient in Game 4 when it shot 39-of-77 from the field in what amounted to definitively be the best offensive showing of the season by either team since Game 1 for the Clippers. Don’t be shocked if Memphis is able to come to town and steal Game 5 of this series as well to push LA’s back against the wall once and for all as these teams head back to the FedEx Forum later this week.

Time and time again, we see teams that lost Game 1 of a series come back and fire off a great game in Game 2 to level the proceedings. That’s precisely what we think could happen in this game as well. The Clippers know that they will have the Grizzlies on the ropes if they could just shoot the ball with the same sort of efficiency that they did in Game 1. The problem is that the team shot 11-of-16 in the fourth quarter alone and ended up shooting 55.4% for the entire game to blow the Grizz out of the water. Does anyone think that a team that routinely held teams in the 40-45% range in shooting this year is going to get torched that badly again? We really tend to think not. Memphis is a resilient team, and it is a club that has the ability to score enough points to get the job done. Though we know that F Blake Griffin won’t only score 10 points against the Clippers, we also know that they shouldn’t get seven players in double digits in scoring either. Memphis should get a significantly better contribution from its starters, and it should find a way to get the job done in this game to send this series back to the FedEx Forum all level at a game apiece.

The first thing that we are going to recognize in this series is that points are going to be at a premium in this series. If a team gets to 90 in most of the games in this series, it is going to win. The Clippers figured out how to get the best of the Grizz in three of the four meetings this year, and when they were a relatively full team from a health standpoint, they were definitively the better of these two teams. There is clearly going to be a sense of these games being wars more than basketball games, as this will be a dirty series with a lot of pushing, shoving, and hard fouling. Fortunately for both of these teams, they are totally healthy at this point. That means that G Chauncey Billups is back and available off of the bench for Head Coach Vinny Del Negro and the Clippers. With that being said, that is going to make this team all the more dangerous. LA is sort of flying under the radar at the moment, and it is going show the rest of the world very early in this series that it could be the third most dangerous team in the West, not the Denver Nuggets. We’re laying the points on the NBA playoffs odds in Game 1, and we think that you should do so as well.
