The Spurs have really had the number of the Lakers here in the playoffs, but it really isn’t all that much of a surprise considering the lineup that Head Coach Mike D’Antoni is basically forced to throw out there at this point. We already know that G Kobe Bryant, G Steve Blake, and F Metta World Peace are out of the fold, but so too should be G Steve Nash and G Jodie Meeks. The end result has been three very lopsided games, as LA hasn’t gotten any closer than 11 in any of these games here in the first round of the playoffs. That being said, we do like some of the spunk that this team showed in Game 3, believe it or not. The game was truthfully over at the end of the first quarter when the Spurs were up by a dozen points, but we think that G Andrew Goudelock and G Darius Morris handled themselves well. F Earl Clark and perhaps C Robert Sacre are going to be asked to play some additional minutes in this game, and these youngsters aren’t going to want to just give up. Look for the young players wearing purple and gold and proving to be imposters in place of the regular Lakers to look at least a little bit more like the Lakers that we are used to seeing. The Spurs are going to be taking it easy in this one, and we think that they are going to really treat this more like an exhibition than anything else. The big boys will play their 20-25 minutes, but we don’t expect to see a whole heck of a lot more than that. An LA moneyline play might not be out of the question, but we definitely want the points on our side.

If you want an indication of how this game is going to go, we suggest looking back at that game that the Lakers and the Spurs played a week ago at Staples Center. G Tony Parker shot 1-of-10 from the field. G Manu Ginobili didn’t play. San Antonio went -12 on the glass. And yet when push came to shove, this was still very much a game down the stretch and could have easily gone the other way. Now, these two teams are coming back to the Lone Star State, where the Spurs have played tremendous ball for the most part this season, and they are going to be at full strength. Parker will score more than four points in this game. Ginobili, even if he isn’t healthy enough to play 30+ minutes, will still contribute more than G Cory Joseph and G Nando de Colo did against the Lakers. The Spurs will shoot better than 37.1 percent from the field. And, to top it all off, they’re going to put C Dwight Howard on the line no less than 20 times in this game. If all of that turns out to be the case, there is just no way that LA is going to win unless all of a sudden, the big man can step up and knock down some foul shots. The frustration is going to boil over on the defensive end of the court for the Lakers, and when the dust settles, this is going to be a game that is nowhere near close going into the fourth quarter.

For weeks, if not for months, the Lakers have been riding the back of G Kobe Bryant all the way to the finish line. This was a team that was eight-games below .500 going into the second half of the season, and since that point, in spite of the fact that F Pau Gasol missed time, in spite of the fact that G Steve Nash is still out of the lineup, in spite of the fact that F Metta World Peace tore his meniscus, and in spite of the fact that C Dwight Howard has still been inconsistent in his ways, the club has gone 26-12 to get within just two wins or Utah Jazz losses of being in the playoffs. The one constant that the Lakers have had all season long is the play of G Kobe Bryant. No matter what he had to do to push the team to victory, Kobe was able to get the job done. He was doing literally everything on the court prior to his season ending injury suffered on Friday night against the Golden State Warriors, and it almost seemed as if he were willing his team to the finish line. Now though, there’s no Kobe. There’s no Nash. This backcourt is suddenly in total shambles. The Spurs have to be sensing weakness, and when they do, they pounce. Head Coach Gregg Popovich has to want rid of this LA team, knowing that there is a good chance that San Antonio could be facing this outfit in the first round of the playoffs. Don’t be shocked if this is one of these games where the Spurs flex their muscles and ultimately get the job done before the end of the third quarter.

The Lakers are still making the push towards the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, and there is a great opportunity tonight to make up a game on the Utah Jazz, who have to take on the Oklahoma City Thunder. Winning out might ultimately be the only real option here for the Lakers, who need to essentially close two games on Utah in a span of just seven games. Perhaps they could afford a slip or two, but to do so to a team like New Orleans would be devastating. Los Angeles really isn’t playing bad basketball at the moment. It was able to beat the Memphis Grizzlies at home last Tuesday, and that game came on the heels of covers against both the Dallas Mavericks and the Sacramento Kings. Generally speaking, since the middle of March, the Lakers have played pretty well in situations where they really should be winning, and in spite of the fact that the Hornets have a tendency of being a bit stingy, we do think that this is a game that the boys from Tinseltown are going to ultimately win by double digits. Anything less than finishing the season sweep and moving to 3-1 ATS in this series this year would be a huge disappointment.

C Dwight Howard has been playing better basketball, but he is about to run into a red hot center in C Joakim Noah. Noah has been putting together double-double after double-double of late, and he is playing well on both ends of the court. Here’s the problem that the Bulls have, though. There really shouldn’t be a player that should be able to lock down G Kobe Bryant. When these two teams met earlier this year at the United Center, Bryant shot just 7-of-22 from the floor and 0-of-6 from long range. If you think he’s going to do that again, you’re crazy. The Bulls also got 22 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds from G Kirk Hinrich. The Bulls also shot 52.9 percent from long range. As you can tell, we’re not overly optimistic about Chicago’s chances in this game. The Lakers are playing well and have some confidence right now, and they are going to be the ones that come out on top in this one by a comfortable margin. Kobe and company get their revenge on the boys from the Windy City.

This is a very potential playoff matchup at some point, and LA is going to want to prove that it has the goods to stick around with what is perceived to be one of the best teams in the league. We know that there are going to be plenty of points scored in this game, just as there were the first (222) and second (217) times that these two got it on this season. Oklahoma City’s offense is playing out of this world at the moment, scoring at least 103 in six straight games and at least 119 in three of those six. The Lakers had put up at least 103 as well in five in a row before edging out the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday. We think that the offensive-minded Lakers are going to try their best to run with the Thunder in a game where there should be at least 180 shots and at least 220 points as a result.

G Kobe Bryant has lit up the Timberwolves in his career, and he and his Lakers have 20 consecutive wins to show for it in this series. For as much as we would love to fade the men from Tinseltown, we just can’t do it on Thursday night. The Lakers are playing solid basketball, and they have won six straight against teams that likely aren’t going to get into the playoffs. LA is just 7-13 ATS in its last 20 games, but in that mix are several games which came quite close to the cover line. Minnesota is likely to go into this one without F Andrei Kirilenko, and it has to be a bit concerning that C Nikola Pekovic has what has been classified as an undisclosed injury that has left him listed as questionable for this one. We already know that Minnesota has been undermanned for most of the season, and its streak of going just 2-6 ATS in the last six games in this series surely isn’t going to help matters any. The Lakers are playing like a team on a mission right now, and we think that they are going to get a double digit victory on Thursday night and blow away the Timberwolves.

The Lakers are starting to catch some fire, and the rest of the Western Conference should be taking notice. The wins out of the blocks in the second half of the season against the Boston Celtics and the Portland Trail Blazers both came at home though, and there have been no issues winning games at Staples Center this year. The question comes as to whether this is a team that can play on the road or not, something that is going to be paramount as we head down the stretch of the season. Until proven otherwise, we assume that the answer to that question is no. Dallas hasn’t exactly been slacking either, and when you really look at it, it isn’t totally out of the playoff push either. Granted, wins against the Kings, Magic, and Hornets isn’t all that great, but in the end, wins are wins. The Mavericks have three straight covers and are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games, and we see no reason why they aren’t going to take advantage of the fact that Los Angeles is the team with all of the hype in the NBA right now. This one will be a big game for Big D.

This one definitely puzzles us a bit. Everything really does point to this being an emotional game for the Lakers. They have had a week off to get back in the saddle following the disastrous first half of the season, and they are going to be honoring their recently deceased owner, Dr. Jerry Buss in this one as well. There is also a major score to settle for a 116-95 beating that the Celtics put on LA just two weeks ago in Beantown. But when you strip all of that away, what we’re seeing is a game that really should be a coin flip. Boston was -1.5 at home against the Lakers two weeks ago, and that should put this game at +4.5 or at worst +6 or so for the C’s. As long as the Celtics don’t do anything drastic over the course of the next 12 hours in terms of trades, there is no reason that they shouldn’t be playing like the exact same team that went into the All-Star Break with an 8-2 SU and ATS record in the last 10 games that it played. The Lakers have failed to cover three in a row, and they are one of the worst ATS teams in the league right now to back. They failed to cover the Clippers by a whopping 20 points on the final day of the first half of the season, and we wouldn’t be surprised if they get beaten in this one, too.
