Of the 16 teams that are left standing in the field, there are only three that won their conference tournaments. One of the three are in action on Friday night in St. Louis, where we make our Sweet 16 picks in the clash between the Ohio Bobcats and the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Sweet 16 Matchup: #4 Ohio Bobcats vs. #1 North Carolina Tar Heels
Date: Friday, March 23rd, 7:45 ET
Location: Scottrade Arena, St. Louis, MO
Sweet 16 Odds: North Carolina -10.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TBS

The Bobcats are one of the three double digit seeds that are left in the NCAA Tournament, and they are going to try to do the best they can to take down one of the top teams in the country. Yes, Ohio has taken out a pair of teams that were from the power conferences, but neither one was truly one of the best in their respective conference, especially beating the South Florida Bulls in their third game of the week.

If Ohio is going to pull off the upset, it needs to play like it did at home this year, where it went a whopping 16-1. The team is going to need big time performances out of its guards, Walter Offutt and DJ Cooper. Offutt is coming off of a game against USF in which he scored 21 points on a rock solid 7-of-9 shooting. Cooper put up 19 points, seven helpers, and six boards in the same game, and he now has five straight games with at least 18 points scored. He averages 14.9 points, 5.7 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game, so it is clear that even at 5’11″, Cooper can fill up the stat sheet.

Of course, the big question that we have been asking of the Tar Heels all week long is what their backcourt is going to look like. We know that Tyler Zeller and Harrison Barnes are both tremendous athletes, and now that John Henson is back in the fold, it is clearly one of the best two or three frontcourts in the entire country. However, Dexter Strickland was already lost for the season before coming anywhere near the postseason, and now, Kendall Marshall has a broken wrist that just got out of a cast on Wednesday. Reggie Bullock is probably going to have to step up and do some more of the ball handling duties regardless of whether Marshall plays or not, but if he doesn’t, it is going to be a long game for the UNC guards against a very stingy set of Bobcats guards.

In the end though, the power of the Tar Heels is far going to outweigh the play of Offutt and Cooper. Barnes can handle the ball if need be as well, and as long as the pace of this one keeps up, the Bobcats are going to have no answers for all of the size and athleticism that Carolina has to bring to the table in the paint. The big time rebounding edge is going to go to the Tar Heels, and that is probably going to make all the difference. It has been a nice run for Ohio, but it is a run that is coming to a close on Friday night here in the Sweet 16.

Sweet 16 Free Pick: North Carolina Tar Heels -10.5

Wisconsin vs. Syracuse Projected Final Score: North Carolina 82 – Ohio 68

The Xavier Musketeers and the Baylor Bears analysis starts right here at Cappers Info, and we are taking a look at these two teams and which side has the edge when push comes to shove. Don’t miss out on our Sweet 16 picks for this clash!

Sweet 16 Matchup: #10 Xavier Musketeers vs. #3 Baylor Bears
Date: Friday, March 23rd, 7:15 ET
Location: Phillips Arena, Atlanta, GA
Sweet 16 Odds: Baylor -6
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

Just a few weeks ago, Baylor looked like a team that was going to crash out of the NCAA Tournament to a team that it had no business losing to, while Xavier seemed like it was destined to finish on the wrong side of the bubble. It’s amazing what a run to your conference final parlayed with a little bit of luck can do for a team. Now, the X-Men got all the way up to the No. 10 line in the dance and made it here by beating an overrated bunch of Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the No. 15 seed in the bracket, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. Baylor has had nothing but double digit seeds at this point en route to the Sweet 16, and there is definitely something to be said about the Bears using their momentum from the Big XII Tournament and carrying it into the dance against teams that they should be crushing.

Even odder for the Musketeers is that Mark Lyons really hasn’t done anything in this tournament. He is averaging 15.0 points per game this year, but he only has 15 points in total in the two games. That being said, Tu Holloway has picked up the slack, and when he has needed help, it has been Kenny Frease that has come to the forefront. Frease is coming off of a huge game against Lehigh in which he put up 25 points and 12 boards, raising his season averages up to 9.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

Revolution Sports

All of Baylor’s starters are double digit point scorers on a regular basis, and that makes this team an incredibly dangerous one. It is so hard to cover all five men on every possession, especially knowing that any of them can take the final shot from just about anywhere on the court. We haven’t heard much from Perry Jones III yet in this tournament, but this could be the game in which he truly roars and declares his presence. Keep an eye as well on Quincy Miller, who is coming off of just an eight point performance against the Colorado Buffaloes.

The Musketeers have an injury concern in this one, knowing that Dezmine Wells has a toe injury. That being said, we think that we haven’t seen the best out of the X-Men yet in this tournament, and we just don’t trust the inconsistency of the Bears. Baylor might get through, but we really don’t think so. Xavier is a team that has picked up a lot of big wins in the tourney over the years, and this very well could be another one of those victories to get it to the Elite 8. We certainly want the points on our side.

Sweet 16 Free Pick: Xavier Musketeers +6

Xavier vs. Baylor Projected Final Score: Xavier 77 – Baylor 70

The upstarts of the NCAA Tournament, the Florida Gators, are going to be squaring off on the Sweet 16 odds on Thursday night in Phoenix, when they take on the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Sweet 16 Matchup: #7 Florida Gators vs. #3 Marquette Golden Eagles
Date: Thursday, March 22nd, 10:15 ET
Location: US Airways Center, Phoenix, AZ
Sweet 16 Odds: Marquette -1.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TBS

When push comes to shove, the onus of this game really doesn’t come down to much of anything that Marquette is going to do. If the Gators are hitting their shots from the outside, they are going to win this game and probably win it quite handily. If they aren’t though, it is going to be a long, uphill battle for them to be able to get the job done when push comes to shove.

UF is going to throw four guards on the court at the same time for virtually the entire game. Ironically, the team is shooting a whopping 76 percent from the floor on two-point shots, but still, it is a team that lives and dies by the three-pointer. The guards can run down rebounds, but as we saw with undersized teams like the Missouri Tigers already in this region, when there are big men that can out-jump the little guys, matters could get sticky if there are going to be a ton of rebounding opportunities. If there is good news for the Gators though, it is that they have a lot of NCAA Tournament experience, and if it comes down to coaching, Billy Donovan should be able to run circles around the fiery Buzz Williams.

Marquette’s ability to win this game might come down to Jae Crowder. There is no doubt that Crowder is a force to be reckoned with, and he is going to be the best rebounder on the court. He has a knack for getting the opposing big men in foul trouble, and if that turns out to be the case, Donovan is going to have to go onto his bench fairly early, which certainly won’t be making him a happy camper, knowing that all of his experience is in his first seven players in the rotation. Crowder has had five straight double-doubles, and he can really dominate in the paint. If he is able to draw plenty of attention, Darius Johnson-Odom, a man who has averaged 18.5 points per game here in the dance and for the season is going to have the ability to light things up as well.

We’re just really concerned with the way that the Gators play basketball, and we know that eventually, they are going to get bitten by it. The problem with Marquette though, is that its offense has tended to go in the tank in the big time games. If the Virginia Cavaliers had any offense whatsoever, UF would have been dismissed in the first round easily. Instead, the Gators are still here. The Golden Eagles just don’t have the tools to get the job done against this team, and we are going to bank on the fact that the sharpshooters for the Gators have more to bring to the table in this game than Crowder and the rest of his Golden Eagles do.

Sweet 16 Free Pick: Florida Gators +1.5

Wisconsin vs. Syracuse Projected Final Score: Florida 70 – Marquette 66

The Wisconsin Badgers and the Syracuse Orange analysis starts right here at Cappers Info, and we are taking a look at these two teams and which side has the edge when push comes to shove. Don’t miss out on our Sweet 16 picks for this clash!

Sweet 16 Matchup: #4 Wisconsin Badgers vs. #1 Syracuse Orange
Date: Thursday, March 22nd, 7:15 ET
Location: TD Garden, Boston, MA
Sweet 16 Odds: Syracuse -3.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

It is clear that the Badgers are going to provide the toughest challenge to the top seed in the East Region that they have seen this year. Syracuse is a team that many think is going to be down for the count now that it is running into a team that is mentally and physically tough, though we know that this is still a very talented side.

Wisconsin is traditionally a grinding team that is going to get the job done on the defensive end of the court. This is clearly the best defensive team left in this field, as the squad is allowing just 52.9 points per game. Part of that is because of the pace of the games, but we know that Head Coach Bo Ryan is insistent that all of his defenders are always swarming to try to create empty possessions and bad shots.

Revolution Sports

The problem on the other side of the court is that Wisconsin is going to shoot so many three point baskets. We don’t think of Syracuse as a dynamic defensive team, but we have to remember is that clubs only shot 38.3 percent from the floor this year against it. The Orange played great team defense in the dismissal of the Kansas State Wildcats in the second round, as the Cats shot just 31.3 percent from the floor. The Badgers have already tried to jack up 52 three pointers in this tourney, but even if their shots aren’t falling, they are going to have a shot to get on the offensive glass. KSU had 22 offensive rebounds over the weekend, and it is clear that a number like that again versus the Orange is going to see the top seed in the East knocked out.

In the end, the Badgers are one of the many teams from the Big Ten in this tournament that have proven that they are legit. Jordan Taylor, Jared Berggren, and the crew wouldn’t necessarily beat any team in the nation in this spot, but we think that without Fab Melo, this is a bad, bad spot for the Orange. They just aren’t going to be able to hit the boards hard enough to win this game, and the end result is going to be a lot of second chance buckets. Once the Badgers get in front, they aren’t going to let the Orange get back in it.

Sweet 16 Free Pick: Wisconsin Badgers +3.5

Wisconsin vs. Syracuse Projected Final Score: Wisconsin 66 – Syracuse 63

Of the 16 teams that are left standing in the field, there are only three that won their conference tournaments. Two of the three are in action on Thursday night in Phoenix, where we make our Sweet 16 picks in the clash between the Louisville Cardinals and the Michigan State Spartans.

Sweet 16 Matchup: #4 Louisville Cardinals vs. #1 Michigan State Spartans
Date: Thursday, March 22nd, 7:45 ET
Location: US Airways Center, Phoenix, AZ
Sweet 16 Odds: Michigan State -5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TBS

There is really only one major difference between these two teams. For Louisville, the only path to winning this game is likely going to be through its defense. This is a team that plays outstanding ball on this side of the court, and the amount of blocked shots that Gorgui Dieng and the crew get are out of this world. That’s why this is the team ranked No. 2 in the nation in opponents’ field goal shooting percentage. Michigan State can lock in the defense or get the job done with its stars taking over games on the offensive end of the court.

Louisville has a great team, as demonstrated by the fact that it won the Big East Tournament, arguably the toughest tournament for a team to win because in this case, the Cards had to win four games in four days at Madison Square Garden. The Cardinals have been winning the tight games as well, something that they didn’t do last year in the NCAA Tournament against the Morehead State Eagles. The team plays its tight defense, but it also likes to play a high octane style, and that is a style that we really might see a lot of in the Sweet 16 with both of these teams having a few days to get their legs back underneath them.

Peyton Siva and Keith Appling are two fantastic guards, and they are going to have to be the ones that get their teams off and running. Both tend to turn the ball over a bit much, but they are both keys for their team. Though Louisville has plenty of players with the potential to get to double digits in scoring, it doesn’t have a man like Draymond Green out there on the court. At just 6’7″, Green plays like a man that is a heck of a lot bigger. He is averaging a double-double per game this year, but he is a great passer as well, averaging just short of four assists per game. He is an asset on both sides of the court, and with one triple-double already in this tourney, Green is one man that can really take this game over all by himself.

We do think that Michigan State is going to find some way to survive this game. The deeper the tourney goes, the more dangerous that the Spartans and their championship winning Head Coach Tom Izzo really are. The Cardinals will stick inside of the number, but we think that that will be their only solace, as they have to head back to Louisville with nothing more than a claim to being in the Sweet 16 in 2012. We just trust that when push comes to shove, Green is going to get the job done for the Spartans, and he’ll make the difference.

Sweet 16 Free Pick: Louisville Cardinals +5

Wisconsin vs. Syracuse Projected Final Score: Michigan State 71 – Louisville 67

There are only eight spots available for the weekend in the NCAA Tournament, and today, we are making our Sweet 16 picks in the duel between the Cincinnati Bearcats and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Sweet 16 Matchup: #6 Cincinnati Bearcats vs. #2 Ohio State Buckeyes
Date: Thursday, March 22nd, 9:45 ET
Location: TD Garden, Boston, MA
Sweet 16 Odds: Ohio State -8
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

The Bearcats have already overcome some tremendous challenges just over the course of the last few weeks. They did the job against the Florida State Seminoles and the Texas Longhorns by using a tremendous defense, and this is the unit that is going to have to get them over the hump once again. Yancy Gates is a force in the middle, though he is clearly going to have his work cut out for him in this game against Jared Sullinger and Deshaun Thomas.

The two big men for the Buckeyes are simply dominating. They are averaging a combined 33.3 points and 14.4 boards per game, and they have blocked over 40 shots between them on the campaign. Both guys can shoot the ball from anywhere on the court, and we know that William Buford and Aaron Craft are both insane sharpshooters. Buford is averaging 14.7 points per game, and he is going to be the man that OSU has to rely on from the outside to make a big time statement.

Wager Web Sportsbook

Cincinnati does have some big offensive problems, and against a team that has a great defense as well like OSU, it can’t afford to get into any sort of a track meet. The M.O. for the Bearcats is to keep the pace of the game slow and to keep close, only to pull it out in the end. That’s what happened against FSU, and that is going to be what has to happen in this one to get to the Elite 8.

We just don’t think that the Buckeyes are going to get the job done when push comes to shove. They just don’t feel like a team that is mentally tough enough to beat a team like this one. It is inexplicable to us to think that OSU is laying eight points in this one. This is a game that we think is going to be close all the way to the wire, and if that turns out to be the case, we think that the Bearcats are the mentally tougher team. They’ll pull off the upset in the end in our eyes over, in what our eyes, is a very weak Ohio State squad in the head.

Sweet 16 Free Pick: Cincinnati Bearcats +8

Wisconsin vs. Syracuse Projected Final Score: Cincinnati 59 – Ohio State 57

There are 16 teams that are going to battle it out for the last eight spots in the Sweet 16 on Sunday, and we are going to be paying close attention to all of the duels and making our NCAA Tournament picks and predictions for all eight clashes.

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #11 North Carolina State Wolfpack vs. #3 Georgetown Hoyas
Date: Sunday, March 18th, 12:15 ET
Location: Nationwide Arena, Columbus, OH
March Madness Odds: Georgetown -4.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

It is going to be a very interesting afternoon in Columbus, especially if the Wolfpack can figure out to knock down their shots in a big time way in this one against one of the very few Big East teams that are left standing. Of course, there is a shot that NCSU might be the only team left from the ACC when this one is said and done as well, knowing that Florida State and UNC might really be up against it, and Virginia and Duke are already finished and back at home. The Hoyas seem to get bounced by teams that they have no business losing to each and every year, and this really could be no exception. Take the points for sure, but we don’t think that they’ll matter. NC State is the better team in our eyes for the dance.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: NC State +4.5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #9 Saint Louis Billikens vs. #1 Michigan State Spartans
Date: Sunday, March 18th, 2:45 ET
Location: Nationwide Arena, Columbus, OH
March Madness Odds: Michigan State -6.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

We could have our first No. 1 seed really be in some trouble on Sunday, and the Ken Pomeroy rankings suggest that just that could happen. The Billikens are a Top 15 team in the league according to the Pomeroy rankings, and that means that MSU could be in for a real fight. St. Louis is a team that really fights hard, and there aren’t all that many plays that you see anyone taking off. The Spartans really struggled at times with LIU-Brooklyn on Friday, and if that ends up being the case again on Sunday, the Big Ten champs could be on their way out the door. This is another one of these very live dogs that we think is going to come through in a big time way come Sunday.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Saint Louis +6.5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #8 Creighton Blue Jays vs. #1 North Carolina Tar Heels
Date: Sunday, March 18th, 5:15 ET
Location: Greensboro Coliseum, Greensboro, NC
March Madness Odds: North Carolina -8.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

The time is here for the Tar Heels to come out and make a big time statement. There just isn’t all that much of a way that we can see Creighton getting the job done, though there definitely is a bit of a precedent for a No. 8 or a No. 9 out of the Missouri Valley Conference knocking off a top seed… Just ask Kansas what it thought of Northern Iowa a couple years ago… Doug McDermott is great, but we think that we are going to see John Henson back in the fold on Sunday. As long as Henson is relatively healthy, he could be a man that makes a heck of a lot happen to shut down the big time Blue Jay. UNC has a number of ways that it could win this game by double digits. Creighton really only has one way that it doesn’t get shellacked, and we don’t see it happening.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: North Carolina -8.5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #15 Norfolk State Spartans vs. #7 Florida Gators
Date: Sunday, March 18th, 6:10 ET
Location: Century Link Center, Omaha, NE
March Madness Odds: Florida -14.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TNT

The Gators really caught the break of the tourney when they found out that they were going to get the MEAC champs from Norfolk State in the second round and not a 30-win Missouri team that the argument could be made should still have been a No. 1 seed in the dance. Florida has to be careful with this one though, knowing that it could go cold from beyond the arc and then all of a sudden end up in some issues with the No. 15 seed in the West. The Spartans are coming off of their greatest game in team history, but we just don’t see it happening again. Norfolk State had to do 100% of everything correctly, and even that was almost not nearly good enough to get the job done. This is the same type of team that NSU just beat, but this time around, it won’t be anywhere near as lucky. The orange and blue should advance relatively easily.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Florida -14.5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #13 Ohio Bobcats vs. #12 South Florida Bulls
Date: Sunday, March 18th, 7:10 ET
Location: Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, TN
March Madness Odds: South Florida -3
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TBS

There is one thing that you definitely know about this game, and that’s that it is going to be one in which neither team is going to be able to get up and run. The Bobcats aren’t generally all that quick of a team, and South Florida slows the game down to a pace that snails can usually keep up with. The Bulls have been getting just enough perimeter scoring and timely shots to stay alive in this tournament, and they have gotten incredibly lucky as well just to be in this position to be favored to get to the Sweet 16 after having played in the First Four. There is a point that fatigue starts to set in though, and whereas some of the more talented teams in the country will be able to overcome this with sheer talent, we don’t think that USF has the ability to do just that. Three games in five days we don’t think is going to cut it.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Ohio +3

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #15 Lehigh Mountain Hawks vs. #10 Xavier Musketeers
Date: Sunday, March 18th, 7:45 ET
Location: Greensboro Coliseum, Greensboro, NC
March Madness Odds: Xavier -3.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: truTV

Think that the oddsmakers understand that it is entirely possible that this Lehigh team could get through this game? Think about it for a second. Duke fans have all gone home with their tails between their legs, and Carolina fans are going to surely be rooting for the team that got rid of the Dookies. You might think that Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons are the best shooters on the court, but we just aren’t all that sure that that is the case. The whole world learned who CJ McCollum was on Friday night when he absolutely lit up the Blue Devils, and he might be able to get the job done again. This is most certainly a team that is capable of pulling off yet another upset and making a tremendous amount of history in the process. We just don’t see Xavier being good enough to get the job done yet again after another grueling game to take care of Notre Dame just to reach this point.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Lehigh +3.5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #10 Purdue Boilermakers vs. #2 Kansas Jayhawks
Date: Sunday, March 18th, 8:40 ET
Location: Century Link Center, Omaha, NE
March Madness Odds: Kansas -7.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TNT

Should the Jayhawks really be laying more than a touchdown to a Purdue team that has a whole heck of a lot of talent and certainly isn’t going to be all that intimidated? We aren’t so sure. We give Head Coach Matt Painter and the crew all of the credit in the world for being able to put aside St. Mary’s on Friday in spite of the fact that Robbie Hummel only scored 10 points. Often times when he isn’t on his game, Purdue is in trouble, yet on this day, against a very good team, the rest of the squad stepped it up. It is going to take a much better effort to be able to beat the Jayhawks, and we really don’t think that it is going to happen, knowing just how angry that KU looked when it took out Detroit on Friday night. That being said, we most certainly want the points on our side.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Purdue +7.5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #6 Cincinnati Bearcats vs. #3 Florida State Seminoles
Date: Sunday, March 18th, 9:40 ET
Location: Bridgestone Arena, Memphis, TN
March Madness Odds: Florida State -2
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TBS

Be sure to put the women and children to bed before watching this one on Sunday night. The Noles and the Bearcats are going to play some ugly, ugly basketball for sure, and they are both going to be trying to get the best of the other with a lot of chippy play. Michael Snaer didn’t do a thing for FSU on Friday, but he is going to be expected to do a lot of damage against a Cincinnati defense that has the ability to really lock down anyone in the land. Both of these teams struggled at times in their first round victories, but in the end, it is really hard to beat the Seminoles at the game that they excel at. It didn’t work for Virginia twice this year, and it isn’t going to work for the Bearcats either. The garnet and gold will be sure to take care of business and become the last team to punch its ticket to the Sweet 16.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Florida State -2

There are just 32 teams left in the field of 68, and the 32 duke it out in the second full round of the NCAA Tournament. Check out our second round March Madness picks for Saturday!

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #8 Kansas State Wildcats vs. #1 Syracuse Orange
Date: Saturday, March 17th, 12:15 ET
Location: Consol Energy Arena, Pittsburgh, PA
March Madness Odds: Syracuse -5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

This is going to be one of the most popular games in the entire tourney, as a good chunk of the world thinks that the Orange are just going to come out and get dumped by Kansas State. We know how bad Syracuse looked against UNC Asheville, but hindsight 20/20, what we saw for really the entire first round, especially on Friday were a bunch of teams that just didn’t look good against the little guys. Now, a K-State team that has had a history of upsets, but also has a history of getting frustrated by great defensive teams is going to have to go against this Syracuse side. Even though Fab Melo isn’t in the fold, we still think that the ‘Cuse have the defense to get through this one even if the offense isn’t at its best. The Wildcats had a great year, but on Saturday, we think that they are going to run into a team that is out to make a statement.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Syracuse-5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #7 Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. #2 Ohio State Buckeyes
Date: Saturday, March 17th, 2:45 ET
Location: Consol Energy Arena, Pittsburgh, PA
March Madness Odds: Ohio State -7.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

The second game of the day from Pittsburgh might be a slightly different story, though. Ohio State is playing great ball right now, and it really did its job against a Loyola Maryland team that could have been very stingy this year in the first full round of the dance. Gonzaga has proven that it doesn’t matter where it is playing; after all, it played a de facto road game against West Virginia on Thursday and blew the Mountaineers out of the building. Though we don’t think that the Zags are going to get through this one, we do think that this is going to be a game every single step of the way, and if that turns out to be the case, we most certainly want the points on our side. Jared Sullinger and the rest of the OSU bigs are going to be matched up relatively well against Robert Sacre and Elias Harris. The question is whether Kevin Pangos and the guards can get the job done. The Buckeyes are most certainly on upset alert.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Gonzaga +7.5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #6 Murray State Racers vs. #3 Marquette Golden Eagles
Date: Saturday, March 17th, 5:15 ET
Location: KFC Yum! Arena, Louisville, KY
March Madness Odds: Marquette -5.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

The oddsmakers need to learn that this Murray State team might be legit. The Racers played some fantastic defense in the first full round of the dance, and they were able to take care of a Colorado State team that had the ability to be really dangerous. With good three point shooting, great defense, and a chip on their shoulders, the Racers can beat anyone in the nation, and they are going to prove on Saturday that they were a legitimate team all year long and not just a team that won a lot of games by playing a bad schedule. It has been a bad, bad tourney for the Big East, and it is only going to get worse when push comes to shove when an Ohio Valley team takes out one of the few teams left standing out of the nine that originally made the dance from this conference.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Murray State +5.5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #5 Vanderbilt Commodores vs. #4 Wisconsin Badgers
Date: Saturday, March 17th, 6:10 ET
Location: The Pit Arena, Albuquerque, NM
March Madness Odds: Vanderbilt -1
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TNT

The night in the desert kicks off at 6:10 for a game that we think is going to be quite easy to figure out. This Vandy team has seen it all over the course of the last week or so. The team has had some games that it hasn’t had to work all that hard in, and it has had the games against the likes of Kentucky in which it had to work extremely hard just to pull off the upset. In the end, teams that win their conference tournaments like that often have games somewhere along the way where they just get very tired in the dance, and often, that is the game that they get knocked out. This Wisconsin team is a lot different than a Harvard team that was playing in the dance for the first time in three generations totaling over six decades. The Badgers are tough, they are mentally strong, and their defense is going to frustrate the heck out of John Jenkins. Sure, if Jenkins can stay on his game and not force up a ton of terrible shots, the Commodores are going to have a shot. However, this is just a bad, bad time for the ‘Dores to get a wakeup call, and in the end, Wisconsin is going to march on, and we tend to think march on in a big, big way to the Sweet 16.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Wisconsin +1

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #12 VCU Rams vs. #4 Indiana Hoosiers
Date: Saturday, March 17th, 7:10 ET
Location: Rose Garden, Portland, OR
March Madness Odds: Indiana -6
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TBS

Head Coach Shaka Smart knows how to win games in the dance, and if you didn’t believe it last year, you had better believe it this year. The problem that the Rams are going to have in this one is that they are going to be up against a team that is just as young and just as hungry as they are, and that is a big difference from what we have seen in the past with this team against teams like Georgetown, Florida State, and now most recently Wichita State, teams that really figured that they were the better team and were going to get rid of these little engines that could. Cody Zeller is the real deal, and we love the fact that IU was able to win in the first round against a solid New Mexico State team in spite of the fact that he and Christian Watford weren’t at their best. Will the Hoosiers win this one? We really think so, if for no other reason because we really believe in Head Coach Tom Crean. Is this a lot of points against a team that plays tremendous defense and forces a lot of timely mistakes? Absolutely. We’ll take the Rams, though we do still think that Indiana figures out how to narrow dismiss the CAA champs and the consummate Cinderella story of the dance.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: VCU +6

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #8 Iowa State Cyclones vs. #1 Kentucky Wildcats
Date: Saturday, March 17th, 7:45 ET
Location: KFC Yum! Arena, Louisville, KY
March Madness Odds: Kentucky -11
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

The Big Blue nation is going to be out in force once again on Saturday, knowing that the Wildcats are going to be playing against an Iowa State team that theoretically should be overmatched. The SEC runners up are still the most talented team in the nation for sure, but that doesn’t mean that they are in a position to cover double digits against every team in the land. Remember that ISU has beaten some great teams this year out of the Big XII, and it is not going to be intimidated playing a de facto road game against a team that is this good. Sure, this wouldn’t be like Lehigh upsetting Duke, but it isn’t all that far off in the whole magnitude of the dance. Will the Cyclones get the job done? We don’t really think so. However, Royce Pollard and the crew will really open some eyes by sticking around with the Cats shot for shot for the full 60 minutes. Perhaps in a different venue, we could see the upset, but we are definitely thinking that this is a great spot to take a hefty, hefty point spread.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Iowa State +11

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #11 Colorado Buffaloes vs. #3 Baylor Bears
Date: Saturday, March 17th, 8:40 ET
Location: The Pit Arena, Albuquerque, NM
March Madness Odds: Baylor -7.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TNT

There is a point that we have to realize that matters are just set up tremendously perfectly for these Bears. If madness were truly to ensure, we would be seeing Baylor get upset in this one, knowing that then, there would nothing but double digit seeds left for the Sweet 16 for the right to play a Kentucky team that still has to be grinning from ear to ear with the way that things have played out here in the South. However, we think that this is the reward for the Bears for being one of the last undefeated teams in the land this year, and they are going to be able to pummel a Colorado team that is out of a Pac-12 conference that has been miserable for the mass majority of the postseason regardless of what tourney you’re talking about. Remember that these two teams know all about each other as former conference foes, and we just don’t think that the Buffs have the ability to go up against a great team like this one and get the job done. In the end, Perry Jones III and the stacked Bears are going to romp into the Sweet 16, where they will be huge favorites to get into the Elite 8.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Baylor -7.5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #5 New Mexico Lobos vs. #4 Louisville Cardinals
Date: Saturday, March 17th, 9:40 ET
Location: Rose Garden, Portland, OR
March Madness Odds: Louisville -1.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TBS

The Big East remains the conference that we are going to go after, and it is amazing to think, but perhaps none of the nine could be around at the end of this weekend… Louisville is a team that got some steam by taking down a Davidson outfit that we think was massively overrated just based upon its name and the fact that it was on the verge of the Final Four just a few years ago. Now, there is a lot different challenge going against a New Mexico team that is clearly one of the best in the country amongst the non-power conferences. The Lobos have the team with the athleticism to frustrate this defense, and in the end, they are playing a bit of a home game a heck of a lot closer to home than Louisville is. The Cardinals are going to be the last Big East team of the day to get themselves into a lot of trouble, and though they did avoid the first round upset this year, they aren’t going to get into the second weekend of the dance. The Lobos are just too strong and could be continuing what amounts to be another very strong run, very deep into this tournament.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: New Mexico +1.5

The first Thursday of the NCAA Tournament is one of the best days of the year, and to kick off this great spectacle this week, we are going to be taking a look at our March Madness picks for the first four games on the docket for March Madness!

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #11 Colorado State Rams vs. #6 Murray State Racers
Date: Thursday, March 15th, 12:15 ET
Location: KFC Yum! Arena, Louisville, KY
March Madness Odds: Murray State -5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

Murray State and Colorado State are two teams that are awfully similar, knowing that they are both teams that love to shoot the ball from all over the court and sometimes have some issues rebounding and with defense. That’s not to say that both aren’t capable, because they both clearly are. There are a number of pundits that think that the Rams are going to be the team to pick off the Racers, but we aren’t so sure that that is the case. We do think that the winner of this game could be served to go on a big time run in this tournament, as both of these teams have a heck of a lot of potential. That being said, we are going to lay the points on Thursday to start off, as we don’t think that it was a brutal mistake that this Murray State team went the whole season with just one loss.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Murray State -5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #9 Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles vs. #8 Kansas State Wildcats
Date: Thursday, March 15th, 12:40 ET
Location: Consol Energy Arena, Pittsburgh, PA
March Madness Odds: Kansas State -5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: truTV

The second game of the dance is going to be an interesting one, as these 8/9 games are always intriguing. Southern Miss is a team that can play some defense, but in the end, it isn’t nearly as talented of a side as the Wildcats are. Kansas State is legit, and it has proven that it can beat anyone in the nation. Just ask Baylor and Missouri what they think of this KSU team. The oddsmakers have gotten this one right. Conference USA just can’t hold a candle to what the Big XII has been able to do this year, and we are definitely believers in the Wildcats trumping a Southern Miss team that we just don’t have any feelings for in a game that we don’t feel will ever really be all that close.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Kansas State -5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #13 Davidson Wildcats vs. #4 Louisville Cardinals
Date: Thursday, March 15th, 1:40 ET
Location: Rose Garden, Portland, OR
March Madness Odds: Louisville -7
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TBS

There are many that think Davidson is ripe for an upset here, but we just aren’t so sure whether this is a team that is living off of its past or not. Stephen Curry isn’t going to be walking through those doors for the Wildcats at any point, but we aren’t sold on this Louisville side either. It’s a great defensive team and we know it, but at some point, someone is going to pick this team off. The ‘Ville knows that it has a history of getting taken down by teams like this one (remember Morehead State last year?). We think that the Cards are going to figure out how to get out of this game, but we aren’t so sure that it is going to be by a touchdown. In the end, there’s too much Peyton Siva and the gang, and Louisville will get through, but it won’t be by more than a couple of buckets in what should be a great game.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Davidson +7

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #13 Montana Grizzlies vs. #4 Wisconsin Badgers
Date: Thursday, March 15th, 2:10 ET
Location: The Pit Arena, Albuquerque, NM
March Madness Odds: Wisconsin -9.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TNT

Wisconsin is one of these teams that is just tremendously predictable in the tourney. You know what you’re getting when you’re dealing with these Big Ten teams. They’re all great defensively, but in the end, most don’t have the guard play to be able to stick around when the going gets tough against these teams that catch some fire from beyond the arc. And in the end, a team like this Montana side always seems to take the Badgers down. We don’t think that that will be an exception this year either. The Grizz are a good outfit, and they have a heck of a lot of scoring potential. All five starters scored in double figures in the dominating win over Weber State in the Big Sky Final, and if that ends up being anywhere near the case in this one, Wisky had better be careful.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Montana +9.5

The first Thursday of the NCAA Tournament is one of the best days of the year, and to kick off this great spectacle this week, we are going to be taking a look at our March Madness picks for the first four games on the docket for March Madness!

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #14 BYU Cougars vs. #3 Marquette Golden Eagles
Date: Thursday, March 15th, 2:45 ET
Location: KFC Yum! Arena, Louisville, KY
March Madness Odds: Marquette -6
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: CBS

BYU put together a tremendous show on Tuesday when it erased the biggest deficit in NCAA Tournament history to knock off Iona in the First Four. Now all of a sudden, many think that the Cougars are this year’s version of VCU. We just don’t see it, though. We don’t think that BYU was all that great of a team this year, and we think that all of this travel is going to be too much for the team to survive, especially against a Marquette team that plays big time ball out of the Big East. Noah Hartsock is the real deal, and he could single handedly win this game, but in the end, we just don’t think that he has another miracle under his belt. This is a short point spread between a team that is a No. 3 seed and a No. 14.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Marquette -6

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #16 UNC Asheville Bulldogs vs. #1 Syracuse Orange
Date: Thursday, March 15th, 3:10 ET
Location: Consol Energy Arena, Pittsburgh, PA
March Madness Odds: Kansas State -5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: truTV

There has been a lot made about the fact that Fab Melo is going to be out of the lineup for the ‘Cuse for the whole NCAA Tournament. It wouldn’t be all that shocking to see the Orange win this game by a dozen in a game that never really all that close, but in the end, we just don’t know that that is going to be what happens. UNC Asheville is just one of these teams that isn’t all that good that isn’t going to be in this field for long. The Bulldogs don’t have the goods to be able to score against the Orange even though they average over 80 points per game. They don’t know what they are going to be in for in this one, and we think that Head Coach Jim Boeheim and the gang want to come out with sound and fury without Melo.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Syracuse -15.5

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #12 Long Beach State 49ers vs. #5 New Mexico Lobos
Date: Thursday, March 15th, 4:10 ET
Location: Rose Garden, Portland, OR
March Madness Odds: New Mexico -4
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TBS

Yuck. These are two teams that are certainly capable of a deep run into the dance, and we hate the fact that they are going to be playing against one another. The Lobos are one of the best ATS teams in the nation at 22-8 ATS, while Long Beach State is rock solid as well at 18-13 ATS. The 49ers haven’t beaten any of the top teams on their schedule this year, which makes it really dangerous in this case. New Mexico is the real deal on both sides of the ball, and this is a team that we think is going to be one of the biggest pains in the neck to get rid of in this tourney. We wouldn’t be all that surprised if Casper Ware and the gang get the job done for LBSU, but in the end, this is a game that goes to the Lobos more often than not.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: New Mexico -4

NCAA Tournament Matchup: #12 Harvard Crimson vs. #5 Vanderbilt Commodores
Date: Thursday, March 15th, 4:40 ET
Location: The Pit Arena, Albuquerque, NM
March Madness Odds: Vanderbilt -5.5
NCAA Tournament TV Schedule: TNT

This is the first time that the Crimson have been in the dance in over six decades, but they are going to have a heck of a battle in this one. The Commodores are a very talented team, and that was proven by the fact that they won the SEC. We know that this Vandy team is dangerous, but we think that it is going to be a squad that gets beaten by a team that it might be better than. Harvard isn’t in a position to win this one without a heck of a lot of luck and some big time offense. The Crimson just don’t have that, and though Head Coach Tommy Amakar has done a great job over the course of his tenure here at Harvard, this is going to be a big time learning experience for a team that just doesn’t seem all that ready for this spotlight.

NCAA Tournament Free Pick: Vanderbilt -5.5
