This is just a total mismatch on paper, and it is going to make for a game that could be a one-sided blowout. We love that the Timberwolves keep playing as hard as they can in spite of the fact that they have a ton of missing players from the fold, not the least of which are three big men that would probably be averaging a combined 40 points and 25 boards per game if they were in the lineup. Playing against some teams works, but going against a healthy Houston team on the road when it is clicking on all cylinders offensively is just going to be far too much to ask for. The Rockets are amongst the best teams in basketball offensively, averaging nearly 107 points per game on the campaign. They are getting great contributions from G James Harden and F Chandler Parsons, amongst others. About the only thing that we fear is the idea of G Ricky Rubio taking over a third straight game. Rubio came up just shy of a second straight triple-double against the Indiana Pacers. He might be able to do that again versus Houston, but even if he does, it’s still difficult to justify taking less than two touchdowns in Houston.

The Heat are the class of the NBA right now, and they continue to win game after game. The streak is now at 14 in a row, after a huge rally to beat the New York Knicks on Sunday at Madison Square Garden. The question is whether the team is going to be able to dial up another great performance like that one without a day off on the road, halfway across the country from where it was yesterday. Minnesota is coming back from a bad West Coast swing in which it was killed in games against the Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Lakers (following an overtime loss to the Phoenix Suns). The last time the Timberwolves beat a team that is going to even possibly make the playoffs was back on January 19th against the Houston Rockets, and since that point, they are just 0-11 SU and 0-9-2 ATS in games against teams that are ranked in the Top 10 in their respective conferences. That’s about as bad as it gets. There’s no reason to believe that the Heat won’t figure out how to dig deep once again in this one and put up a great performance to run this winning streak to 15 games in convincing fashion.

G Kobe Bryant has lit up the Timberwolves in his career, and he and his Lakers have 20 consecutive wins to show for it in this series. For as much as we would love to fade the men from Tinseltown, we just can’t do it on Thursday night. The Lakers are playing solid basketball, and they have won six straight against teams that likely aren’t going to get into the playoffs. LA is just 7-13 ATS in its last 20 games, but in that mix are several games which came quite close to the cover line. Minnesota is likely to go into this one without F Andrei Kirilenko, and it has to be a bit concerning that C Nikola Pekovic has what has been classified as an undisclosed injury that has left him listed as questionable for this one. We already know that Minnesota has been undermanned for most of the season, and its streak of going just 2-6 ATS in the last six games in this series surely isn’t going to help matters any. The Lakers are playing like a team on a mission right now, and we think that they are going to get a double digit victory on Thursday night and blow away the Timberwolves.

They are clearly the worst team in a very good Northwest Division, and they are going to be taking on the class of the division in Oklahoma City. The Thunder are off to a rocky start to the second half of the season, as they followed their first-half ending loss to the Miami Heat with another defeat at the hands of the Houston Rockets. They’re back at home though, where they are 23-4 on the season, and they theoretically shouldn’t have a tough time disposing of the T’Wolves… Theoretically… We’re not really all that sure that will be the case, though. For whatever reason, Oklahoma City has really always had a difficult time disposing of this stingy Minnesota outfit. The Thunder are 6-1 SU in the last seven games in this divisional showdown, but they are just 1-6 ATS in those games. Minnesota always seems to bring its best for the Thunder. The road has been cruel this year to the Timberwolves, but we think that this one is destined to be a cover against what should be a huge number on Friday night.

The Spurs are set to start the Rodeo Road Trip, and this is generally the point in the season where they start to take a bit of a nosedive in the standings. They’ve got plenty of room to work with going into these next three grueling weeks of play away from the Lone Star State, but there are plenty of tough games on the slate as well. The roadie is likely going to start without F Tim Duncan or G Manu Ginobili in the lineup, as both are fighting injuries. The Timberwolves though, are one of the most banged up teams in the league, as they just don’t have the goods to continually fight it out with the best teams in the NBA. However, we do think that this is a nice spot to back the hosts on Wednesday. Minnesota has won and covered back to back meetings here at the Target Center against the Spurs, and it has at least challenged them in three of the last four meetings in this building. The opening games of the Rodeo Road Trip aren’t any fun for sure, and with the key cogs out of the fold, we could be in for another upset when push comes to shove even though the talent level for these two teams just isn’t close.

The Lakers are back on national television again, and again we ask ourselves why that’s the case. The team is dysfunctional at the moment, especially on the road. Of course, if C Dwight Howard doesn’t play and F Pau Gasol ends up back in the starting lineup once again, matters might turn out to be better for this team in the long run, knowing that this roster needs a shakeup in a big way. This is like the Super Bowl for the Timberwolves though, as they would love nothing more than to beat the Lakers in front of their fans in a season where very little is going right on the injury front. The opportunity is there to get the job done though, through outworking the Lakers. That’s what the Phoenix Suns did two nights ago, and that’s why the T’Wolves are going to do on Friday. Minnesota isn’t the better of these two teams, but as we have seen before with LA, if G Kobe Bryant can’t put the team on his back, there is a real chance that it is going to fall apart.

Go back to just four or five years ago. Did you ever think that you’d see a Timberwolves/Clippers game televised on national TV? That’s where we’re at though, and there’s a chance that this could be a playoff preview as well. Minnesota is fighting to stay in the playoff race, though it’s going to be difficult to do so without F Kevin Love in the fold. The Wolves dropped all four games both SU and ATS on this most recent road trip, but the two days off and the fact that they are back at home should energize them again. LA has won five out of six games, the last two of which came without G Chris Paul in the lineup. Keep a close eye on CP3′s status for this game. We don’t think that it’s going to matter, though. Lob City really is due for a letdown after covering by 11 and 30.5 points in its last two games. The oddsmakers are going to look back at those games and place a number that is far too big on the board in this one. Remember that the Timberwolves went to Staples Center and challenged the Clips the first time around, and they outrebounded the men in red 52-35. If that’s the case again in this one, this could be a very close game. Updated 9:00 AM: Keep an eye on who is and isn’t playing in this game for the Timberwolves, as the flu bug has caught the locker room. If most of the players with the flu play, we still really like Minnesota. If not, stay away from this game.

Denver is very quietly finding ways to win games at the moment, and the fact that the club has only played 11 games at home is quite scary for the rest of the Western Conference. It is so difficult to come to Pepsi Arena, it isn’t even funny, and the Timberwolves are about to find that one out. Minnesota just doesn’t have the guard play to keep up with what Denver is going to bring to the table, and one the team gets out and starts to run, it’s very difficult to keep up. It is going to take a yeoman’s effort tonight out of F Kevin Love to have any chance to win this game, and he is going to get a very tough draw on the defensive end of the court with C JaVale McGee bodying up with him. If Love is kept in check, like we think it is very possible that he might be, there is no reason to think that the Nuggs won’t easily make it 11-1 this year at home, and 21-13 ATS on the season. This is clearly the superior of the two teams, and it will show in the form of a double digit win for the hosts on Thursday night.

The club has played 11 games on the road this year, and it has just a 5-6 SU record. Meanwhile, the Heat are rolling at home, going 11-2 SU and 7-6 ATS. The team has played five straight games here at home, and it has won and covered three of the last four. That being said, we really like Minnesota in this one. G Ricky Rubio is back, and he has to be able to do more than he did last night against the Orlando Magic when he went scoreless and shot 0-for-3 from the field. The T’Wolves played a horrendous second half against Orlando last night, and it should come out fired up to take this one from the perceived best team in the NBA. Miami has bigger fish to fry than this, and just as we have seen in the past in games against teams like the Wizards and the Warriors, some unexpected teams can come to town and upset Miami. Don’t be surprised if this is one of those nights. We definitely want the points on our side.

With this game, we immediately are drawn to the ‘over’. Four of the last five meetings in this series have resulted in games going past the ‘total’, including a 149-140 overtime game last year that easily eclipsed the number of 210. Oklahoma City has won 12 games in a row, and in all but one of those 12 games, it has scored at least 100 points. Yes, the defense has played formidable ball in that stretch as well, but the truth of the matter is that Minnesota should be able to at least remotely stick around and not get its doors totally blown off. If that’s the case, we have to remember that before going to the Sunshine State, where both the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat shut them down, the T’Wolves had scored at least 108 points in three straight games. G Ricky Rubio is back in the fold, and he has had a couple of games under his belt and a couple of days off at this point, and that’s only going to make this offense all the more efficient. We really don’t see a way that this one doesn’t get to at least 200.

The Clippers and the Timberwolves are teams that are both going in the same type of direction, though LA is clearly ahead of Minnesota on the curve. We really like the way that the T’Wolves are playing right now though, as they have back F Kevin Love, and he is playing like one of the best players in the NBA. Just last night, he was good for a 20/20 against the Sacramento Kings in a game that was won on the road. This isn’t a team that is going to be able to go on the road and win games like this yet, but the games are getting closer and closer, and there is no doubt that the club is getting more and more competitive. The Clips have lost four games in a row both SU and ATS, including dropping to the New Orleans Hornets by seven points as 13 point favorites at home two nights ago. It just doesn’t seem right that the Clips are favored by such a big margin. We think that they’ll get back on track and win this game, but Love and the budding Timberwolves should keep it close.

The Timberwolves are having some big time problems scoring to start off the year, as they have averaged just 89 points per game thus far on the campaign. Missing Kevin Love in the paint hurts a lot, but the real problem has come at the point guard spot, where Ricky Rubio still isn’t over last year’s injury, and JJ Barea is now out with a concussion like symptom. The Nets are expected to slow it down this year as well, and without Gerald Wallace, who has an ankle injury and is considered questionable for this one, the offense would be without its best swingman. These two teams did play a relatively high scoring 108-105 game last year, but that was early enough in the campaign to see both Love and Rubio on the court. Take these two away, and we are seriously questioning whether Minnesota can get into the mid-90s to be able to reach the ‘total’ in this game. Don’t be all that shocked if this game ends up producing around 180-185 points, which is about where the T’Wolves have been coming in at all year long.
