The Lakers are still making the push towards the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, and there is a great opportunity tonight to make up a game on the Utah Jazz, who have to take on the Oklahoma City Thunder. Winning out might ultimately be the only real option here for the Lakers, who need to essentially close two games on Utah in a span of just seven games. Perhaps they could afford a slip or two, but to do so to a team like New Orleans would be devastating. Los Angeles really isn’t playing bad basketball at the moment. It was able to beat the Memphis Grizzlies at home last Tuesday, and that game came on the heels of covers against both the Dallas Mavericks and the Sacramento Kings. Generally speaking, since the middle of March, the Lakers have played pretty well in situations where they really should be winning, and in spite of the fact that the Hornets have a tendency of being a bit stingy, we do think that this is a game that the boys from Tinseltown are going to ultimately win by double digits. Anything less than finishing the season sweep and moving to 3-1 ATS in this series this year would be a huge disappointment.

This really isn’t a good spot to be backing the Hornets when push comes to shove. Yes, New Orleans has been playing some great defensive basketball over the course of its last few games, but we have to remember that last night featured a physical game against the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls really took this team to the cleaners, holding it down in the mid-80s in scoring once again, something that shouldn’t be considered out of the ordinary in the Bayou. The Cavs are wrapping up a seven-game home stand tonight after a full week off thanks to the All-Star Break, and we think that they are set to put forth a good effort tonight. Ever since F Marreese Speights and G Wayne Ellington got to Cleveland, the Cavaliers have been a heck of a lot better team, and we think that that will continue on Wednesday night. This is the first meeting of the year of these two teams, and though the Hornets have won back to back games in this building since F LeBron James left town, that streak will come to an end tonight.

Oh, oddsmakers… When will you learn? The Lakers have been one of the worst ATS teams in the league this year at 18-25-1, and it feels like every single time they get on a bit of a roll and everyone thinks that it is going to win 10 in a row, it loses a game like this one. Sure, LA has played well in back to back games against the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Utah Jazz, but all of that is going to come to a close in this one. The Hornets are 8-4 SU and 9-3 ATS over the course of their last 12 games, all but one of which have come with G Eric Gordon back in the lineup. The Hornets really don’t have that superstar yet to lead the team to the next level, but they are playing good team basketball, exactly what tends to frustrate the heck out of the Lakers. Oh sure, on any given night, G Kobe Bryant could go off for 40 points and put LA on his back to carry the team to victory, but that just isn’t happening often enough for our tastes. It’s not Bryant’s fault; the supporting cast around him just isn’t all that great. Take the points on Tuesday, but expect an outright upset.

When the Bucks and Hornets met up back on November 17th, the result was easily the highest scoring Milwaukee game of the year, a 117-113 win for the hosts at the Bradley Center. Since that point, the Bucks have scored more than 98 points just once and more than 93 just twice. New Orleans went on the road from there and dropped 105 three times, though two of those three were in losing efforts. Rookie F Anthony Davis is still dealing with a high ankle sprain and will miss this game, but that doesn’t change our opinions on the Hornets. Milwaukee is just 1-4 ATS in its last five visits here to New Orleans Arena, and it is 0-4 ATS in the last four in this series overall. After back to back home defeats by double digits, capped by a 21-point blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder to start the month of December, we expect to see the Hornets really fire back in this one to get this home stand back on the right foot again. Milwaukee is coming off of an emotional 91-88 win over the Boston Celtics from two nights ago, and it looks like it is going to be the subject of a mild upset tonight.

Yes, we have seen the Hornets go 3-0 ATS and 2-1 SU over the course of the first three games of the year, but when they have allowed 90 points, they have lost. Philly is going to bring some major defense to town, and Head Coach Doug Collins isn’t going to be happy with the fact that his team has allowed 210 points over the course of two games to the New York Knicks thus far this year, and he is going to want this road trip to get off on the right foot. Look for the defense to really kick it into gear for the Sixers on Wednesday night, as they pull off a low scoring victory in the Bayou against the Hornets.

Game Analysis: Tonight is the all important game 5 in a series tied at two games each. The Lakers were able to win one of two in New Orleans but are coming off a 93-88 loss Sunday in a thrilling back and forth game. Sunday’s game was a special one for Chris Paul who led his team with a triple double, his first of the season. 27 points, 13 rebounds and 15 assists is a monster game and for it to come in the playoffs makes it a clutch performance too. Paul has almost single handily carried the Hornets on his back in this series and given the Lakers nation something to really worry about. If his play weren’t enough to hurt the Lakers Kobe Bryant aka “mamba” tweaked his foot late in game three and is expected to play in game 4. At first the injury was thought to be a sprained ankle which might be the lesser of two evils for the Lakers, however it is now being called a injury to his foot. Only time will tell what the ramifications are of this injury however there is no doubt that the Lakers’ fate rests in whether Kobe can play or not. As for game 5 we go back to the Staples Center in LA where the crowd will be in rare form. All the celebrities will be in their expensive courtside seats and this is a very important game in the Lakers quest for the three-peat. LA has only played one game up to their standards in this series so far and that was the 100-86 win in New Orleans on Friday. However in their playoff history since 1996 they are 20-8 ATS in game 5’s of all playoff series, and 8-3 in games 5’s the last three years. LA knows when to turn it on and with their backs against the wall are in need of a big game. That is right when they are about to have one of those games when we say “Oh yeah, that’s right they are that good”. Game 5 will be the wake up call for us all with a convincing win for the Lakers. I also like the over 183 in this game because when the Lakers are pressured they somehow almost always come up with one of their best efforts. That will include well over 100 points against the Hornets and a comfortable win by double digits.
