New York Yankees (Phil Hughes) +110
Baltimore Orioles (Miguel Gonzalez) -120
Total: 9

Something is definitively wrong with the Baltimore bullpen right now, and we aren’t so sure how to put our finger on it. The team was beaten once again in a game that it should have won, this time allowing the game-winning runs in the 10th inning on Monday night to the Yankees. Now, the pen is sure to be getting in plenty of work once again in this game, knowing that RHP Miguel Gonzalez is making his first start since going on the disabled list back on May 3rd. Gonzalez does have decent splits this year, but any time that we’re talking about a pitcher that had a blister on his thumb, we are concerned. We aren’t all that wild over RHP Phil Hughes either, but at least we know what we’re getting with Hughes. He has a 5.88 ERA this season, an ERA that has only risen over the course of his last three starts when he has posted an 8.16 ERA. However, the righty knows that he has the ability to come up with some good outings, and if he can just get off to a decent start, he did have four straight very good outings before getting rocked in his last two efforts. If Hughes can turn this into a bullpen game, we like our chances by backing the Bronx Bombers, even on the road against the struggling Orioles.

MLB Lines & Probable Starting Pitchers
New York Yankees (CC Sabathia) Off
Baltimore Orioles (Freddy Garcia) Off
Total: Off

The Yankees are going to be sending LHP CC Sabathia to the mound after a day off thanks to Mother Nature. The last three times that Sabathia went up against the Orioles, he was able to lead the team to a win. We just aren’t all that sure about the way that the southpaw is pitching right now. Sabathia hasn’t allowed that many runs, but he has allowed plenty of hits, and he has also given up a whopping eight home runs in his last six games. That’s just not going to cut it against a Baltimore team that has to be frustrated that it was swept in a three-game series by the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend. If the Orioles can keep their bullpen intact, something that certainly didn’t happen on Saturday, they should have a real chance to win this game. We aren’t going to need the O’s to win this 100% of the time by any stretch of the imagination. We know that this team is going to be underrated, knowing that the oddsmakers have favored Sabathia by relatively big margins virtually every time that he has been on the bump.

MLB Odds & Probable Starting Pitchers
New York Yankees (Phil Hughes) +105
Kansas City Royals (Wade Davis) -115
Total: 8.5

This is the very first time that the Royals have been favored to win a series over the Yankees in well over a decade, and we aren’t even how far that streak goes back. However, Kansas City has to know that this is one of the biggest series that it has played in quite some time, as New York is the type of team that you have to beat, especially at home, if you are going to contend for a spot in the playoffs over the course of a 162-game season. It’s not a great pitching matchup for either side, knowing that neither man has been throwing the ball all that well. RHP Phil Hughes has led the Yankees to three straight wins, but we think all of that is going to come to a close in this one. RHP Wade Davis knows that this is why he was brought to Kansas City. Sure, RHP James Shields was the focal point of that trade which brought Davis from Tampa Bay to KC, but it’s a big start nonetheless, especially for a man who has a 4.75 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP thus far this season. Davis is going to have to keep the ball down in the zone in this one, and that’s something that he has historically done quite well against the Bronx Bombers. If he does that, these Royals should be on their way to a big time victory.

On Sunday night, the Toronto Blue Jays will be led onto the field by R.A. Dickey, as they play host to the New York Yankees, who will be countering with Phil Hughes. The first pitch from Yankee Stadium is set to be thrown out at 1:05 p.m. ET

Toronto Blue Jays (R.A. Dickey) -103
New York Yankees (Phil Hughes) -107

The Blue Jays are still trying to get over this horrid start to their season, one that has seen them lose $871 for their bettors over the course of the first 24 games of the campaign coming into the weekend. Toronto had high hopes for the man that is expected to be on the bump on Sunday is RHP RA Dickey. We’ll say this about Dickey – He does have a 1.15 WHIP and a 2.45 ERA in his last three starts. Of course, for the season, the righty is only getting 2.0 runs of support, and that’s why he is just 2-3 thus far on the campaign. The good news for Dickey is that he is opposing RHP Phil Hughes on Sunday. Hughes has a 5.14 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP this year, and it is clear that he is going to be in a heck of a lot of trouble against this Toronto offense. Hughes has had no success whatsoever over the course of the last several seasons, and though he did go 16-13 last season, we know that was a product of more good fortune than good pitching. Go with Dickey and the Jays to outdo the Bronx Bombers on Sunday Afternoon Baseball on TBS.

Arizona Diamondbacks (Brandon McCarthy) +117
New York Yankees (Ivan Nova) -125
Total: 9

The Yankees and the Diamondbacks haven’t met since 2010, and this is the first time that they have ever met this early in the season. The Diamondbacks might be checked out for these three games in the Bronx, as they came from the West Coast, have these three games at Yankee Stadium, and then have to head right to Denver to take on the Colorado Rockies. The pitching matchup in this game though, is one that we really like for Arizona. We’re convinced that RHP Ivan Nova is nothing but a gas can for the Bronx Bombers. Nova has looked awful this season. The only time we saw him was a whopping 11 days ago when he allowed four runs in 4.2 innings of work before getting run against the Detroit Tigers. This is a man that pitched terribly in the second half of last season, and we think that Major League hitters have simply caught up with what the righty is bringing. McCarthy has been beaten up pretty badly thus far this year as well, but perhaps getting away from hope is just what the doctor ordered. McCarthy has posted a solid ERA in the threes in each of the last two seasons, and we think that he is going to look a whole heck of a lot more like that man than the one that started this year with a 7.71 ERA in 11.2 innings of work.

Diamondbacks @ Yankees Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks +117

MLB Lines & Probable Starting Pitchers
New York Yankees (CC Sabathia) +172
Detroit Tigers (Justin Verlander) -179
Total: 7

The first gut instinct here in Motown on Sunday afternoon is that backing LHP CC Sabathia and the Yankees has to be a good idea. Sabathia is still a tremendous horse in spite of the fact that he was knocked around just a bit over the course of his first start of the season, and there is no way that the Bronx Bombers really should ever be a +172 team regardless of the situation. However, when we look at the history of this series, and we look at the way that the Yankees are hitting the ball right now, we certainly are not all that impressed. New York has lost six straight games in this series dating back to last postseason, including getting reamed by an aggregate score of 24-8 in the last three games, all of which have been played here at Comerica Park. In this series alone, the Tigers have 16 runs and have run New York’s starting pitchers out of the game in the fifth inning. On top of that, Justin Verlander is flat out the man, and he virtually never loses at home. He pitched here in the playoffs last year against the Yankees and held them to just one run in 8.1 innings of work to get the win in that game, and we think that he is easily going to do the same again in this one.

Boston Red Sox (Clay Buchholz) +107
New York Yankees (Hiroki Kuroda) -112
Total: 8

The Yankees and the Red Sox are used to being two of the top teams in the league, but this season, we really aren’t so sure that these aren’t the two worst teams in the AL East. The Bronx Bombers really looked terrible on Monday night, losing for the first time on Opening Day in 17 years. This lineup really isn’t all that great, and Boston truly looks like the better of these two teams. RHP Hiroki Kuroda was one of the top pitchers for the Yankees last year, going 16-11 with a 3.32 ERA. There is a point that Kuroda is going to fall apart, as he is 38 years old, and we find it unbelievable that he is going to post similar numbers to what he had last year pitching in the Bronx once again. RHP Clay Buchholz was one of the lone bright spots to last season for Boston. The bad news for Buchholz is that he is just 2-5 with a 7.19 ERA against the Yankees in his career. The good news is that this is absolutely the worst version of the Yanks that he has ever faced. New York really shouldn’t be favored in this game, and we are going to keep attacking the Yankees until the oddsmakers adjust the MLB odds on them. New York doesn’t look like anything more than perhaps a 75-win team to us.

ALCS Game 4 Baseball Picks
New York Yankees
vs.
Detroit Tigers

Date: Thursday, October 18th, 4:00 ET
Location: Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
MLB Betting Odds: Detroit -102
MLB Playoffs On TV: TBS

The ALCS continues with Game 4 on Thursday following Wednesday’s rain out, and that means that we are going to be making our baseball picks and playoff predictions for the game between the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees.

We knew that the Yankees were in a whole heck of a lot of trouble after Game 1 of the ALCS, and that continues to ring true. It is anyone’s guess as to who is going to be in the lineup and where they are going to be batting in the order for Manager Joe Girardi, and that type of inconsistency drives us nuts. Of course, it’s the fact that the Yankee bats have been consistently horrid that has caused Girardi to have to make such insane changes. Remember that if you took over 1.5 hits in this series for all three of Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher, and Robinson Cano, you’d be a loser on all three accounts.

The first inkling that we have is that CC Sabathia should never be a de facto pick ‘em in a playoff game. After all, he is coming off of a game in which he went the distance in beating the Baltimore Orioles in Game 5 of the ALDS, and that was his fifth straight start going at least eight innings. However, we absolutely love the man that he is playing against tonight, Max Scherzer, who has had plenty of rest with just one start under his belt since September 23rd. Scherzer knows that he can go out there and give it everything that he has, knowing that he is finished pitching until the World Series anyway, and he has a rested bullpen behind him that can bail him out if need be. And in the end, if this game is lost, there are still three more chances to close out the men from the Bronx.

But all of that is why we are taking Detroit right now. The Yankees are a mess, and everyone knows it. There’s just no two ways around it. Sabathia can go out there, giving up one run in eight innings and lose 1-0. And the might be exactly what ends up happening.

Even the mighty Yankees might not be able to get out of this one. It wouldn’t be the first time that we saw the Bronx Bombers come back in a series to win after losing the first two games at home, but this is a heck of a lot different challenge. This year, the team isn’t hitting, but more importantly, it has a brutal set of pitching matchups ahead. Granted, winning this game can give CC Sabathia a chance to level this series on Wednesday, but that’s a task that is a heck of a lot easier said than done.

Justin Verlander is going to be on the bump in this one, and that means that it is going to be awfully tough for this struggling lineup to score any runs. Verlander has now led his team to six straight victories, but the best of the bunch came in Game 5 against the Oakland A’s five days ago. In that game, Verlander went the distance and allowed just a total of five base runners. He struck out 11 and didn’t allow a run, making sure that the bullpen didn’t have a chance to blow it on him. Phil Hughes is the sacrificial lamb that is going to have to figure out how to beat Verlander on the road. That’s a tough enough task for anyone, let alone someone who probably is the fourth best option that his team has in the rotation.

Here’s the problem with backing Verlander in this one: Anything can happen in any given day. New York’s bats aren’t going to continue being this bad. It might look like this is an impossible task against Verlander, but a team this good doesn’t ultimately deserve to be a +170 underdog against anyone.

MLB Playoffs On TV: TBS

Our 2012 MLB playoffs picks continue on Sunday night in New York, where the New York Yankees battle it out with the Detroit Tigers. Join us for our MLB predictions for what should be a remarkable Game 2 of the ALCS.

The Yankees are in some serious trouble right now. Manager Joe Girardi had already made up his mind that he was going to throw both Hiroki Kuroda and CC Sabathia on short rest for Games 2 and 3 in this series so he could bring them both back on regular rest for the prospective Games 6 and 7. However, the Yanks are going to have to win at least two of the next four to make sure that that is even remotely relevant, and it is clear that this series is going to be going back to Motown with the Bronx Bombers in bad shape even if they win this one.

Not only is Kuroda going on short rest and pitching in an afternoon game, which takes away another three hours of rest time before pitching again, but he is also going to be doing it with a bullpen that has thrown a lot of innings of late. Every pitcher except for Joba Chamberlain threw last night for the Yankees, including the only other man that could have been an option to start, David Phelps. Now to make matters worse, Derek Jeter’s season is over after he broke his ankle in the 12th inning last night. Goodness knows what Manager Joe Girardi is going to be able to do with this game.

Anibal Sanchez isn’t the greatest pitcher in the world, but at least he has the majority of his bullpen available for him. There is a serious need for a closer for sure for Detroit after Jose Valverde melted down for the second time in the last four nights, but at least that’s just one man that needs to be replaced, not seemingly an entire team. Barring some more heroics out of Raul Ibanez and the sorts, this is going to be the continuation of devastation for the Yankees.

ALCS Game 1 Baseball Picks
Detroit Tigers
vs.
New York Yankees

Date: Saturday, October 13th, 8:07 ET
Location: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
MLB Betting Odds: New York -125
MLB Playoffs On TV: TBS

The ALCS continues with Game 1 on Saturday, and that means that we are going to be making our baseball picks and playoff predictions for the game between the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers might have been the team that had the day off on Friday, but in the end, there was just no rest for the wary, as they had to travel to New York right away on very short notice to prepare for the first two games of the ALCS.

Whereas we were all hoping to get the chance to see Justin Verlander pitch against CC Sabathia to start this series off, the two are going to have to wait until Game 4 to see each other, and that will be the only time that they do. Instead, it’s up to Andy Pettitte and Doug Fister to start this series off, and presumably, they will both pitch in Game 5, assuming that there is a Game 5. Both men pitched well in their first starts of the playoffs, but the difference is that Fister’s seven innings were good enough for a ‘W’. Pettitte’s seven innings dealt him a defeat.

The truth of the matter is that we think Manager Joe Girardi made the right call by sticking Alex Rodriguez on the bench, and the Yankees might be a better team for it. They might not win this series, but Pettitte on the mound in the Bronx in his career has been en fuego. Even though we know that he is ancient by baseball standards, he also has the ability to do a heck of a lot of damage over the course of seven innings or so, and the moment is never too big for him. Fister and the Tigers will drop this first game.

The 2012 MLB playoffs continue on Friday in New York, where the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles are going to do battle with one another. Don’t miss our MLB playoff picks and our Orioles vs. Yankees Game 5 ALDS predictions for the baseball playoffs!

When you think of the big time pitchers in the big time games, is there a man that you would rather have out there than CC Sabathia? That’s the same argument that we made yesterday with Justin Verlander, and it paid off, as the man of the hour pitched a complete game shutout and never gave up even though the game was 6-0 and no bullpen should have blown that lead in the last two innings. Sabathia will get the ball in the same type of spot here for the Yankees, and he is going to be expected to at least think about going the whole way, especially after the bullpen had to work oh so hard last night in an effort to close out this pesky Baltimore outfit.

Jason Hammel is the man that is going to be dueling on the other side of the mound for the O’s. He wasn’t nearly as special in Game 1 as Sabathia was, and there is no realistic way that we could see him starting and finishing this game barring a total miracle. Manager Buck Showalter knows that it is all hands on deck, and save for last night’s starter, Joe Saunders, everyone has to be considered available to use.

Anything can happen in one game, and we know it. Sabathia is great, and he is the only man that has the ability to win this game and this series all by himself. However, we are going to go with the Orioles. If last year, the O’s put out the effort to come back and win a wild Game 162 against the Boston Red Sox, they can do it here, too. As the old saying goes, when you believe that anything is possible, anything indeed, is possible.

Baltimore Orioles @ New York Yankees Pick: Baltimore Orioles +185
