The Orange Bowl is one of the games on the college football bowl schedule this year, and today, I’m set to make my NCAA football pointspread picks for the ‘total’ in this clash. The Northern Illinois Huskies and the Florida State Cowboys are going to do battle at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL. Join me for my Orange Bowl tips for this 8:30 p.m. ET kickoff that can be seen on ESPN.

The question that I have to ask myself about the Orange Bowl this year is whether the Seminoles are going to play defensively. If they do, there really should be no way that these Huskies should do all that much against this unit. If they don’t, this could end up being a dogfight that results in 40 points a side, because the one thing that I do have the utmost confidence in is the fact that QB EJ Manuel is going to put some points on the board against a defense that got some fat and impressive stats off of some awfully weak teams that had no business competing against a BCS team this year.

2013 Orange Bowl
Northern Illinois Huskies (12-1, 9-2-2 ATS) +13.5
Florida State Cowboys (11-2, 3-9 ATS) -13.5
Over/Under 58.5

Many are going to point to the fact that both DE Tank Carradine and DE Brandon Jenkins are out of the lineup for the Noles as a big time problem, but I just don’t see it that way. DE Bjorn Werner is going to want to prove that he should be a Top 10 pick in the NFL Draft, and a good game in the Orange Bowl could do just that for him. This is still a very deep defense with a lot to prove, especially after the unit was trampled at times by the Florida Gators. As we saw against the triple option of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, the gimmicks aren’t going to work against Florida State, and that will remain true against the Huskies as well.

Take all of the yards and all of the points that QB Jordan Lynch put up this year and throw them out the window in this one. Remember that the Iowa Hawkeyes held Lynch and the gang down to just 17 points, and the Kansas Jayhawks kept NIU down to just 23. If that’s what two bad AQ conference schools were able to do to the Huskies, what are the Seminoles going to do to them with a full month to prepare for the game? Though in the end, the disappointing Seminoles might not show up to play and get run over, I have to think that they are really going to care about this one and get the job done. If that’s the case, this could be a shutout.

To beat the Orange Bowl odds, you have to put a heck of a lot of work into the game. Our college football expert handicappers have done just that here at Cappers Info, and we think that we have the winning edge for the clash between the Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Florida State Seminoles.

Orange Bowl Picks: Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Florida State Seminoles

There are a couple of countering forces going against each other in this game, and that makes this one of the tougher ones to handicap, especially for someone that is jaded by wearing garnet and gold glasses (figure we should get that out there in the first place). This is a big game with a big prize at the end of it, and Florida State has a good history of playing in bowl games of late. The team has won four bowl games in a row, and the only bowl games that it has lost of late were the 2007 Music City Bowl when seemingly half of the team was suspended and the 2005 Orange Bowl in which the club was overmatched by Penn State. Aside from that, this team has been golden in these spots, and that win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish last year in the Champs Sports Bowl looks darn good at the moment, knowing that the Golden Domers haven’t lost since that point.

Northern Illinois is the trendy pick in this one, and there are some good reasons for that. The Florida State defensive line is all banged up, and that could be the key for QB Jordan Lynch to do the necessary damage to get the ball moving against the Noles. Remember that Lynch rushed for 1,771 yards and threw for 2,962 yards this year, though this is obviously the biggest challenge that he has faced this year. The Huskies dropped oodles of points on teams from the MAC, but the defense still gives us some cause for concern. Remember that this team allowed 19.0 points per game, but we really should discount games against teams like Massachusetts, Eastern Michigan, Akron, Buffalo, and Tennessee Martin. Just count games against bowl teams this year, and NIU allowed 27.0 points per game.

FSU’s defense hasn’t really been beaten up this year in any game that it shouldn’t have been, save for perhaps the game against the Florida Gators. If there is an answer for Lynch, this game will be a romp. The Noles will score against this defense as long as they want to be in this game. If they do, this will look a heck of a lot like the game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Hawaii Warriors a few years ago, and a heck of a lot less like the Boise State Broncos and the Oklahoma Sooners from the old Fiesta Bowl. Don’t be afraid to lay the lumber with the garnet and gold, as this game could ultimately get ugly.

Northern Illinois vs. Florida State Pick: Florida State Seminoles -13.5
Orange Bowl Score Prediction: Florida State 41 – Northern Illinois 17

Of all of the games on the Friday 11/30 college football betting schedule, one of my favorite is the clash between the Northern Illinois Huskies and the Kent State Golden Flashes. Join me for my Week 14 tips for this 7:00 p.m. ET kickoff that can be seen on ESPN2.

Northern Illinois Huskies (11-1, 9-2-1 ATS) -7.5
Kent State Golden Flashes (11-1, 10-2 ATS) +7.5
Over/Under 57.5

When I look at the 2012 MAC Championship Game odds, I really feel like the ‘total’ has incorrectly been moving down all week long. This is the time of year that games start flying past the number for seemingly no reason whatsoever, and this is probably going to be no exception.

For starters, I need to call out Kent State’s defense for the fraud that it is. The team has been okay by MAC standards, but the truth of the matter is that the squad had allowed at least 23 in five straight games before holding Ohio to just six points. Remember that this unit also gave up 21 to Towson and 47 to Kentucky, numbers which look awfully bad right now.

Northern Illinois’ defense? Probably also a sham, though a better unit for sure. I think that the 24 allowed to Toledo and the 34 allowed to Western Michigan is a lot more indicative of what I can expect to see on Friday, and not the seven to Eastern Michigan, the zip to UMass, the seven to Akron, and the three to Buffalo. Again, this unit gave up 40 to Army earlier this year. There really has never been a doubt about either of these offenses being great, and QB Jordan Lynch should be in for another one of those wacko days like he has where he puts up 150+ rushing yards and 200+ passing yards to go with four or five total scores. In the end, this game should get into the 60s.

The 2012 college football season is back, and here at Cappers Info, we’ll be looking at some of the best games on the docket each and every week, as we try to make the most money possible off of the CFB odds for the week. Join us on Friday night, as we make our Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Kent State Golden Flashes free picks and predictions for what should be a great clash on the gridiron.

Week 14 College Football Picks: Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Kent State Golden Flashes
Date: Friday, November 30th, 7:00 ET
Location: Ford Field, Detroit, MI
CFB Betting Odds: Northern Illinois -7.5
Northern Illinois vs. Kent State Live TV: ESPN2

Sometimes line movement just massively overreacts, and the truth of the matter is that this is where we’re at right now for the MAC Championship Game. Northern Illinois is the better of these two teams, and we’ll stand by that in spite of what the BCS rankings say at the moment. If the Golden Flashes end up in the BCS, they’re going to get absolutely obliterated by a team like Florida State, and it won’t even be remotely humorous to watch. However, the Flashes aren’t a 10-1 ATS team against FBS schools without reason this year. They don’t play the best defense in the MAC, but they don’t play the worst either, and if there is a unit that might be able to contain QB Jordan Lynch, this is the unit that can get the job done. We also really love this Kent State rushing attack, which features not just one, but two 1,000+ yard rushers, and that could control the ball and force the Huskies into some mistakes that we just don’t think they can overcome. Remember that NIU didn’t play one of the best defensive teams in the MAC this year, and every time it ran across some adversity, whether it be against Iowa, against Kansas, or against Toledo, games ended up being quite close. We think that the Flashes very well could be headed to the BCS as a result.

Northern Illinois vs. Kent State Pick: Kent State Golden Flashes +7.5
Northern Illinois vs. Kent State Score Prediction: Kent State 29 – Northern Illinois 28

Week 12 pointspreads are out, and here at Cappers Info, we are set to analyze the college football odds for one of the top games on the slate. The Toledo Rockets vs. Northern Illinois Huskies odds are posted, and we are set to make our CFB picks for another great game.

Week 12 College Football Picks: Toledo Rockets @ Northern Illinois Huskies
Date: Wednesday, November 14th, 9:00 ET
Location: Huskie Stadium, DeKalb, IL
CFB Betting Odds: Northern Illinois -10.5
Toledo vs. Northern Illinois Live TV: ESPN2

Last year when these two teams played, there were a whopping 123 points put on the board. These two teams know how to light it up, and it is clear that this is going to be a high scoring game once again if the Rockets can keep up. There might not be all that much of a way stop the QB Jordan Lynch, but in the end, there might not have to be. Toledo’s offense has been waiting to explode for the last several weeks, and it is clear that this could be the week that it happens. QB Terrance Owens has only thrown for 14 TDs against five picks this year, and though those numbers are okay, he is expected to do more on a regular basis. The big question is whether Northern Illinois is going to be able to take down RB David Fluellen, one of the best backs in the entire nation. Don’t be all that sure that this game isn’t ending in an upset when push comes to shove.

Toledo @ Northern Illinois Pick: Toledo Rockets +10.5
Toledo @ Northern Illinois Score Prediction: Toledo 42 – Northern Illinois 35

Of all of the games on the Wednesday 11/14 college football betting schedule, one of my favorite is the clash between the Toledo Rockets and the Northern Illinois Huskies. Join me for my Week 12 tips for this 9:00 p.m. ET kickoff that can be seen on ESPN2.

Toledo Rockets (8-2, 6-4 ATS) +10.5
Northern Illinois Huskies (9-1, 8-1-1 ATS) -10.5
Over/Under Off

Last week, Joe Public saw Toledo get beaten at home in upsetting fashion. The public also has seen Northern Illinois just absolutely mow right through opponent after opponent this year, but the truth of the matter is that it hasn’t seen all that much in the way of competition, save for a win over the Ball State Cardinals on October 6th.

This game just screams to be an upset to me. The Huskies have been covering the number against everyone that they have faced, but the numbers for QB Jordan Lynch are just overinflated. Don’t get me wrong, I love Lynch as a player, and I think that his game is great. He’s going to get plenty of yards and plenty of scores in this one, but he won’t light it up for 400 total yards of offense either.

The Rockets are going to be able to control the ball on the ground with RB David Fluellen, and they have a great history in this series. Last year, they were beaten 63-60 at the Glass Bowl as relatively heavy favorites, but they are still 8-4 ATS in the last 12 in this series since the turn of the millennium. I really expect to see an upset in this one, as Toledo flexes its muscles and proves that it is the better squad that has played the significantly better schedule over the course of the year.

Toledo @ Northern Illinois Tips: Toledo Rockets +10.5

There are only two bowl games this year outside of the BCS that pitted two 10+ win teams against one another. Few probably would have guessed that the GoDaddy.com Bowl odds would be battled between two teams that already have double digits worth of wins. We expect this one between the Arkansas State Red Wolves and the Northern Illinois Huskies to be a special game on the eve of the BCS National Championship.

If you haven’t seen these two quarterbacks take to the field this year, you really need to make sure that you don’t just turn off the television after the two NFL playoff games on Sunday. QB Ryan Aplin and QB Chandler Harnish are both all over the field and can do just about anything out there. Aplin is setting the stage for what should be a fantastic senior season next year under Gus Malzahn. He threw for 3,235 yards and 18 TDs, and he rushed for 605 yards and nine more scores. Harnish, a four year starter in DeKalb, finished up his senior season with 2,942 passing yards, a 26/5 TD/INT ratio, and 1,382 rushing yards and 11 scores. Needless to say, these are some big time yardage totals both through the air and on the ground, and we don’t think that there will be any different results this time around either.

These aren’t nearly the only key players in this game. The Red Wolves have a fantastic receiver in WR Dwayne Frampton, who caught 90 balls for 1,125 yards and six TDs. He and WRs Josh Jarboe and Taylor Stockemer are the subject of a tremendous quantity of passes, and they could all be in for big time games against the NIU secondary. Though the receivers aren’t quite as proficient for the Huskies, the boys on the ground definitely are. RBs Jasmin Hopkins and Akeem Daniels, along with QB Jordan Lynch combined for almost 1,500 yards this year on the ground, and they all averaged well over five yards per carry. It’s not just the quarterbacks that are putting up the well over 70 points and 900 yards per game that these two teams are averaging.

It’s not like these were that weak of schedules that these teams played this year. The Red Wolves played against a Sun Belt conference that clearly had its best season in league history. They ran the table in conference, going 8-0, and they also stuck with the Virginia Tech Hokies at Lane Stadium pretty much from start to finish and challenged the Illinois Fighting Illini as well in Champaign. The loss at the Kansas Jayhawks turned out to be a pretty bad one for NIU, and in fact, the 2-3 start to the team’s season was nothing to write home about. After that though, the squad went on a tear. This year, the Huskies scored at least 40 points nine times, and they finished up winning eight straight, including coming back from down 20-0 in the MAC Championship Game against the Ohio Bobcats to win the conference and move on to the final bowl game of the year before the BCS National Championship Game.

We just don’t see any way that these two offenses aren’t going to put on a show. These are two teams that we both circled as clubs that could have beaten some of the big boys from the big time conferences, but instead, they got pitted against either other. We see five TDs for both Aplin and Chandler in some form or another over the course of the 60s minutes, and maybe even beyond. Again we warn you, don’t miss this game. It might not be quite as good as the Alamo Bowl was between the Baylor Bears and Washington Huskies, but the potential is definitely there for some tremendous fireworks.

In the second bowl game of the year, the Humanitarian Bowl will kick it off on the Smurf Turf in Boise. The Fresno State Bulldogs are very familiar with this field, playing here every other season against the Boise State Broncos, but this will be a new location for the Northern Illinois Huskies, who have a lot of new things to try to break into before the end of the weekend. These two teams are knotted right down the middle in the eyes of the oddsmakers, but we have our college football picks for the game that can sort of which team should be favored.

Humanitarian Bowl Matchup: Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Fresno State Bulldogs
Date: Saturday, December 18th, 5:30 ET
Location: Bronco Stadium, Boise, ID
Humanitarian Bowl Line: Northern Illinois -1
Over/Under 58.5

Huskies Notes: The poor Huskies are going to have their work cut out for them just to get up the energy to play in this bowl game. This is clearly the less desirable location for the bowl, especially after losing the MAC Championship Game in stunning fashion to the Miami Redhawks. On top of that, right after the game, Head Coach Jerry Kill up and left the program, heading for the Minnesota Golden Gophers instead. That leaves linebackers coach Tom Matukewicz in charge until this one is over. The good news for NIU is that it really could still be classified as "on a roll," knowing that it had gone 8-0 SU and 7-0-1 ATS in conference play before the dud at Ford Field. This is clearly a team that is either a product of a weak MAC or is just that darn good. We tend to believe that the Huskies belong ranked in the Top 25 in the country, even with three losses. The defensive numbers definitely suggest that, as this team ranks No. 28 in the land overall at 328.2 yards per game and is No. 29 and No. 35 against the rush and pass respectively. No 'D' in this conference allowed fewer points per game than did NIU at 19.1, and the only team to score in the 30s against it all season long were the Toledo Rockets… who promptly gave up 65 points on that same night. Offensively, this is one of those teams in the land that is averaging over 200 rushing yards and 200 passing yards per game, and the end result is a tremendously balanced attack in which you never really know what's coming. QB Chandler Harnish should be putting on a real display in the Humanitarian Bowl. He threw for 2,230 yards and just five INTs this season, and he rushed for another 764 yards. The junior accounted for 25 TDs on the year. However, he would be nowhere without his top rusher, RB Chad Spann. Spann is clearly where this offense starts and finishes most of the time. He has toted the rock a whopping 243 times for 1,293 yards with 20 scores, making him one of the best scorers in the country.

Bulldogs Notes: The Bulldogs might not have the same type of offensive or defensive numbers that the Huskies do, but NIU also didn't play teams like the Boise State Broncos, Nevada Wolf Pack, and Hawaii Warriors either. The WAC was downright tough this year, and save those three games, there was no doubt that this was the best team amongst the rest in this conference. Fresno absolutely was a decided bowl bound team from the start, and unlike NIU, there is no doubt that it is going to love to be here in Boise with a chance to redeem itself from the beat down suffered on the Smurf Turf at the hands of the Broncos. The best news that Head Coach Pat Hill has to work with in this one is that his top runner, RB Robbie Rouse should be back in the fold after his injured ribs kept him out of the final two games of the regular season. There were just no runners that could do what Rouse did on a regular basis for the Bulldogs this year, as he rushed for 1,097 yards and ten scores, and he had a pair of 200+ yards performances in a row before getting hurt to boot. The play of QB Ryan Colburn has been okay, but not fantastic this year. Colburn threw for 2,529 yards and 21 TDs, numbers which are solid, but not amazing. His nine picks were acceptable, but at times, he really did look like a deer in headlights, especially against Boise State. The problem that the Dogs had this year was that they really didn't play very well against teams going to bowl games. There is only one win, a 25-23 'W' over the Illinois Fighting Illini, and the 'D' allowed at least 35 points in each of the other three games in the WAC. Still, that unit held teams to just 342.7 yards per game this year, and that number was right around 300 yards per game if you take out the biggies in the WAC.

The Final Word: We just love what Fresno State is bringing to the table here. The last time the Bulldogs played a team with a crazy offense like this on the ground, they nearly upset the Nevada Wolf Pack. This is just not a very good matchup for NIU, and its lack of heart and energy after getting everything sucked out of it over the course of the last two weeks or so is going to prove to be too much to overcome. Hill's team gets the job done and wraps up another solid season.

There was never much of a doubt this season that the Northern Illinois Huskies were going to be playing in the MAC Championship Game this December, but who their opponent would be was very much so up in the air. In a vicious three team battle that came down to the very last second of the very last game, the Miami Redhawks got the job done and are here in Motown ready to pull off what would be a shocking upset of a team that just finally cracked into the Top 25.

Matchup: Miami Redhawks vs. Northern Illinois Huskies
Date: Friday, December 3rd, 7:00 ET
Location: Ford Field, Detroit, MI
Game Line: Northern Illinois -18
Over/Under 54.5

Redhawks Notes: Things aren't going all that well for the Redhawks right now, as they know that they have a huge mountain to climb in this game. They did finish up the regular season with four straight wins both SU and ATS and took a year in which might not have ended in a bowl game and made it a guarantee. It's unfortunately that QB Zac Dysert won't be here to join in the celebration of winning the East Division of the MAC, as he has a ruptured spleen that will keep him out of the fold until the bowl game, only if it is played late in December or in January. Dysert threw for 2,406 yards and 13 TDs this year against a dozen INTs, and he was a tremendous asset to a team that went just 1-11 last year. Now, the ball belongs to QB Austin Boucher, who has thrown for 498 yards and has led the team to two wins in its final two games this year. RB Thomas Merriweather has come quite some way as well. The senior was thrown out of the first game of the year against the Florida Gators, and he fell out of favor for quite some time with his team. However, over the last three games, he has been the brightest star on the team. The Redhawks' back has rumbled for at least 80 yards in three straight, and at least 140 in his last two since Dysert has been out of the lineup. Merriweather has also scored in four consecutive games, and one would like to think that that number needs to reach five for the Redhawks to have a chance of pulling off this upset. Don't rest on this 'D' either. Miami has a defense that has allowed just 339.1 yards per game on the season, one of the best totals in the MAC and ranking No. 39 in the country.

Huskies Notes: Then there are the Huskies, who have not just been beating teams this year, but they have been beating them down as well. If not for a push against the Western Michigan Broncos, this would be a team with ten covers on the campaign, and ten straight at that. Since losing to the Illinois Fighting Illini in Champaign back in September, the Huskies have rolled off ten straight wins. The last three victories have come with at least 59 points hitting the scoreboard. Northern Illinois has outscored its foes by almost three full TDs this year. The 'O' ranks No. 17 in the country at 454.0 yards per game, while the 'D' is conceding just 18.5 points and 319.6 yards per game. All of those numbers are tops for teams in the MAC. QB Chandler Harnish has had a fantastic season this year, and he is taking care of the pigskin. Harnish has completed 66.0 percent of his passes for 1,949 yards with 17 scores and just five INTs. On the ground, there are few like RB Chad Spann in the country. Spann will absolutely earn a bunch of All-MAC honors for his 2010 campaign in which he rushed for 1,239 yards and a whopping 20 TDs. Over his last five games, Spann has rushed for at least 70 yards in all five and has scored a total of 12 times. Harnish has also added 761 yards on the ground for a team that is averaging just over 280 rushing yards per game. NIU has always been one of the better teams that this conference has to offer, but when push really came to shove over the last four seasons, QB Dan LeFevour and the Central Michigan Chippewas often ruled the day. Now's the time for the Huskies to shine.

The Final Word: Though NIU isn't going let that opportunity go, we still have to realize that this is a conference championship game between two teams that are awfully solid. No, the Redhawks aren't going to be the victorious team in this one, and it probably wouldn't have mattered whether Dysert played or not. The Huskies dumped the rest of the contenders in the MAC in the regular season, but they hasn't gotten their hands on Miami yet. The Redhawks will represent well, but come up short by a comfortable margin to give NIU the league title.

Matchup: Toledo Rockets @ Northern Illinois Huskies
Date: Tuesday, November 9th, 7:00 ET
Location: Huskie Stadium, Dekalb, Illinois
Game Line: Northern Illinois -11.5
Over/Under OTB

The MAC West champion will be decided for all intents and purposes Tuesday night when the 7-2 Northern Illinois Huskies take on the 6-3 Toledo Rockets. Both the Rockets and the Huskies are 5-0 in conference and both teams play sub-.500 teams in their last two games, so this game will virtually determine who will end up playing the MAC East winner on December 3rd at Ford Field in the MAC Title Game. Two Saturdays ago, Northern Illinois got a scare from a game Western Michigan team, but a Chandler Harnish touchdown pass to Willie Clark with four minutes to go was enough to give the Huskies a 28-21 win against the Broncos. Harnish had another solid game under center for Northern Illinois, completing 60% of his passes for 214 yards with two touchdowns and a pick while also running for 33 yards and a score. RB Chad Spann also contributed by carrying the ball 22 times for 146 yards and a touchdown on the day. Toledo had a much easier time in their last game, cruising to a 42-7 win over lowly Eastern Michigan. The win came at a big price for the Rockets though, as starting QB Austin Dantin will likely miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. True freshman QB Terrance Owens will get the start Tuesday night and showed some promise against the Eagles. Owens completed 10 of 15 passes for 234 yards and four touchdowns and completed three 50+ yard touchdowns in the victory.
