2013 Outback Bowl
South Carolina Gamecocks (10-2, 8-4 ATS) -4.5
Michigan Wolverines (8-4, 5-7 ATS) +4.5
Over/Under 47.5

There are only two words that you need to know about this game if you are a Michigan fan: Jadeveon. Clowney. The freshman defensive end is clearly a force to be reckoned with. He single handedly blew apart the Clemson Tigers this year, and he finished up the campaign with 13 total sacks. This is a man that literally does everything, and he has the speed to chase down QB Denard Robinson and QB Devin Gardner, both of which try to use their legs to get themselves out of all sorts of trouble. The truth of the matter is that the Michigan offense really hasn’t done much to impress me this year, as it has averaged just 13.3 points per game against teams ranked in the Top 25 in total defense this year. That just isn’t going to cut it to get this game to the ‘total’ in all likelihood.

It’s not like South Carolina’s offense has been all that impressive either. The team only put up 24 against the Wofford Terriers, and it really only put up 27 against the Clemson Tigers thanks to the fact that the defense had such a remarkable game that forced Clemson into a ton of terrible spots. This is an offense that ranks 66th in the country passing and 85th in rushing, and matters are made worse by the fact that RB Marcus Lattimore’s time with the Gamecocks is over thanks to the injuries and the fact that he is going to the NFL after this year is over with. QB Connor Shaw has the potential to be great, but like QB Stephen Garcia before him, he just isn’t living up to his potential. Shaw and the South Carolina QBs have combined this year for 24 TD passes against just nine picks, but combined, they don’t have 3,000 yards through the air.

It’s just not a pretty game in my eyes. Michigan did its job in the first half against the Buckeyes on the road, but it really just had nothing going in the second half of that one, which is why the game was ultimately lost. South Carolina isn’t going to do anything to overwhelm Big Blue, but in the end, it will do enough to get a victory and little more. Don’t be surprised if neither of these teams end up getting even in the 20s, let alone in the high-20s or 30s, and I think that it’ll take at least 28 South Carolina points to have a chance to beat us. I just don’t see it happening.

The Wolverines and the Gamecocks are going to be coming to the Outback Bowl this year, and this is a game that really could be a mismatch from the opening kickoff. Michigan has shown some promise this year, but this is also a team that was clocked by Nebraska in Lincoln, beaten in the Shoe by the Buckeyes, and challenged by the likes of Northwestern and Air Force. Not to mention the fact that the team was smashed by the Crimson Tide 41-14 in the opening game of the year. This isn’t a game that is quite that difficult, but it is a game with a similar feeling that is going to require this offense doing something special against a stout defense, something that it hasn’t been able to do all year long.

Head Coach Steve Spurrier has built up a juggernaut in the Gamecocks. They still haven’t quite made it to the BCS or the National Championship Game, but a 10-2 season this year really sent messages to the rest of the country that this team is once again going to be for real into the future as well. It’s just too bad that SC plays against the likes of the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs, or they would be prime contenders for all of the marbles year in and year out. Michigan is going to have to play well on defense, because as we have already seen in the past, DE Jadeveon Clowney has the ability to blow up an offense’s game plan all by himself. This offense for the Gamecocks though, is awfully suspect with RB Kenny Miles and RB Mike Davis carrying the load instead of RB Marcus Lattimore, and it is just as questionable with QB Connor Shaw calling the shots from behind center.

That being said, we think that this is going to ultimately look like a prototypical South Carolina game this year. Shaw won’t play all that well, but he’ll do enough to win the game by putting a few TDs on the board. That’s going to be more than enough to take care of a frustrated Michigan offense, which knows that it has a long road ahead to stop Clowney and the nation’s 12th ranked defense.

Last year at this time, Head Coach Mark Richt was answering a lot of questions as to why his team finished up the season at 6-7 and with the distinction of being the first SEC team to lose to a Conference USA team in the Liberty Bowl. Things only got worse when UGA lost its first two games of the season. Richt probably essentially had one foot in his Athens grave and the other on a banana peel at that point, but the Bulldogs came together and amassed one of their best seasons in team history. Sure, they came up short in the SEC Championship Game against the LSU Tigers, but there was nothing to be ashamed of in that one considering the fact that the Bayou Bengals are arguably the best team in the country. Besides, nothing takes away from those 10 straight wins that the Dawgs rolled off in the interim.

Michigan State had another touched season, as it won its share of games at the death, just like it did a season ago. This year, it was a Hail Mary pass against the Wisconsin Badgers with no time left on the clock that proved to be the magical moment of the year. Of course, Wisconsin got the last laugh by beating the Spartans in the second go around in the first ever Big Ten Championship Game, but this is a nice consolation prize. You don’t think of MSU as a team that has posted 10+ wins in back to back seasons, but instead, all you probably remember is that this is the same squad that was absolutely taken behind the shed in the Capital One Bowl a season ago.

The Spartans had some trouble against passing teams this year, and though Georgia is a relatively balanced bunch, it is also a team that got a team record 33 TDs from sophomore QB Aaron Murray. That being said, this is definitely not a slouching offense either. RBs Edwin Baker and Le’Veon Bell are both power backs that can tear through even the best of defenses. Remember that once the Tigers got going in the SEC Championship Game, virtually all of their backs had the ability to take down the Dawgs as well.

We’re a bit puzzled as to why the ‘total’ in this game is so low. We saw that the Michigan State defense wasn’t able to hold up to the powerful Alabama offense last year in the Capital One Bowl, and we have no reason to believe that it is going to be able to stop the Bulldogs either. Georgia’s defense has had some suspect games this year as well, notably allowing 42 to LSU, 28 to Vanderbilt, 45 to South Carolina, and 35 to Boise State. Unless all of a sudden, Richt’s defense figures out how to take down the Spartans, this one could end up featuring a slew of points when the Outback Bowl is said and done.

The great Head Coach Urban Meyer is set to step away from the Florida Gators this year after the conclusion of the Outback Bowl. However, standing in his way are going to be Head Coach Joe Paterno and the Penn State Nittany Lions, who are no strangers to the big upset against SEC teams in bowl games.

Outback Bowl Matchup: Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Florida Gators
Date: Saturday, January 1st, 1:00 ET
Location: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa Bay, FL
Outback Bowl Line: Florida -7
Over/Under 48

Nittany Lions Notes: This wasn't the prettiest season for the Nittany Lions, but Joe Pa knew that this was going to be a tough season now that QB Darryl Clark was gone. He elected to start for true freshman QB Robert Bolden, but after a tough offensive stretch to the year, he changed his mind and went to sophomore QB Matt McGloin. McGloin threw for 312 and 315 yards in his last two games of the regular season, and he accounted for 1,337 yards and 13 TDs in his handful of appearances. WR Derek Moye had a great third season here in Happy Valley, catching 48 passes for 806 yards and seven TDs, all of which were team highs. This is the final game in the illustrious career of RB Evan Royster, the school's top rusher of all-time. Royster wasn't the Heisman Trophy candidate that the Nittany Lions were hoping for this year, but he did throw for 916 yards and six TDs on the campaign. This defense only allowed 347.5 yards and 22.6 points per game this year, numbers which were great considering the fact that the Big Ten was so strong this year.

Gators Notes: After a pair of BCS National Championships and countless memorable seasons, it looks as though this is the end of the line for Coach Meyer, who will step away and leave the program under the direction of new Head Coach Will Muschamp in 2011. It's also the final game for Offensive Coordinator Steve Adazio, who is heading to the Temple Owls to be their head coach when this one is done with. QB John Brantley might be leaving as well, as he is a young man that just didn't work at this university. He's not QB Tim Tebow, and he isn't the man that he caused to transfer away from Gainesville either… some man name QB Cam Newton. Brantley threw for just 2,020 yards and nine scores on the season. He was a massive disappointment this year, just as RB Jeff Demps was. Demps has explosive speed, but he just doesn't look the same without Tebow in there handing him the ball. He rushed for just 531 yards in 2010. WR Chris Rainey was suspended for half of the season, and as a result, he really never put forth some great numbers either, rushing for 300 yards and catching 22 passes for 198 yards. The defense for UF was the key this year. When it held teams under 30 points, it went undefeated this season. Allowing 294.8 yards per game was great, but without DB Janoris Jenkins, a four year starter, playing is his last game as a senior, UF could be in some trouble.

The Final Word: The Gators seem to be the consensus pick here, but we're really not all that sure. They're not in great shape in this game with a slew of injuries, and the Nittany Lions do have some confidence having beaten the LSU Tigers last year in the Capital One Bowl on New Year's Day. McGloin has this Penn State offense moving, and if PSU can put just a few scores on the board, the 'D' might be able to lead the way to victory in a big upset.
