Now really isn’t the time to be putting your hard-earned money on the 76ers to succeed. The time will come when they get back on the horse we suppose, but this isn’t likely the matchup for all of that to happen. Philly has scored 87 points or fewer in three out of four games, and the one exception featured an easy-to-figure dud of a game for the Golden State Warriors here in the City of Brotherly Love. Boston meanwhile, continues to at least put up solid efforts, though we aren’t necessarily sure how it is doing it. This is a team that we love to back for its grit and tenacity. The talent really isn’t there, but the players on the court are buying into this potentially being the last hurrah for the team when push comes to shove, as both F Paul Pierce and C Kevin Garnett are certainly nearing the end of the road. Boston is just 10-17 ATS this year on the road, but it scored two out of three covers to end a tough West Coast swing at the end of February and is a well-rested team now. That’s good enough to give us the comfort level to back the C’s against a team that is a train wreck in the 76ers.

Head Coach Doug Collins came out and challenged his team following Tuesday night’s loss to the Orlando Magic. He said that his team lacked heart and character. At this point, that little tirade in the media could be construed two ways. Either the team could come out of the blocks here in the Windy City and fight its butt off to try to get one in the win column, or it could just sink to the bottom of the ocean in a season that truly has just been lost. We think that there is a tad more fight left in the Sixers at this point though, and we still love the style of basketball that they play. This is a team that could frustrate the heck out of a Chicago outfit that has mysteriously played poorly at home all year long. The Cleveland Cavaliers came to town two nights ago and scored an SU victory as nine-point pups in spite of the fact that G Kyrie Irving was out of the lineup. The underdog has covered three in a row in this series, while the home team has won five of the last six and four of those six from an ATS standpoint as well. We aren’t sure that Philadelphia is pulling off the upset, but we do think that it is at least going to give an inspired effort.

The Spurs have had their way in the past against the 76ers, winning and covering three games in a row. When these two teams met a few weeks ago back in the Lone Star State, the proceedings weren’t even remotely close. San Antonio walked away with a 109-86 victory. That being said, we’re not that sure that this domination is going to continue. The Sixers might have gotten over a massive hump a few nights ago versus the Toronto Raptors, winning 108-101 in overtime. San Antonio did win last year here at the Wells Fargo Center 100-90, but that broke a four-game coverless streak here in the City of Brotherly Love. For as great as the Spurs have been this year for NBA betting fans, they are just 13-10 ATS on the road for the campaign. They had dropped three in a row both SU and ATS before taking down the Atlanta Hawks at Phillips Arena on Saturday night, and we think that they are going to find themselves in a bit of trouble again in this one. This seems like a heck of a lot of points to be giving a solid Philly team that is badly underachieving at six-games below .500 this year.

The Pistons have covered two in a row in this series, and they already have a win here at the Wells Fargo Center this year. Detroit has allowed an average of 103.0 points per game over the course of the last three games, and against a team that is all about its defense, that isn’t a good thing by any stretch of the imagination. The 76ers have dropped three out of four, but they are going to be back at home against a foe that is relatively weak. The Pistons have just two wins away from home this year, and they have been a bit of a cluster of late, getting embarrassed by 15 by Dallas, 12 by Memphis, and 21 by the Knicks just in the last few weeks. We have a lot of confidence that this is payback time for the 76ers, who should get back to their winning ways by coming out and demolishing the team that beat them up here in this building a few weeks ago.

The 76ers have played some atrocious offensive basketball over the course of the last few nights, scoring just 88 points in both of their last two games. Boston was in pretty bad shape without G Rajon Rondo, but in the last four games in which he has started and finished, the team has put up 104, 116, 108, and 100 points. Though the Sixers have shown the potential for that type of output offensively, they just haven’t done it consistent enough for our liking. These two teams genuinely hate each other, and having the NBA schedule a back to back for them probably won’t help matters by the end of the day on Saturday. The only reason that we are going to go with Philly in this one though, is because of how poorly the C’s have played here in this building over the course of the last year. Remember that the C’s lost twice at this venue in the playoffs last year and once in the regular season as well. Tomorrow will be a better day for Boston, but this one will be lost.

Yes, we have seen the Hornets go 3-0 ATS and 2-1 SU over the course of the first three games of the year, but when they have allowed 90 points, they have lost. Philly is going to bring some major defense to town, and Head Coach Doug Collins isn’t going to be happy with the fact that his team has allowed 210 points over the course of two games to the New York Knicks thus far this year, and he is going to want this road trip to get off on the right foot. Look for the defense to really kick it into gear for the Sixers on Wednesday night, as they pull off a low scoring victory in the Bayou against the Hornets.

Dating back the last two years, which amounts to 10 games between these two clubs, the Knicks and Sixers have played eight ‘under’ contests. The ‘total’ is relatively low in this one, but we think with Amare Stoudemire still out of the fold for the Knickerbockers, it is a slam dunk that this one is going to stay with 185 or so. The Sixers just held a fast paced Denver team to 75 points, and it historically does a great job of limiting possessions and shots. The Knicks too, are preaching more defense this year, and that really showed when the Heat were held to just 84 points on 33-of-71 shooting on Friday night in the opener at Madison Square Garden. The matchup just isn’t there for both of these teams to succeed offensively, and it feels like both teams are going to be struggling. As long as neither team gives up all that many free points at the foul line, something that both have historically done well since Doug Collins and Mike Woodson respectively have taken over for the 76ers and Knicks, this should be a plodding game with both teams in the 80s when push comes to shove.

The Celtics and the 76ers have played a brutal series against one another, and there have been games that have been all over the board. The Celtics have won games via blowouts, the Sixers have won games via blowouts, both teams have had chances to win close games… there have been offensive battles and defensive battles. There has been pushing and shoving, and now even an appearance from Allen Iverson at Game 6. Of course, winning a Game 7 in Boston is a totally, totally different story. These Celtics have been here and done this a number of times over the course of their careers, and a lot of those times have come as this core of players for the most part. Meanwhile, the 76ers just don’t have that type of experience. Sure, Andre Iguodala and company figured out how to take down a crippled set of Chicago Bulls in a deep series, but in the end, this isn’t a Boston team that is crippled in any way, shape, or form. The Celtics are the better team, and just as Philly used its home court advantage to run away with Game 6, we think that Boston will use its home court advantage to do just that in Game 7 as well.

The Celtics did draw most recent blood, winning by 16 back at the TD Garden just two nights ago, but the Sixers really had looked like the better team for the majority (though not the entirety) of this series. That being said, we still don’t think that Philly is going to be able to get the job done in the end, but we do think that the combination of home court advantage and the do-or-die mentality that has to be ruling over the 76ers right now will rule the day. Look for Andre Iguodala and the crew to come up with one last shot in this series to send it back to Beantown for the coveted Game 7.

We’ve issued plenty of commentary on this before, and we are going to continue with it now as well. We just don’t think that the 76ers should rightfully be favorites over the Celtics at any point during this series. The boys in green just have the better squad. Sure, that doesn’t mean that Boston is going to win and/or cover every single game in this series, but we still think that it is better than a 60/40 proposition that the Celtics are going to win every game. And if that’s the case, we would be getting rich over the course of 100 plays if we just kept picking Boston. Tonight is no exception. Too much KG. Too much Rondo. Too much Pierce. Not even remotely close to enough out of the Philly starters, which were just badly outplayed when these teams met two nights ago.

We just still aren’t buying what the 76ers are selling, and we still believe that when push comes to shove, that Boston is the better play, even on the road in these games at the Wells Fargo Center. The Celtics looked particularly old down the stretch of Game 2, and the argument could be made that they are lucky to still be anywhere near in this series at this point. Still, the defense has done the job, and that is going to be the key to knocking off the 76ers. Boston still has Rajon Rondo, the triple-double machine, and the talent is there offensively to have so many different players take over. We just don’t see that out of the Sixers. If this game reaches the 170s, the Celtics are going to pull off the upset.
