#9 Wichita State Shockers +5
#8 Pittsburgh Panthers -5
Over/Under 119

Points are going to be at a premium in Salt Lake City on Thursday, and matters might really be made even worse by the fact that this is a very early start time for a game played in the Beehive State. The Panthers play big boy basketball from the Big East, and they are going to get in there and bang around in the block with their bigs. This is a team that allows just 55.4 points per game on the season, one of the best marks in the entire nation. Pittsburgh picked up a lot of help for this year by playing in last year’s CBI and ultimately winning the tournament. Now, the team knows what it is like to win these single elimination tournaments with a lot on the line. However, we have a bit of a concern about the Panthers in the way that they tried to close out the Big East Tournament quarterfinals against Syracuse. They just couldn’t figure out how to get a massive quality shot off when they really needed it. This isn’t a great foul shooting team either, which won’t help matters in a close game. The Shockers didn’t have a great season in the Valley, but they do have some decent scalps against teams like Iowa, VCU, and Creighton to their credit. It’s tough to beat this team by a lot of points; only Tennessee (9), Indiana State (13), and Creighton (12) in one of its three meetings have done it this year. That being said, we’re going to go with the upset and take the Shockers, though we wouldn’t be surprised if a close game goes the way of the Panthers as well.

Big East Tournament Quarterfinals Picks: Syracuse Orange vs. Pittsburgh Panthers

BetGuardian

Day 3 of the Big East Tournament kicks off on Thursday afternoon, and Pittsburgh takes to the court for the first time. The Panthers are laying 2.5-points, but we aren’t all that sure that that’s justifiable. The Panthers have had a great year, but we aren’t all that keen to their overall body of work at the moment. Sure, they have won four straight games, but they haven’t beaten one of the big boys in the Big East since February 2nd, which ironically came against this Syracuse outfit. Meanwhile, we’re wondering if the Orange haven’t found their way. They looked terrible in the first several minutes against the Seton Hall Pirates before turning on the jets in the second half and putting the game away without really all that much of a fight. It was a great game for F James Southerland, and a solid one as well for both G Brandon Triche and F CJ Fair. And to think… G Michael Carter-Williams and F Rakeem Christmas were guys that hardly had their names called during the game. This is a scary, scary Syracuse team, and we think that it is going to roll right along to the semifinals on Thursday afternoon at the expense of an overrated U-Pitt outfit.

Syracuse vs. Pittsburgh Pick: Syracuse Orange +2.5

There is going to be a massive score to settle for the Panthers in this one against Notre Dame. The way that these two teams played the first time around, a dominating 72-59 victory in favor of the Fighting Irish, U-Pitt clearly has to be ready for blood. The good news for the Panthers is that they have been playing a heck of a lot better basketball over the course of these last few weeks than the Irish have. Notre Dame is very lucky to not have 10 losses in a row under its belt, as it has been a long while since the team has really played the part of a Top 25 squad. Pittsburgh meanwhile, continues to be a dominating defensive team that can dominate on the glass. If F Jack Cooley ends up getting stuffed up on the glass by F Talib Zanna and the crew, this could be a long game for the Fighting Irish. As we see it, that’s exactly what is going to happen on Monday. Back the Panthers and lay the points on Monday night.

Notre Dame vs. Pittsburgh Pick: Pittsburgh Panthers -10.5
Notre Dame vs. Pittsburgh Prediction: Pittsburgh 61 – Notre Dame 50

Have the Golden Eagles been exposed? We tend to think that that has been the case. They really beat up on a lot of bad teams in the Big East thanks to a nice schedule to start off the conference campaign, but now, they are playing the meat and potatoes and are getting put through the mill for it. The team was beaten on the road by both the Georgetown Hoyas and the Louisville Cardinals over the course of the last two weeks, and now they get a particularly tough home game against a Pittsburgh team that really rebounds the basketball and plays defense well. The Panthers have won three in a row and have covered all but one game since January 22nd. They also have a score to settle in this series as well, having lost 74-67 in overtime when these two teams met up in the Steel City. This is a nice revenge spot for Pittsburgh, knowing that it has finally caught its stride for the first time in the last two seasons against a Marquette team that we just flat out don’t believe in.

Pittsburgh vs. Marquette Pick: Pittsburgh Panthers -2
Pittsburgh vs. Marquette Prediction: Pittsburgh 65 – Marquette 60

The Panthers are one of the hotter teams in the Big East right now. They had won four games in a row before tripping against the Louisville Cardinals in a tough loss at the KFC Yum! Arena on Monday. That being said, the next two are here at home against good teams, and winning these would be a huge accomplishment to lift the team back into the NCAA Tournament field for sure at the moment. Syracuse meanwhile, has had the whole week to stew over getting beaten by the Villanova Wildcats in the City of Brotherly Love. It’s going to be a tough road trip for sure, but we remember what happened the last time that the ‘Cuse were beaten in a game. They came out and absolutely rolled their next four foes by an average of 22.8 points per game, covering all of the spreads in that stretch. We do think that Pittsburgh has a good enough team to hang in this one, and perhaps even win the game. However, the battle tested Orange are clearly going to be the right side on Saturday afternoon to start what should be a great day of college hoops picks.

The oddsmakers seem to think that the Cardinals are going to get out of this funk at some point, but we just aren’t so sure when that is going to happen. Louisville has lost three straight games, and it just hasn’t quite looked like itself in any of these three. Matters would look different with another basket made against Syracuse or a better closing game against Georgetown, but in the end, there are bigger problems for the Cards. They’re getting outrebounded by every foe that they take on, and this is almost sure to be a foe where the same situation happens. If that turns out to be the case, it could be another long game for the men in red. Pittsburgh comes to town full of sound and fury, and it has won four straight games. The schedule hasn’t been the toughest for the Panthers this year, but they are finding ways to get through it all thanks to a legitimate 10-man rotation, every player of which will be on the court for at least a quarter of the game in all likelihood. Will Pittsburgh win this game? Maybe not. But will it cover the game? We absolutely think that this is a great spot to take the points in.

Pittsburgh vs. Louisville Pick: Pittsburgh Panthers +6

5Dimes SportsbookMy 2013 BBVA Compass Bowl picks between the Ole Miss Rebels and the Pittsburgh Panthers are all set and ready to go here at Cappers Info. The BBVA Compass Bowl kickoff starts at 1:00 p.m. ET at Legion Field in Birmingham, AL, and I’m going to be your expert college football handicapper that points you towards the winning bet for the Ole Miss vs. Pittsburgh game.

2013 BBVA Compass Bowl
Pittsburgh Panthers (6-6, 7-4-1 ATS) +3.5
Ole Miss Rebels (6-6, 9-3 ATS) -3.5
Over/Under 54

It’s interesting to think that all of the action has been on the ‘under’ in this game publically, as that’s generally a sign that offenses are being underrated. That makes matters especially unclear when the ‘total’ continues to rise. This is as sharp of an ‘over’ play as you’ll find in a bowl game, and I’m here to take the fullest advantage of it in a game that many think is going to be nothing but a snoozer that you’ll want to sleep through before getting ready for the NFL playoff games.

The Panthers aren’t as god awful of an offensive team as you would figure. The club did put up 400.4 yards per game and 27.4 points per game this year, and for as much as the team hates to be in Birmingham for the Compass Bowl for the third straight season, it does have to be out for some payback after scoring just six last year in this game against a significantly lesser SMU Mustangs outfit. Remember that the Panthers did score 26 on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, something that hardly anyone has been able to do this year, and there were 27 put up on both the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the South Florida Bulls to end the campaign. It’s not a hapless team by any stretch of the imagination.

5Dimes

But what really pushes this one past the number for me is the exuberance that the Rebels are going to be playing with. This isn’t your average 6-6 team this year. This is a team that went through the wars together and clearly improved against a brutally tough schedule as the campaign went on. QB Bo Wallace dropped 41 on the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 35 on the LSU Tigers, and 26 on the Vanderbilt Commodores down the stretch, and there is no reason to think that there won’t be at least 30 put up in this game, especially with as well as Wallace has played at the end of his sophomore season. It wasn’t a mistake this year that the Rebs scored 30.9 points per game, and this offense, against the tough SEC, did average 426.8 total yards per game. That’s enough for me to think that this is an ‘over’ game waiting to happen in spite of the perceived notion that the Panthers can’t score.

Compass Bowl Picks: Ole Miss Rebels vs. Pittsburgh Panthers

Location: Legion Field, Birmingham, AL
Compass Bowl Betting Odds: Ole Miss -3.5
Ole Miss vs. Pittsburgh Live TV Coverage: ESPN

Anywhere but Birmingham. That’s pretty much what the upperclassmen were saying for the Panthers a few weeks ago when they made it to bowl eligibility with a 6-6 season. This is going to be the third straight year that U-Pitt has made an appearance here at the BBVA Compass Bowl, and the truth of the matter is that it really has to be a disappointing sight. We all saw last year just how interested the Panthers really were when they were smacked around 28-6 by the SMU Mustangs in a game that was truly never even all that close, and we can’t help but wonder if the team would rather just be sitting at home for the rest of the year instead of having to get ready for this bowl game against a physical Ole Miss outfit.

Meanwhile, there is no doubt that Ole Miss has been chomping at the bit to get on the field in this game, just like SMU was last year at the BBVA Compass Bowl. The Rebs were one of the best ATS teams in the nation in 2012 at 9-3 ATS, and they were fortunate to win six games in spite of the fact that they scheduled the Texas Longhorns out of conference and had the SEC West to contend with this year. The celebration was outstanding when the team clinched a bowl bid in the Egg Bowl against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and QB Bo Wallace was the leader of the pack. Wallace really improved all year long, and though he is just a sophomore, he threw for 2,843 yards with 19 TDs. He averaged 335.7 yards and eight scores in his final three games of the year, all of which came against big time bowl teams from the SEC.

That really makes this one simple. Forget about the fact that it’s the Big East against the SEC, something that should be a mismatch all the time (except for you, Florida Gators!). Forget about the fact that Ole Miss is the de facto home team in this game. And forget about the fact that one of these teams played a significantly harder schedule and didn’t lose to Youngstown State to start off the season. The bottom line is that the Rebs want to be here, and the Panthers don’t.

Ole Miss vs. Pittsburgh Pick: Ole Miss Rebels -3.5
Compass Bowl Score Prediction: Ole Miss 31 – Pittsburgh 10

The time is here for more of our sparkling CBB picks, as we look at the schedule for basketball for Saturday night. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Pittsburgh Panthers will have it in a nationally televised game, which can be seen on the college basketball TV schedule on ESPN2.

Free College Hoops Picks: Pittsburgh Panthers @ Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Date: Saturday, January 5th, 11:00 ET
Location: Louis Brown Athletic Center, Piscataway, NJ
Pittsburgh vs. Rutgers Live TV: ESPN2

Head Coach Mike Rice is back on the bench for the Scarlet Knights, and he can’t be all that happy after seeing what he saw in the Big East opener against the Syracuse Orange when his team allowed the game to get busted wide open with a 24-0 run just few days ago. Now, Rutgers has to get back on the horse at home against a Pittsburgh team that has gotten out of the blocks in good shape this year. The Scarlet Knights are led by G Eli Carter and G Myles Mack, who are combining to average over 30 points per game this year. These are the two lethal scorers that you always have to watch out for in the rotation, though there are a total of nine men that all average over 13 minutes per game for the men in scarlet and white. Pittsburgh is a very experienced team that is shooting 51.3 percent from the floor this year, and that efficiency is making it one of the top teams in the country. The schedule wasn’t particularly strong at the outset of the year, but that doesn’t change the fact that C Talib Zanna and the crew are dominating. Sure that first Big East game of the year against the Cincinnati Bearcats was lost, but we don’t think that this one will be. Look for U-Pitt to get back on the right foot and score a victory on Saturday afternoon in Piscataway.

Week 14 pointspreads are out, and here at Cappers Info, we are set to analyze the college football odds for one of the top games on the slate. The Pittsburgh Panthers vs. South Florida Bulls odds are posted, and we are set to make our CFB picks for another great game.

Week 14 College Football Picks: Pittsburgh Panthers @ South Florida Bulls
Date: Saturday, December 1st, 7:00 ET
Location: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa Bay, FL
CFB Betting Odds: Pittsburgh -7
Pittsburgh vs. South Florida Live TV: ESPN2

The good news for the Bulls is that the season is going to be over with once this game is said and done with. It has been a disastrous campaign for the team, and the offense has just been nowhere to be found over the course of the last several weeks. The better news this week? Pittsburgh has found a way to muff games against so many teams that it should have never been beaten by. See: Youngstown State, Syracuse, and Connecticut. We think that the pressure is going to be building upon the Panthers on Saturday night as the game wears on, and though the Bulls aren’t going to be able to get to a bowl game this year, they’ll probably take some solace in the fact that they can keep Pittsburgh from going to a bowl game as well. We don’t know whether it will ultimately happen, but either way, asking the Panthers to lay a tuddy on the road is a heck of a task, even if the opponent has scored just a total of 32 points in the last three games.

Pittsburgh @ South Florida Pick: South Florida +7
Pittsburgh @ South Florida Score Prediction: South Florida 21 – Pittsburgh 20

November 24th, 2012 By Jack Wilshire

BovadaThe Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the Pittsburgh Panthers are set to kick off their college football clash on Saturday 11/24, and I’m set to make my college football pick for the affair at Heinz Field. Kickoff is set for 12:00 ET, and I’ve got the perfect NCAA football pick for this outstanding clash.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (9-1, 7-3 ATS) +1
Pittsburgh Panthers (4-6, 5-4-1 ATS) -1
Over/Under 43.5

The weather is going to be cold and harsh in the Steel City this weekend, and it’s perfect weather for the Panthers to get the job done against a Rutgers team that is in a very bad sandwich spot. The Scarlet Knights already know that a win next week against the Louisville Cardinals sends them to the Orange Bowl regardless of what happens this week. Especially off of last week’s win over the Cincinnati Bearcats, this is just a bad, bad spot.

And then there’s the case of the Panthers. Pittsburgh is a team that is a heck of a lot better than a 4-6 record suggests, and it knows if it wins this game that it should be able to ultimately make it to a bowl game this year. The Panthers have had eight straight games that have either been won or lost by 10 points or less.

The Panthers have won and covered two of the last three in this series, and the truth of the matter is that the oddsmakers have got this right and the public has it wrong. Over 65% of the bets have been on Rutgers, yet this line has come down from 2 to 1 or 1.5 in some outlets. It’s going to be a great day to be a Panther on Saturday afternoon.

Rutgers vs. Pittsburgh Tips: Pittsburgh Panthers -1

The time is here for more of our sparkling CBB picks, as we look at the schedule for basketball for Wednesday night. The Michigan Wolverines and Pittsburgh Panthers will have it in a nationally televised game, which can be seen on the college basketball TV schedule on ESPN2.

Free College Hoops Picks: Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Michigan Wolverines
Date: Wednesday, November 21st, 7:00 ET
Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
Pittsburgh vs. Michigan Live TV: ESPN2

The Panthers were pushed around a bit by the Oakland Golden Grizzlies a few nights ago, but it’s hard to blame them, knowing that they have the No. 4 team in the country waiting in the wings in this game. Pitt is a talented team for sure, especially with the likes of Tray Woodall and James Robinson can really step it up to help out Talib Zanna. The trio of Trey Burke, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Glenn Robinson III should be able to put up a lot of points, but we have to wonder whether Big Blue is really overrated as the fourth ranked team in the land. Don’t get us wrong, as we know that this is a great team that has some Final Four potential this year. However, we have already seen what has happened on the campaign to teams like the NC State Wolfpack who have been overhyped quite a bit, and that might be what happens in what might feel like a road game against the Panthers. Madison Square Garden is the Big East’s territory, and we wouldn’t be surprised if in the end, U-Pitt snares the upset to move to 5-0.

Pittsburgh vs. Michigan Pick: Pittsburgh Panthers +2.5
Pittsburgh vs. Michigan Prediction: Pittsburgh 64 – Michigan 59
