Is there really any reason to bet on the Trail Blazers for the rest of the season? We know that they are going to be a big underdog in this game, certainly by a double digit margin. Matters are really only getting worse, too. F LaMarcus Aldridge has an ankle injury, as does G Wesley Matthews. G Nolan Smith has a knee problem, while G Elliot Williams has an Achilles injury that will keep him out for the whole year. F Nicolas Batum has a shoulder injury that has kept him out of the course of the last several weeks. We have no reason to believe that any of these men will be playing on Tuesday. The Clippers are still fighting for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. It really isn’t going to matter if they are going to care enough to fight for it. The good news for the Clips is that they have won five games in a row, covering four of the five, and there really isn’t all that much of a reason to think that they aren’t going to be able to post a double-digit victory regardless of who ends up playing in the game. Even the reserves for Head Coach Vinny Del Negro should have no problems taking care of the Trail Blazers, especially here at Staples Center.

Is there really any hope for the Blazers right now? This is their final home game of the season, and we’re sure that they are going to want to send their fans out with a win over what might be the best team in the game, but can it really happen, even with the Thunder playing on no days rest? We just don’t see it happening. Portland gave up on this season back on March 24th when it was beaten and beaten badly by this Oklahoma City team 103-83. It was a game that was never really all that close, and it started a string of nine straight losses, eight of which ended with an ATS defeat as well. Even that one cover against the Utah Jazz though, came as a 10.5-point underdog. Portland put everything that it had into Wednesday night’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, and after watching G Kobe Bryant tear it apart for 47 points, all of which it felt like came in the last 15 minutes or so of the game, there is just no reprieve. There is just no justification for playing Portland right now, even if this line were 20. Oklahoma City flat out has to be the play.

Dallas was able to go on the road and knock off the Sacramento Kings on Friday night, and now, it is going to be finishing up this four-game road trip here at the Rose Garden. The Mavericks really need to get on their high horses if they are going to get into the playoffs, as they are three back of the Los Angeles Lakers with just six to play. There is no doubt that winning out is probably the only way to get into the playoffs at this point. The Trail Blazers clearly have given up on the season. They were destroyed by the Houston Rockets at home on Friday, and they have now dropped seven straight games, each of which have come by at least 10 points. In fact, of the last six spreads that weren’t covered, each ended up finishing up at least nine points away from the NBA betting lines. We aren’t ones to go against that trend. On top of everything else, the Mavericks are 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS in the games in this series this year, and they are one of the rare teams that have figured out how to come here to the Rose Garden and win games in the past. This should be another one of those victories on Sunday night.

The Trail Blazers really look like they have packed it in for the season. The team has dropped six games in a row, all of which have come by double digits. Only one of the last six games was covered, and that came by a hook against the Utah Jazz. The rest of those games? Not only have the Blazers failed to cover, but they have failed to cover by 10.5, 17.5, 11.5, 21.5, and nine points. F LaMarcus Aldridge has been sitting out the last few games, but he’ll be back in the fold tonight, which should help matters for a team that has truly looked awful. He and G Damian Lillard are all that Portland is bringing to the table with F Nicolas Batum likely out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. Meanwhile, Houston is playing well and it has a heck of a lot on the line. A playoff spot still isn’t quite a guarantee, though it is looking good. The Rockets won’t want to take any chances, and they will want to do what they can to run down the Golden State Warriors for the No. 6 seed in the conference. From a pure matchup perspective, we really don’t see how the Rockets won’t score at least 100 points in this one, and over the course of these last six, Portland has scored just an average of 91.2 points per game. The hosts will do a little better than that in this one, but not good enough to get a ‘W’.

Portland isn’t a team that we should be sleeping on at this point. The club is playing eight of its final 12 games of the year at home, and if it can win perhaps nine of the 12 games, there is a good chance to get into the second season. It all starts right now with a game against the Nets, a team that is in the midst of a long, long road trip that spans eight games and well over two weeks. Brooklyn is also a team that is really beaten up at the moment, as both F Gerald Wallace and G Joe Johnson have injuries that could keep them out of the fold on Wednesday. C Brook Lopez has been the centerpiece of this lineup over the course of the last few games, but he has a tough matchup here against a man that has arguably been even hotter in F LaMarcus Aldridge. Aldridge only just had his seven-game streak with at least 20 points snapped against the Oklahoma City Thunder. There’s little reason to think that Portland is going to lose this game. The Trail Blazers are 22-11 SU and 17-13-3 ATS this season here at the Rose Garden, and they should be able to take down a tired Brooklyn squad that is very mediocre on the road.

F Carmelo Anthony just has no energy in his leg, and he can’t get off of the court to take shots or defend all that comfortably. He shot just 3-of-12 against Denver on Wednesday, and that was a game that he should have been all sorts of amped up to play, knowing that it was the first time since he was traded from the Nuggets that he had the opportunity to come back to Denver. Portland has been playing well at home all season long, going 20-11 SU and 15-13-3 ATS. The Blazers did lose on Tuesday against the Memphis Grizzlies, but they got some points on the board, something that is really difficult to do against arguably the best defensive team in the league. Lay the points with Portland on Thursday night in a nationally televised clash.

Until we find out the status of F Danilo Gallinari, the NBA odds are going to stay off the board. Regardless as to whether Denver’s leading scorer is going to be on the court or not though, we still think that this is going to be a game that goes to the hosts. The Nuggets are obviously a tremendously worse road team (12-19 SU, 16-15 ATS) than a home team (24-3 SU, 18-9 ATS), and they have gone just 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS over the course of their last five road games. On top of that, the Blazers are still a tremendous home team (18-9 SU, 13-12-2 ATS) in spite of their overall record. They topped the Boston Celtics and have played two very strong games in a row against some of the top teams in the league. We think that G Damian Lillard is one of the best budding point guards in the league, and the top five scorers on this team are all superstars in their own right. It’s going to be tough to run with the Nuggets, but the truth of the matters is that the home team has always dominated in this series. Denver is just 1-5 ATS in its last six meetings here at the Rose Garden, and the home team is now 14-3 ATS in the last 17 meetings (not to mention 16-1 SU in those 17 games). Roll with Portland on Wednesday night.

This one is awfully simple, and it would be simple regardless of what the Heat were laying on the NBA odds (within reason). Miami is an awesome home team, and it has been ripping right through its competition, while Portland is a lousy road team that is 1-5 SU and ATS in its last six played away from the Rose Garden. The Blazers are going to be perfectly happy when they reach the All Star Break, knowing that at least they are going to get some time to regroup and hopefully make a push at the playoffs. More importantly though, is what happened up at the Rose Garden just a month ago. Miami lost 92-90, and it did so in a game in which G Dwyane Wade and F LeBron James combined to score 33 points. That’s basically what LeBron has been averaging over the course of his last five games, all of which he has scored at least 30 points to set a Miami team record. All it’s going to take is around 25 points out of LBJ and around 20 out of D-Wade, and this game should be about as good as over with. There’s no way that Portland is going to sneak up on this Miami outfit for a second time this year.

The makings seem to be there for a play on the Nuggets on Tuesday night. Denver is now 14-2 SU and 11-5 ATS at home this year, and it has rolled off five straight wins and covers in three of the five. Portland meanwhile, is just 8-11 ATS and 7-12 SU while playing on the road this year, and it clearly does its better work at the Rose Garden. Denver is a team that loves to run. Portland is a team that has virtually no bench whatsoever and essentially abuses its starters. Still, what we’re seeing with the Nuggets right now is that they are overrated. They didn’t cover against either the Orlando Magic or the Cleveland Cavaliers, and they needed a 37-18 fourth quarter to beat and cover the Golden State Warriors. They’re just going to be laying too many points in this one. This is still a very good Portland team that could get some great contributions out of F LaMarcus Aldridge and F Nicolas Batum, and if that turns out to be the case, this could be just another game where Denver wins by a handful of points, and it won’t be enough.

The second half of the TNT Doubleheader tonight is going to be a great game that we think is going to come right down to the wire. The Heat are headed out to the West Coast for the second time this year. The first trip, against a relatively tough schedule, resulted in a 3-2 record, but there the road trips weren’t as long as this one is going to be to get all the way up to the Rose Garden. We’re a bit puzzled by the activity in this game, knowing that 70% of the early betting as of Thursday morning has been on Miami -3.5 in spite of the fact that the Heat are just 7-7 SU and 5-9 ATS on the road. The team put up just 77 points two nights ago at the Indiana Pacers, and the thought that we are having is that perhaps this team isn’t as good as it was a year ago. Remember too, that the Trail Blazers have won three games in a row and five out of six, and they’re 4-2 ATS in their last six games. They’re 12-4 SU and 8-7-1 ATS at home this year, and they haven’t been beaten here at the Rose Garden since December 8th. That bad loss to the Sacramento Kings really seemed to turn this team around, knowing that the club has gone 11-3 SU and 8-6 ATS since that point. There’s no reason to think that that won’t continue tonight.

The time is now that the Blazers are officially overrated. They are going to be favored by just far too many points against the Suns on Saturday, knowing that they have rolled off four wins in a row and are 3-1 ATS in those outings. They took care of the solid Denver Nuggets on Thursday night in spite of the fact that F LaMarcus Aldridge didn’t play thanks to the 18 points and 18 boards for C JJ Hickson and the fact that G Wesley Matthews and F Nicolas Batum both reached at least 20 points. The Suns only have two road wins all season long in a span of 12 games, so we really can’t expect to see them win this game outright. However, we have seen this team playing better ball over the course of the last four games. They’ve all been at home, but they have resulted in four wins both SU and ATS. Watch for G Goran Dragic and the gang to come on the road to the Rose Garden and make this a game that comes right down to the wire.

They were beaten by the Utah Jazz last night in an ugly 99-96 loss, and we have to remember that they have played a heck of a lot of basketball over the course of just the last three days and have done a lot of traveling as well. The home team has won seven of the last nine in this series SU and is 6-3 ATS in those games. Portland might only be 5-4 SU at home this year, but that 99-80 loss to the Sacramento Kings a few nights ago really might have shaken up the club. Historically, the Rose Garden is a very tough place to come play ball, and the Spurs are going to find that out once again on Thursday night. It sounds hopeful that both G Wesley Matthews and F Nicolas Batum are going to be back in the lineup tonight for the Trail Blazers, and that’s only going to make the case that much stronger to go with the hosts over a weary San Antonio team that is clearly one of the most overrated teams from an ATS standpoint over the course of the last year and a half.
