5Dimes NCAA TournamentThere’s going to be a ton of drama at the First Four in Dayton on Tuesday night, and we think that this is going to be a great game between two teams that really deserved to get into the NCAA Tournament this year. The Blue Raiders have a chip on their shoulder, as they are out to prove that they are the next big thing in college basketball. We have seen Saint Mary’s in situations like this before, and we really haven’t been all that impressed. When G Matthew Dellavedova hits his shots from the outside, this is a tough team to beat. It’s easy to do against Portland and Santa Clara, but it’s a lot harder against some of the big boys. This is now absolutely a big boy that the Gaels are playing against. Middle Tennessee State had a Top 30 RPI for much of this year for a reason, and it is going to love this chance to avenge that loss that it suffered to Florida International in the Sun Belt Tournament. This is a team that is going to sub and sub frequently, and there are a ton of players for the Blue Raiders that have the opportunity to shoot the rock. For St. Mary’s, it’s really only Dellavedova at times. We’ll take our chances with MTSU in this one, as we trust a team that has won a whopping 55 games over the course of the last two seasons in one of its biggest games in school history.

And we meet again, old friend. The Bulldogs and the Gaels seem to face each other in the WCC Final every single season. It seems as though once a year, St. Mary’s is able to stop the Zags, something that has yet to happen this season. It had to wait until the WCC Final last year for the Gaels to get that elusive win that gave them the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, and we’re back here at the Orleans for another big time showdown of these rivals. That being said, save for a stretch right at the end of the game when these two played at the Kennel in January, Gonzaga has been the dominating team. The Bulldogs have turned on the jets when need be, and they really are the better of the two clubs on the court by a sizeable margin. Most are going to look at the game that G Matthew Dellavedova had against the San Diego Toreros in the semifinals and think that he is going to come up with a big time game against Gonzaga on Monday. He very well could, but we aren’t sold. We don’t think that 2-of-12 shooting performance was a shock. This is a man that has exerted a lot of energy over the course of the last four years to keep his Gaels in the NCAA Tournament picture. We like Gonzaga here to turn up the pressure once again on the Gaels, shut down them, and then lock up a top seed in the NCAA Tournament once and for all.

St. Mary’s vs. Gonzaga Pick: Gonzaga Bulldogs -4
WCC Final Prediction: Gonzaga 80 – St. Mary’s 68

The time is here for more of our sparkling CBB picks, as we look at the schedule for basketball for Saturday night. The St. Mary’s Gaels and Creighton Blue Jays will have it in a nationally televised game, which can be seen on the college basketball TV schedule on ESPN.

Free College Hoops Picks: Creighton Blue Jays @ St. Mary’s Gaels
Date: Saturday, February 23rd, 6:00 ET
Location: McKeon Pavilion, Moraga, CA
Creighton vs. St. Mary’s Live TV: ESPN

The Gaels are a fun team to watch, and if they get into the NCAA Tournament, they are going to be a dangerous team for some unsuspecting No. 6 or No. 7 seed to be facing. However, we think that they are going to have a real problem with some of the best teams in the land this year, and Creighton qualifies as one of those top teams. When you really look back at what the Gaels have accomplished, their best wins are probably on the road at BYU (which came thanks to a buzzer beater), a road win at Utah State, and a home win against BYU. There really isn’t anything else of note on the slate. A roadie at Santa Clara? Wee. Beating Harvard by a point? Not impressed. Creighton meanwhile, has taken down some great teams this season, including going on the road and beating teams like Illinois State and Cal comfortably. Neutral site sins against Arizona State and Wisconsin are looking better and better as well. F Doug McDermott is going to be the best player on the court in this one, which is odd to say in a St. Mary’s game, knowing that G Matthew Dellavedova is the man to usually watch out for. However, the Blue Jays aren’t going to come into this one afraid, and they are going to be able to pull off the mild upset in BracketBusters to further push the Gaels to the brink of the bubble.

Creighton vs. St. Mary’s Pick: Creighton Blue Jays +4.5
Creighton vs. St. Mary’s Prediction: Creighton 75 – St. Mary’s 69

CappersInfo is back with its BYU Cougars vs. St. Mary’s Gaels picks and predictions, as we look to give you all of the college basketball advice and tips that you need to beat your online sportsbook for this crucial Thursday night tilt.

Thursday night might be the most important night in the WCC all year long. BYU and St. Mary’s are consummate bubble teams, and both badly need a win over the other, knowing that neither has a shot at beating Gonzaga in all likelihood this year. The Zags were able to pummel the Gaels just last week, and these next two home games against the Cougs and the Creighton Blue Jays are likely must haves to get into the field. BYU isn’t playing BracketBusters this year, and that means that it is going to have to at least split these games against St. Mary’s and Gonzaga coming up to have a shot at getting in. It wouldn’t hurt to beat another of these teams in the WCC Tournament as well. The last time these two met, a buzzer beat gave St. Mary’s a narrow 70-69 escape from Provo. It’s not quite going to be payback time, as BYU has had a tough time on the road all year long, winning just a few games in conference play against the lesser teams in the league. However, this could be another close call. We think that there are going to be a heck of a lot of points in this one as well, and it is going to be one of these high scoring affairs that comes right down to the wire.

BYU vs. St. Mary’s Pick: Over 150
BYU vs. St. Mary’s Prediction: St. Mary’s 82 – BYU 78

Free College Hoops Picks: Gonzaga Bulldogs @ St. Mary’s Gaels

Gonzaga vs. St. Mary’s Live TV: ESPN2

If there is a game this year that the Zags are going to get tripped in conference play, this is the one where it is going to happen. St. Mary’s has a very underwhelming resume that doesn’t include a heck of a lot of great wins, and as history has always seemed to have it, the Gaels have to take at least one over the course of the year against Gonzaga to get into the dance. This is the best chance for that to happen for sure. St. Mary’s has the offense to get the job done against the Bulldogs, as it scored 78 points the first time around when these two teams met at the Kennel. The question is whether the defense is going to be able to keep down a Gonzaga offense that is clocking right now and is averaging 78.6 points per game. The San Diego Toreros were able to push the Bulldogs to the brink in their most recent road game, and we saw the Butler Bulldogs snare a huge win at Hinkle Fieldhouse back in the middle of January. The Zags can be had, and we wouldn’t be surprised if they are by G Matthew Dellavedova and the gang in the biggest bubble game of the season for the Gaels.

Gonzaga vs. St. Mary’s Pick: St. Mary’s Gaels +1
Gonzaga vs. St. Mary’s Prediction: St. Mary’s 79 – Gonzaga 74

The time is here for more of our sparkling CBB picks, as we look at the schedule for basketball for Thursday night. The Santa Clara Broncos and St. Mary’s Gaels will have it in a nationally televised game, which can be seen on the college basketball TV schedule on ESPN2.

Free College Hoops Picks: St. Mary’s Gaels @ Santa Clara Broncos

Location: Leavey Center, Santa Clara, CA
St. Mary’s vs. Santa Clara Live TV: ESPN2

This is a big one in the WCC, knowing that the Broncos are still trying to make this a race for the conference title and the Gaels are still trying to prove that they are worthy of being in the NCAA Tournament. A veteran St. Mary’s team knows what’s coming in this one, as this will not be an easy game. The club has been able to win gritty games like this one over and over again, and this should be no exception. The Broncos have a high flying team that has won 17 games this year and will at least think about contending for a spot in the dance as well. However, when push comes to shove and you really look at the resume that Santa Clara has put together, you can’t be impressed. The team was smacked against the BYU Cougars by 17 and 18 points in two games this year, and the Gonzaga Bulldogs blew the Broncos away as well. It’s just not a friendly spot to be in. Add into the mix the fact that Santa Clara is 5-17 ATS in its last 22 at home and St. Mary’s is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 on the road, and the makings are there for a short win for the visitors.

St. Mary’s vs. Santa Clara Pick: St. Mary’s Gaels -2
St. Mary’s vs. Santa Clara Prediction: St. Mary’s 83 – Santa Clara 76

St. Mary’s vs. Gonzaga Live TV: ESPN2

These night games in the Kennel are always tough, and they are made all the more interesting this year because of the fact that the Zags are such a great team this year. Gonzaga is led by F Kelly Olynyk, who literally has been unstoppable over the course of the last eight games or so. He put up 33 against the Santa Clara Broncos, and he adds to a team that already has plenty of other stars like F Elias Harris, G Kevin Pangos, and G Gary Bell Jr. This legitimately could be a Final Four team this year with the right draw in the bracket, and it wouldn’t be a shock to most in the country if that were to be the case. St. Mary’s though, knows what it takes to win here in Spokane. Granted, the teams from two and three years ago were better than this team is, but men like F Mitchell Young, G Jorden Page, G Stephen Holt, and G Matthew Dellavedova have been here for quite some time. The Gaels love to fly up and down the court, and they do so with ease at times. There is a heck of a lot of veteran leadership here in St. Mary’s, and we have a tough time thinking that this game is going to be a blowout. Take the points.

St. Mary’s vs. Gonzaga Pick: St. Mary’s Gaels +10
St. Mary’s vs. Gonzaga Prediction: Gonzaga 84 – St. Mary’s 80

Matchup: St. John's Red Storm @ Pittsburgh Panthers
Date: Saturday, February 19th, 12:00 ET
Location: Petersen Events Center, Pittsburgh, PA
Game Line: Pittsburgh -3.5
Over/Under 133

The Johnnies have had a history of slaying some real giants here at Madison Square Garden, and if they can pull this one off on Saturday afternoon, they'll surely be dancing regardless of what happens for the rest of the year. However, history really doesn't bode well in this one for the hosts. Pittsburgh has won and covered five in a row in this series. The two trips to MSG before that in 2005 and 2006 did end with St. John's upsets, but that doesn't mean that this is going to be the case again today. U-Pitt just doesn't have an immediate history of tripping up on the road, posting wins against the Villanova Wildcats and West Virginia Mountaineers there in recent weeks. Sure, St. John's now has two road wins after beating both the Cincinnati Bearcats and the Marquette Golden Eagles away from MSG over the course of the last few weeks, but that doesn't mean that Head Coach Steve Lavin's team is really ready for this challenge. You can bet that the Panthers have been watching intently as teams like the Duke Blue Devils and UConn Huskies have come in here and pulled off upsets. The oddsmakers are sure to not give us a break for backing the Red Storm, so we'll have no choice but to pull the trigger on the Panthers and hope that Brad Wanamaker can carry us to another victory since Ashton Gibbs is out of the lineup with an MCL sprain.

Matchup: Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ West Virginia Mountaineers
Date: Saturday, February 19th, 1:00 ET
Location: WVU Coliseum, Morgantown, WV
Game Line: West Virginia -4
Over/Under 130

Home teams have had a fantastic history in this series, winning seven straight outright and nine out of the last 10 meetings dating back to 2004. Notre Dame has had a bit of a history of falling flat in games like this one, getting dropped by the St. John's Red Storm and the Marquette Golden Eagles on the road. Of course, since that point, the Irish are 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS, and they are now in serious contention for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The 'Neers are coming off of a horrifying loss to the Syracuse Orange, their second straight road game in which they scored in the low 50s in points. However, one thing is for sure, and that's that Head Coach Bob Huggins isn't going to let Notre Dame drop three pointers all over the place on them, as demonstrated by last year's 53-51 win at Madison Square Garden in the Big East Tournament. WVU has a great team that matches up well with this Notre Dame squad, and the hosts badly need one more feather in their cap for the March Madness run. Don't be shocked if they get that feather on Saturday.

Free NCAA Basketball Picks: West Virginia Mountaineers

Matchup: Washington Huskies @ Arizona Wildcats
Date: Saturday, February 19th, 6:00 ET
Location: McKale Center, Tucson, AZ
Game Line: Arizona -2.5
Over/Under 157.5

If the Huskies are going to add a big time road win to their resume for the NCAA Tournament, this is where they're going to have to get it. Unfortunately, history really isn't on their side, as the home team is 6-2 ATS over the course of the last eight meetings, and the U of A will be a decided favorite on the college basketball odds. Washington was absolutely dreadful on the road on a trip that include a stop against the Washington State Cougars and two against the Oregon schools, going 0-3 SU and ATS even though it was a heavy favorite in all three games. Playing at home is just a different story. Arizona is playing significantly better ball right now, and it really should show up on the scoreboard on Saturday. The Cats would have no problem if they made it that they were the only Pac-10 team that got a bid to the NCAA Tournament, and if that happens to be the case, they could turn out to be a legitimate favorite to win the whole enchilada.

College Basketball Free Picks: Arizona Wildcats

Matchup: Utah State Aggies @ St. Mary's Gaels
Date: Saturday, February 19th, 9:00 ET
Location: McKeon Pavilion, Moraga, CA
Game Line: St. Mary's -4
Over/Under 136

Believe it or not, this BracketBusters showdown is the only battle of the entire day that pits a pair of teams ranked in the Top 25 against each other. The winner of this game is likely to keep their spot in the Top 25, though if the winner is St. Mary's, both might fall out. The Gaels have had a miserable week leading up to this point, as they were beaten down by the San Diego Toreros on Wednesday night in one of the biggest upsets of the entire season. This was a team that really should have been manhandled, and in the long run, if the Gaels don't end up making the NCAA Tournament, they can look back and shake their head at that loss as 17 point favorites to a team that won't finish with a Top 200 RPI ranking. Utah State suffered a similar loss two weeks ago against the Idaho Vandals, and this is their only chance to pick up an RPI Top 100 victory this entire season. They know that they aren't likely to get accepted to the dance in spite of the fact that they would have 27 wins under their belt without this win, and even then, the only sure route is going to be winning the WAC Tournament. This game means worlds more to Utah State than it does to St. Mary's, and we tend to believe that that will show on Saturday night. Will the Aggies pull off the upset? Probably not. But that doesn't mean they won't stick inside the number.

NCAA Basketball Free Picks: Utah State Aggies

Matchup: Texas A&M Aggies @ Oklahoma State Cowboys
Date: Saturday, February 19th, 9:00 ET
Location: Gallagher IBA Arena, Stillwater, OK
Game Line: Oklahoma State -2
Over/Under 127

It's a big, big day for the Pokes, as they really need this one to at least feel like they're on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble at the moment. They've dropped five of their last seven and seven of their last 10, but the good news is that the only home loss in this run has come to one of the best teams in the country, the Texas Longhorns. However, there's a point that we have to wonder whether this team is any good or not. After all, the Aggies slammed Okie State 71-48 back on January 12th in one of the worst beat downs of the season. The Cowboys were held to just 16-of-46 shooting from the field, and no one scored more than 11 points. The bench was kept incredibly quiet as well, so there were just no sparks that were able to fly. The scarier part about that win? Khris Middleton only had nine points and only took eight shots. Don't be surprised if the second verse goes the same as the first in this one, as the superior Aggies should be able to come into Stillwater and walk out victorious.

College Basketball Expert Picks: Texas A&M Aggies

March 8th, 2010 By Andrew Ryan

Teams that are already in the NCAA Tournament…

Cornell Big Red (27-4, Ivy League)
Winthrop Eagles (19-13, Big South)
Murray State Racers (30-4, Ohio Valley)
East Tennessee State Buccaneers (20-14, Atlantic Sun)

Teams that clinched automatic bids on Sunday…

Northern Iowa Panthers (28-4, Missouri Valley): The Panthers' win over Wichita State in the Missouri Valley Conference finale had bubble teams across the country breathing a sigh of relief. Had the Shockers won, an at-large spot surely would've evaporated, as UNI was already in the field of 65. Wichita State may still have a claim to the bubble, but this way, all of the at-large bids are still remaining. Watch out for this Northern Iowa team, though. It played fantastic defense through the MVC Tourney, holding all three foes under 60 points, including keeping the first two to just 40. Seeding the Panthers is going to be tough though. They went 28-4, but they'll probably only be a #6 or so.

Teams vying for automatic bids on Monday…

Fairfield Stags (22-9, Metro Atlantic): The Stags played second fiddle in the MAAC all season long, but that doesn't mean that they can't upset Siena and swipe a bid to the NCAA Tournament. F Anthony Johnson and G Derek Needham scored a combined 38 points in Fairfield's win over Niagara on Sunday. The Stags already know that they can play in the Times Union Center, as they only lost by a bucket at Siena on February 8th.

Siena Saints (26-6, Metro Atlantic): Here's another team that will be sitting firmly on the bubble should it not grab its conference crown. The Saints are a team led by a ton of veterans, all of which have been involved in first round upsets in the NCAA Tournament in each of the L/2 seasons. HC Fran McCaffery has what it takes to get this team into the dance and to let it do some damage when it gets there. Watch out for leading scorer F Alex Franklin, who has dropped 41 points in two games in this tourney.

William & Mary Tribe (22-9, Colonial): The Tribe had to be considered at-large bid contenders at one point, but now they know that they have to win this game, or it's off to the NIT. They've had two really close calls to get to this point, winning by a combined seven points in two CAA Tournament games, but at just 64.2 points per game allowed, this is a club that has what it takes to win a conference crown.

Old Dominion Monarchs (25-8, Colonial): ODU is almost certainly in the NCAA Tournament regardless of what goes on in this one, but much like the case was with Northern Iowa yesterday, you won't see this team want to slip up and lose its final tune-up before the real dance begins. Leading scorer F Gerald Lee dropped 26 points yesterday against VCU, but don't be surprised if he has weary legs on Monday. He and several of his teammates played 30+ minutes in a game that went to overtime just 24 hours before this one will tip off on Monday night.

St. Mary's Gaels (25-5, West Coast): Is the third time a charm? St. Mary's has already lost to Gonzaga twice this season, and the only way that it will absolutely be assured of a spot on the dance floor next week is to win this game. The Gaels have one of the most exciting offenses in college basketball at 79.4 points per game, but they've just be stymied time and time again by the Zags this season and in years past.

Gonzaga Bulldogs (26-5, West Coast): HC Mark Few's team knows that it's in fine shape regardless of the outcome of this one, but another WCC Championship sure would be nice. The Zags are also trying to show the Selection Committee that they really were the dominant team in this conference in spite of the fact that they suffered unsightly losses to San Francisco and Loyola-Marymount in the regular season.

Appalachian State Mountaineers (22-11, Southern): App State won the SoCon North Division and is rightfully playing for all the marbles on Monday night. The 'Neers have be dominant of late, posting three straight double-digit victories. G Donald Sims had posted five straight 20+ point performances and 25+ point efforts in four of his previous five before being held to just ten points against Charleston yesterday. He's averaging 20.4 PPG this year and will be a real force in the SoCon finale.

Wofford Terriers (25-8, Southern): The Terriers have also advanced to this point in the SoCon Tournament by recording two convincing double digit 'W's. Expect to see App State struggle offensively against a stout Wofford defense, which is holding foes to just 61.5 points per game this year. The Terriers will have their ears pinned back in this one, as its only home loss of the season came against these Mountaineers.
