#6 UCLA Bruins +3

Shame on the oddsmakers for simply getting this one wrong. Had G Jordan Adams been healthy, this UCLA team would be at least -2 or -3 in this game, and though we have no doubt that the impact of his injury is big for the Bruins, we don’t see it really being a six-point swing by any stretch of the imagination. The rotation that Head Coach Ben Howland brought to the table with Adams was deep, and though that depth is challenged at this point, it’s still a good enough team to make a nice run here in March. We trust that G Shabazz Muhammad can still carry the scoring load, while F Kyle Anderson can be a bit of a point forward on the court. G Larry Drew II is still one of the best distributing point guards in the game, and F Travis Wear and his brother, F David Wear are both good post contributors. What more could you ask for? Minnesota does have a talented team, and its 20-12 record wasn’t a great representation of how talented this team really is. However, the Golden Gophers lost their last three games of the season to Purdue, Nebraska, and Illinois. Do you want to lay three points with a team that just lost those three games in a row to end the regular season here in March Madness? We certainly don’t.

Pac-12 Tournament Final Picks: Oregon Ducks vs. UCLA Bruins

The Pac-12 Tournament has been intense, as there have been a few wild overtime games and some great finishes to see. Unfortunately, we really don’t think that the final is going to be a game for the ages. The Ducks have made a nice little run here over the course of the last few days, but we just don’t see how beating the Washington Huskies and the Utah Utes has prepared them for playing in this game. They have gotten by in spite of the fact that they really haven’t gotten all that much out of their starting point guard, G Dominic Artis, and they haven’t played a game against a team of this quality in quite some time. UCLA meanwhile, is battle-tested, having knocked the Arizona State Sun Devils off of the bubble and the Arizona Wildcats out in the semifinals. G Shabazz Muhammad and the gang are having a great tournament offensively, and all of a sudden, UCLA is ranked 28th in the land in total offense at 74.9 points per game. This is a team that we are building an affinity for, and we think that not only are the Bruins going to win this game, but we think that this could be the beginning of a nice run in the dance as well.

The time is here for more of our sparkling CBB picks, as we look at the schedule for basketball for Friday night. The UCLA Bruins and Arizona Wildcats will have it the Pac-12 Tournament Semifinals, which can be seen on the college basketball TV schedule on the Pac-12 Network.

Pac-12 Tournament Semifinals Picks: Arizona Wildcats vs. UCLA Bruins
Date: Friday, March 15th, 9:00 ET
Location: MGM Grand, Las Vegas, NV
Arizona vs. UCLA Live TV: Pac-12 Network

For the mass majority of the season, the Wildcats and the Bruins were the two best teams in the Pac-12. Neither had it easy on Thursday, as they were challenged by a pair of solid teams here in Sin City in the quarters. Arizona had the slightly easier route with a 79-69 win over the stingy Colorado Buffaloes, while UCLA had to fight back from down 15 points to take care of the Arizona State Sun Devils. It’s tough to beat a team three times in the same season, and UCLA is going to find that out on Friday night. The Wildcats are one of the most talented teams in the country, and they could be a horror to try to take out of March Madness starting next week. However, they really were terrible in two games against UCLA this season. The Bruins exerted a ton of energy to dispose of the Sun Devils, and part of the reason they were able to get the job done is because ASU had to expend so much energy the day before to beat Stanford. The tide will turn on Friday against UCLA, as Arizona marches on to the Pac-12 Final.

The time is here for more of our sparkling CBB picks, as we look at the schedule for basketball for Saturday night. The Washington Huskies and UCLA Bruins will have it in a nationally televised game, which can be seen on the college basketball TV schedule on CBS.

Free College Hoops Picks: UCLA Bruins @ Washington Huskies

Washington is one of these teams that really could get into the NCAA Tournament still from totally off of the radar. The team is 17-13 with an RPI of 85 and an SOS of 43, and there are some decent wins in the bunch. Win this one, and that would ride the winning streak up to four games and give the Selection Committee something to think about as long as U-Dub doesn’t totally flame out of the Pac-12 Tournament next week. G CJ Wilcox has slowed down a little bit over the course of the last few games, but he is still the man that can really take this team over when he needs to. We really like the Huskies in this one, knowing that the Bruins have to have the sense that they are already in the NCAA Tournament without any further struggles. They really looked like a disinterested team on the road against the Washington State Cougars earlier this week, and the history really isn’t all that great either. The Huskies have won five straight meetings here in Seattle, and though only three of those five have been covered, there is no doubt that they aren’t going to have to win the game by a slew of points to get the ‘W’ on the college basketball odds. U-Dub keeps its tourney hopes alive on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats and the Bruins meet up in the best game of the day in the Pac-12. Arizona has a lot to prove at this point, as it has lost three of its last six games and is just 2-5 ATS in its last seven overall. The Cats just aren’t really getting the job done offensively, averaging just 69.3 points per game in that stretch. There have been some good defensive games, but there was also that 89-point outing just a few nights ago against the USC Trojans to discuss. G Nick Johnson is averaging 11.4 points per game this year, but he is on a streak right now of seven out of eight games scoring nine points or fewer, and that isn’t going to cut it for the Cats. UCLA is the play on Saturday night to make. The team has won three straight and five out of six, and it is most certainly streaking towards the NCAA Tournament. This is the final game of the year at Pauley Pavilion, and quite likely the final home game for G Shabazz Muhammad, and he and his teammates are going to want to make that home court advantage stick. In a de facto pick ‘em game, we have to take the Bruins.

The Wildcats and the Bruins are both fantastic teams, and we wouldn’t be all that surprised to see either one in the Final Four when push came to shove this year. That being said, this is going to be a game where the hosts are getting just far too much respect. Arizona has been great this year on both sides of the court, ranking in the Top 70 in virtually every major category both offensively and defensively. The team has had its share of problems of late, though. Wins over San Diego State, Colorado, and Utah all came by the skins of the Wildcats’ teeth, and though the team did finish this three-game road trip by beating both Arizona State and Oregon State soundly, we still have our concerns. UCLA is probably the best team that the Cats have faced since beating San Diego State. The Bruins were rolling right along until they were stopped up by Oregon over the weekend in a bit of a surprising defeat at Pauley Pavilion. We think that the Bruins could be set to get back on track in this one, and we wouldn’t be shocked if there were an upset in the making.

The Bruins have won four in a row, while the Tigers have taken six straight coming into this game between a pair of teams that are hoping to go dancing this year. Head Coach Frank Haith has his Tigers flying all over the place this year, averaging 78.2 points per game. The real key though, has been on the glass for this club, as it is averaging 47.2 boards per game and is +19.4 rebounds per game over its foes. Both marks are No. 1 in the country. The addition of F Alex Oriakhi really has made the difference, as he is averaging 9.1 rebounds and 10.8 points per game. There are seven players averaging at least four rebounds per night as well. G Jabari Brown is back in the fold as well for the ‘Zou, and he is adding just another scoring threat to a team that is already sneakily good. UCLA is averaging 79.6 points per game this year though, and it has a team that can win this game outright. G Shabazz Muhammad has scored at least 21 points in three games in a row, while G Jordan Adams is averaging 18.2 points per game as well. G Larry Drew II is good for over eight assists per game to boot. This just feels like a UCLA team that is going to pull it together and pull off the upset as long as it doesn’t get crushed on the glass.

5Dimes SportsbookMy 2012 Holiday Bowl picks between the UCLA Bruins and the Baylor Bears are all set and ready to go here at Cappers Info. The Holiday Bowl kickoff starts at 9:45 p.m. ET at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA, and I’m going to be your expert college football handicapper that points you towards the winning bet for the UCLA vs. Baylor game.

2012 Holiday Bowl
Baylor Bears (7-5, 8-4 ATS) +3
UCLA Bruins (9-4, 8-5 ATS) -3
Over/Under 82.5

Holy total, Batman! I knew that this was going to be one of the highest scoring bowl games of the entire season, but to think that a number that opened at 77 has already risen by almost a touchdown to Arena Football type of numbers is a bit outrageous, even for a game with two teams in it that just seem to score at will all the time and get scored upon just as often. Still, I think that we are at the point of outrageousness, thinking that a game with a 42-38 score is still a field goal away from getting to the number in this one. There’s a good chance that you’re going to want to wait until the last second to put this play in, because this ‘total’ isn’t going anywhere but up from now through the 9:45 p.m. ET kickoff tonight.

Baylor’s defense has come up with at least a few palatable efforts of late. Since allowing 42 to Louisiana Monroe, 70 to Duke, 49 to TCU, and 56 to Texas, the defense hasn’t allowed more than 45 points in a game. The team has averaged conceding “just” 32.3 points per game, and the only game in the bunch that didn’t come against a bowl team was the 41-14 win over Kansas. The offense has been wildly inconsistent this year as well for the Bears, scoring 47 or more seven times but being held to just 21 twice as well. It is going to take a heck of a lot more than 21 to get to this number, which is the second highest number of the season behind the record-setting 88 that was listed on the college football odds on the final week of the regular season.

5Dimes

It has become a part of UCLA’s nature to play these high scoring games as well. Though six straight games have exceeded the ‘total’, including the last two games of the year against Stanford, none of those ‘totals’ were listed higher than 72. The only reason that 72 game against Arizona eclipsed the number is because of the fact that Arizona allowed 66 points. The Wildcats were held down to just 10. In the end, it would be fun to try to root for this one to feature 12 touchdowns, but it just doesn’t seem logical to think that that will be the way that it plays out. I’ve got to bet with my head and not my heart, and my head is telling me that this should be a game played comfortably into the high-60s or the low-70s and will still be classified as a wild shootout in spite of the fact that it will stay ‘under’ the number.

Holiday Bowl Picks: Baylor Bears vs. UCLA Bruins

Baylor vs. UCLA Live TV Coverage: ESPN

All of the betting action over the course of the last few weeks has come on the Bruins, and that is definitely something notable for a team that was once lined at +1.5 in this game and has flipped all the way to -3. There is no doubt that both of these teams are going to get some points on the board in a hurry, but we do have a bit of a concern as to whether the Bears are going to have success against a somewhat underrated UCLA defense. This unit did hold the Arizona Wildcats down to just 10 points and the Utah Utes to 14. The USC Trojans – albeit in a driving rainstorm – only scored 28, while the Stanford Cardinal in two games tallied a somewhat modest 62 total points.

Baylor has some major problems on the defensive side of the ball as well. This club allowed 56 to the Texas Longhorns, 49 to the TCU Horned Frogs, 42 to the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks, and 70 to the West Virginia Mountaineers, and that isn’t even the start of their issues. The Bears rank second to last in the nation in total defense at 513.9 yards per game and 117th out of 124 team in scoring at 38.2 points per game allowed. Granted, we are fully aware that this offense behind QB Nick Florence is averaging 578.8 yards and 44.1 points per game, ranking first and fifth respectively nationally. That being said, this is still going to be an uphill climb against a team that certainly is one of the better teams in the bowl season this year not in the BCS.

The Bruins have done a heck of a lot to improve over the course of the last two years. Head Coach Jim Mora Jr. came to LA and sat down both of his veteran quarterbacks in favor of freshman QB Brett Hundley, and the results have been outstanding. Now, instead of being an offense that really only went as far as RB Johnathan Franklin carried it, the team has some dynamic to it, and Hundley can get the job done both with his arm and his legs. Franklin though, did rush for 1,701 yards this year and has the ability to rumble for over 200 on this defense given the opportunity. We think that he will do just that in what amounts to be a victory for the two-time Pac-12 South champs on Thursday night.

Baylor vs. UCLA Pick: UCLA Bruins -3
Holiday Bowl Score Prediction: UCLA 49 – Baylor 31

November 30th, 2012 By Jack Wilshire

Making sports betting picks is one of my specialties, and today, I’m making my Friday Football Tipster pick based upon the football trends and Week 14 college football odds for the UCLA Bruins vs. Stanford Cardinal game on Friday, November 30th at 8:00 p.m. ET.

UCLA Bruins (9-3, 7-5 ATS) +8.5
Stanford Cardinal (10-2, 8-4 ATS) -8.5
Over/Under 44.5

The second meeting of two teams is generally one where there is a bit more offense played, knowing that the two teams have felt each other out. Of course, the argument that the oddsmakers are using is that the Stanford defense has now figured out QB Brett Hundley after really shutting he and the Bruins down in the second half of last week’s game, and that’s why this ‘total’ has come down almost a touchdown in spite of the fact that last week’s game eked ‘over’ the ‘total’.

It just doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever. Stanford has moved the ball quite a bit in these last four games under the direction of QB Kevin Hogan, and the club has averaged 26.3 points per game in its last three (we’ll take out the 48-0 win over a lowly Colorado outfit). Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, UCLA has been dropping points left and right on just about everyone. Hundley had a fantastic freshman campaign, and RB Johnathan Franklin remains as one of the best backs in the Pac-12 and the nation as a whole.

The Bruins have scored at least 36 points eight times this year, and in the other four games, it still scored at least 17. What the oddsmakers are telling us with this set of college football point spreads is that UCLA won’t get there this time around. That just seems absurd to me. Take the ‘over’, knowing that there should be at least 50 put up in this one for the second straight week.

UCLA @ Stanford Tips: Over 44.5

The UCLA Bruins and the Stanford Cardinal are going to square off in Week 14 of the college football betting campaign. Join us here at Cappers Info, as we make our predictions for football for what should be a great game on Friday.

Week 14 College Football Picks: UCLA Bruins @ Stanford Cardinal
Date: Friday, November 30th, 8:00 ET
Location: Stanford Stadium, Palo Alto, CA
CFB Betting Odds: Stanford -8.5
UCLA vs. Stanford Live TV: FOX

We rarely get the chance to see two teams play against each other over the course of the same season, and never before, have we seen two teams play within just six days in a major conference in such a big spot like this one. There are millions of dollars on the line here on “The Farm,” as the winner of the Pac-12 Championship Game will go to the Rose Bowl, while the loser will go to the Alamo Bowl in all likelihood. Though Stanford was the team that won this game last week on the road, we have to think that the Bruins are going to put forth a much more inspired effort. First off, they have to be tired of getting raked by this team, having been beaten by at least 18 in three straight battles and having gone 0-4 SU and ATS in the last four clashes overall. But more importantly, this is a game with some substance to it. Last week’s game was merely a decision as to whether the team was playing against the Cardinal or the Oregon Ducks. Go with a young and learning QB Brett Hundley to at least keep this one close. Don’t underestimate the value of the Bruins having played in this conference title game last year either.

UCLA @ Stanford Pick: UCLA Bruins +8.5
UCLA @ Stanford Score Prediction: Stanford 28 – UCLA 24

November 24th, 2012 By Jack Wilshire

Of all of the games on the Saturday 11/24 college football betting schedule, one of my favorite is the clash between the Stanford Cardinal and the UCLA Bruins. Join me for my Week 13 tips for this 6:30 p.m. ET kickoff that can be seen on FOX.

Stanford Cardinal (9-2, 7-4 ATS) -3
UCLA Bruins (9-2, 7-4 ATS) +3
Over/Under 52.5

It seems to be a bit ironic that the most important game out of the Pac-12 of the entire season isn’t a game involving either the Oregon Ducks or the USC Trojans. Instead, it’s a Stanford team that has everything on the line to get to the Rose Bowl going on the road against a UCLA team that has already shocked the world enough to win the Pac-12 South and establish perhaps a newly found level of dominance in the division.

Needless to say, there is a whole heck of a lot on the line in this one. Stanford is trying to keep its Rose Bowl hopes and BCS bowl hopes alive, two things that will only happen with a win in this game (or perhaps an Oregon loss). The Bruins know that they could still get a home game in the Pac-12 Championship Game if this one is won, and though it isn’t likely, they’re going to be playing their hearts out.

Here’s what I see in this college football matchup, though. I see a Stanford team that held Oregon to 14 points, held Cal to three, shut out Colorado, had Notre Dame down to just 13 in regulation, and kept USC to just 14. I see a UCLA team that held Arizona to 10, USC to a very respectable 28, and Utah to 14. And, I see a series that has had eight ‘under’ games since 2002 in 10 tries. As a result, I see a ‘total’ that probably should be in the 40s, not in the 50s.

Stanford @ UCLA Tips: Under 51.5
