The formula is frighteningly simple for the Jazz on Wednesday night. They need to win this game and hope that the Los Angeles Lakers end up losing later on in the evening to get into the second season. Of course, it probably isn’t going to make much of a difference, as the stay in the playoffs will likely be short, knowing that the Oklahoma City Thunder are probably going to slaughter whatever team they end up taking on in the first round of the second season. That being said, the Grizzlies have a lot on the line here as well. They have a chance to end up hosting the opening games of the playoffs this weekend with a win and some help as well. The Grizz are playing great ball right now, and they are coming off of a game against the Dallas Mavericks in the Lone Star State in which they ended up with a lot of contributions from their bench. As it is, Memphis is playing outstanding defense, and it is most certainly going to be a big factor in this game. The Jazz just don’t have the guards to come on the road and win this game in the clutch. There is a reason that two of these three games this season have been covered by the Grizzlies. The lone exception was a game a month ago in Salt Lake City. There’s just a huge difference between playing at home and going on the road in what will feel like a playoff game right at the end of the regular season. Lay the points with the hosts.

The Knicks are hurting in every sense of the word. They’ll probably be playing in this one without F Carmelo Anthony and C Tyson Chandler once again, and they’re playing in the second game of a back to back and the final game of a five-game road trip. This trip has been a categorical disaster, knowing that each game has ended in defeat of at least 13 points. Each game has gotten a little bit closer, but that’s definitely no consolation for a team that is now just a game up in the Atlantic Division. Utah is only two games above .500, and has had a horrid time playing against the Knicks in recent years. The last time it covered a game in this series at home was back in 2005, and it has failed to cover 10 straight and 17 out of 21 in this series. However, Utah is 20-12 ATS at home this season, and it shouldn’t be messed with in this one. The Jazz really are the right play in spite of the fact that they are laying double digits against a team that is probably still going to be a contender for the Eastern Conference crown if it can ever truly get healthy. Fortunately for Utah, the Knicks are anything but in good shape right now.

The Jazz are a pathetic road team by every account imaginable. They have won a grand total of one road game against teams this year that are better than 34-31 all season long, and this is as tough as a game is going to get. Utah could be playing without F Paul Millsap, who has a bruised knee, and it is going to be playing against a team that is coming off of a rare loss. The Thunder are going to need to get back on their horse right away against the Jazz, a potential playoff foe, and we expect that they are going to do it. Oklahoma City has covered eight straight games against teams with road winning percentages of .400 or fewer, and it is 3-1-1 ATS in the last five games in this series. Not surprisingly, the troubles that the team has had from an ATS standpoint against the Jazz have come on the road in the Beehive State, where Utah is a significantly better and more explosive team. Oklahoma City has been struggling offensively, and that’s the only thing that scares us just a bit laying so many points, but we know that this is a club that can turn on the jets and put up 120 against anyone in the league. That’s exactly what we think will happen tonight.

The Jazz and the Celtics are probably on just about level terms when you think about how evenly matched the teams are. Boston is probably the slightly less talented team, especially when you consider how deep the bench is for Utah. What’s really going to get the boys from Beantown in this one is the schedule. The C’s played last night against the Portland Trail Blazers, losing their third game in four tries on this West Coast swing. This is also the fifth (and fortunately, final) game played in seven days in five cities played a couple thousand miles away from home. Utah has more or less just been chilling, having played just two games since the All-Star Break, one of which was a home win against the Golden State Warriors and one of which was a road loss against the Los Angeles Clippers. The bigs for the Jazz can really be punishing in the paint, and there is no reason to think that that won’t be the case on Monday night. Boston had to be penciling this one in as a loss right when the schedule came out. The hosts won’t disappoint tonight.

Utah has one of the best home teams in the league at 19-5 SU this year, and it should be expected to take down another ‘W’ in this one. There is a score to settle for the Jazz, who have been blown away in their last two games against this Chicago outfit. Of course, both of those games came at the United Center, not here in the Beehive State, and that makes a huge difference. The Jazz are historically a terror to play against here at home, and that should be no exception on Friday night.

Can the Pacers really keep the tempo of this game down against the Jazz? That really wasn’t the case the first time these two teams met just before Christmas, as there were 188 points put on the board in what amounted to be a terrible shooting night for Utah. The defense for Indiana has allowed at least 95 points in three straight games, and the makings are there for this to be another one of those games. Utah’s offense has scored an average of 100.3 points per game over the course of its previous seven games before laying a dud last night at the Staples Center against the Los Angeles Lakers, and there is really no reason to think that the Jazz won’t put up at least 95 once again in this one. If that turns out to be the case, we have a tough time envisioning a way that this one doesn’t get to the number. Back to back games have exceeded the ‘total’ in this series dating back to last season, and we think that this is going to be another one of those games that gets into the 190s.

However, the trend that we are interested in is actually the ‘under’. Sure, when these two teams met earlier this year, the end result was 210 points on the board, but the fact of the matter is that both of these teams have been pouring in 45+ field goals on a regular basis, and that just can’t continue. Utah has shot 51.7 percent from the field over the course of its last two games, while San Antonio has shot 54.3 percent in its last three games. We’ll repeat: That just isn’t going to continue with regularity. Prior to this first game of this year, the previous five meetings, all in the playoffs last year, failed to reach the ‘total’, and we think that is a heck of a lot more indicative of what we should see this time around. Especially with the Jazz coming off that big time win over the Los Angeles Lakers, their offense should slide backwards just a bit.

Neither the Nuggets nor the Jazz have gotten off to the start of the year that they had envisioned, knowing that both are just 2-3 on the campaign. However, there is one easy stat that has to be looked at closely before we even try to analyze the NBA matchups in this one. The Jazz have yet to win a game on the road this year. The Nuggets have yet to lose a game at home. Looking back at the history of these two teams, it shouldn’t be all that surprising that the home team has won seven of the last 10 and has covered six of the last 10 as well. Al Jefferson has a stomach virus, and if he can’t give it a go in the high elevation of the Rockies, the Jazz are going to be short one fantastic post player against a team that just doesn’t have all that much bulk in the paint. Utah is just 3-7-1 ATS in its last 10 trips to Denver, and it just feels like the team is going to end up getting trumped in this one by a hungrier, faster team that can run it off the court.

The “heat” will definitely be on in South Beach on Thursday night between these two Sunshine State rivals. The Magic have clawed back to within 4.5 games of the lead in the Southeast Division, but when push comes to shove, this is the game that absolutely has to be won to keep the pressure on Miami. Dwight Howard is coming off of yet another fantastic game against the New York Knicks in which he scored 30 points and had 16 boards with five blocks. The key though, is the play of Jameer Nelson. Nelson might only be averaging 12.6 points per game this season, but he did go off for 26 against New York in a crucial role. Miami is coming off of a loss to said Knicks, but it is fairly clear that this is a team that isn’t going to be getting beaten all that often, especially on its home court. The Heat should be debuting Mike Bibby in this one, as he has been signed after he was bought out by the Washington Wizards earlier this week. Orlando really got crushed earlier this season in South Beach, getting knocked off 96-70 right at the start of the year. The Magic did end up scoring a big time win at the Amway Center in November, but the most recent meeting back at Mickey Mouse’s house resulted in a win for LeBron James and company. LBJ and Dwyane Wade really cannot be stopped in games like this, while Chris Bosh has always had a great career against Howard and company. Orlando might be 13-6-1 ATS in the last 20 meetings in this series, but the Heat are definitely the key to beating the NBA odds on Thursday. NBA Free Pick: Miami Heat -5

NBA Matchup: Denver Nuggets @ Utah Jazz

Both the Jazz and Nuggets made big time deals at the trade deadline, but neither one of these teams have their former superstars. Utah no longer has Deron Williams, while Denver is still trying to figure out how to live life without Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups. The thing about the Nuggs though, is that they really do have a deep team still with a ton of talent. In a 100-90 win over the Atlanta Hawks was really a great example of this. Wilson Chandler, Nene, Kenyon Martin, Raymond Felton, and JR Smith all put up at least 13 points, while three others had at least six points. Not bad for a team that didn’t really use Al Harrington all that much and still has yet to debut Timofey Mozgov. The Jazz really haven’t figured out how to get back in the saddle without Williams, most likely because the guard situation is really in bad shape without Williams. The team’s defense has totally gone down the drain over the course of these last two games, allowing 107 to the Boston Celtics and a whopping 120 to the Detroit Pistons. If this is going to be the situation in this one on Thursday night, the Jazz are going to be singing the blues. We’re really not all that sure that it’s justified, especially since there is still some payback for the Nuggets to pick up after losing 113-106 at home just a month ago.
