We really need to be realistic when we talk about this Wichita State/Louisville game. Most are going to be on the side of the Shockers, saying that this is a Final Four game, and all of the Final Four games turn out to be tight encounters. In the end, this is still a game between the Wichita State Shockers from the Missouri Valley Conference and the Louisville Cardinals from the Big East. Louisville is probably the best team in the country. Wichita State is certainly not one of the best 10 teams in America. The Cardinals have been beating Top 10 talent all season long. The Shockers barely held onto a game against one legitimate Top 10 team and beat another team that was perceived to be in the Top 10 in the land for the whole year that really never was anything more than a paper tiger. C Gorgui Dieng has no equal. Neither does G Russ Smith. Nor does G Peyton Siva. In fact, this is a total team of destiny at this point. The Cardinals are the real deal, and they are going to be the team to beat in this tournament the rest of the way. There is no way that we think Wichita State is going to be able to hang. The Cardinals have had all week to study up on the Missouri Valley reps, and Head Coach Rick Pitino’s team is going to be off and running right away to what should be a relatively easy win to romp into the NCAA Tournament Final.

Wichita State is arguably putting together one of the most memorable runs in NCAA Tournament history, and no one is talking about it. The Missouri Valley is a conference that you talk about until the Sweet 16, as there seems to be one team every year that threatens to get into the third full round of the tourney. However, by now, those teams are all seemingly gone. The Shockers are still here, but there are definitely some questions as to how long they’ll be dancing for. The truth of the matter is that they really haven’t certainly played one of the best teams in America yet. Sure, beating the Gonzaga Bulldogs was nice, but this is clearly a much greater challenge. Ohio State hasn’t been able to close out teams here in this tournament all that well. It had Iona dead in the water and at least let the Gaels think that they had a shot of getting back in it until the last five minutes or so of the game. Iowa State erased a double-digit deficit. Arizona had a big lead, blew it, then came back when Ohio State blew a big lead. That being said, we think that there has been no doubt whatsoever as to who the better team was in each of these games. There was at least a degree of doubt in each of the first two Wichita State games. Go with the Buckeyes and lay the points in what should be a romp for the Big Ten reps to get to the Final Four.

There’s something really special about what is going on in the City of Brotherly Love right now. The Explorers really hadn’t beaten much of anyone this year of any note, and this is another one of these chances to change that perception without having to play one of the massive teams in this tournament. La Salle is the only team that is already 3-0 coming into the Sweet 16 after getting here from the First Four in Dayton, and it has to be exploding with confidence as a result. The Explorers should be getting another great game out of G Ramon Galloway, who has averaged over 21 points per game since the start of this tourney. He’s averaging 17.4 points per game for the season now, and he is averaging nearly three triples per game. That type of production would go a long way towards getting the job done in this game. Though we know that Wichita State was hot against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday, we wonder if the magic is running out for the Missouri Valley reps. The team probably isn’t going to shoot 50.0 percent from beyond the arc like it did against Gonzaga, especially knowing that it only was a 33.4 percent three-point shooting team for the whole season prior to that point. The battle on the glass is going to be an important one as well, and if the Explorers are going to get beaten, here’s where it is going to come. Still, we have seen WSU really have some troubles on the glass early in this tournament, especially allowing 20 offensive boards to the Bulldogs. We think that there is a good chance that the Cinderella story from the First Four will once again get to the Elite Eight.

Will the real Gonzaga Bulldogs please stand up? It’s going to be tough to tell, even as this tournament proceeds as to whether or not the Zags truthfully belonged as a No. 1 seed or not in the NCAA Tournament. They sure as heck didn’t look like it against the Southern Jaguars on Thursday, as they were pushed right to the brink of elimination by a No. 16 seed, which was in a tied game with just a few minutes left to play. Of course, at this point, it’s all about survival, and Head Coach Mark Few and the gang clearly at least did that on Thursday. Wichita State played in a very physical game against the Pitt Panthers on Thursday as well, and we think that could really come back to hurt it when push comes to shove in this game. The Bulldogs are a bit of finesse than anything else, but they can bang with you on the inside and won’t be afraid to do so. We think that this is the end of the road for a gritty Wichita State team, but it won’t once again come without a real fight to the Zags. F Kelly Olynyk and F Elias Harris will play better ball in this one than they did against Southern, but it won’t be good enough to win this game by a full touchdown when push comes to shove. Take F Carl Hall, F Cleanthony Early, and the Shockers to stick inside of this number.

Points are going to be at a premium in Salt Lake City on Thursday, and matters might really be made even worse by the fact that this is a very early start time for a game played in the Beehive State. The Panthers play big boy basketball from the Big East, and they are going to get in there and bang around in the block with their bigs. This is a team that allows just 55.4 points per game on the season, one of the best marks in the entire nation. Pittsburgh picked up a lot of help for this year by playing in last year’s CBI and ultimately winning the tournament. Now, the team knows what it is like to win these single elimination tournaments with a lot on the line. However, we have a bit of a concern about the Panthers in the way that they tried to close out the Big East Tournament quarterfinals against Syracuse. They just couldn’t figure out how to get a massive quality shot off when they really needed it. This isn’t a great foul shooting team either, which won’t help matters in a close game. The Shockers didn’t have a great season in the Valley, but they do have some decent scalps against teams like Iowa, VCU, and Creighton to their credit. It’s tough to beat this team by a lot of points; only Tennessee (9), Indiana State (13), and Creighton (12) in one of its three meetings have done it this year. That being said, we’re going to go with the upset and take the Shockers, though we wouldn’t be surprised if a close game goes the way of the Panthers as well.

The Shockers and the Blue Jays were the two best teams in the Valley all season long, and it is appropriate that these are the clubs that are fighting it out for the league title. The home team won both of the meetings this year, and this is the rubber match in every sense of the word. Wichita State’s defense has been out of this world for the whole season, especially here in St. Louis, but if there is an offense that can get the job done, this is the one. F Doug McDermott is one of the best scorers in the nation, averaging over 23 points per game on the campaign. He scored 41 against Wichita State in the most recent meeting, but he could be kept under wraps in this one. If Creighton’s best scorer isn’t going to be able to get the job done, there is going to be no way to hold down the Shockers. This is going to be a game to watch for sure, as these two teams are amongst the best mid-majors in the land. Go with Wichita State to claim the Missouri Valley Conference crown and ensure that there is no bubble drama for either of these teams come Selection Sunday.

When the Shockers and the Blue Jays met back in the middle of January, it was Wichita State that probably needed a victory in a bad way. Now, Creighton is the team that is the club that badly needs the signature ‘W’. The Blue Jays did pick up a big win on the road at the Bradley Braves on Wednesday night, and the team now has three wins in four games after losing three straight. The Jays are probably in the NCAA Tournament right now, but this win would be the one that seals the deal. It’s a big game for Missouri Valley title as well, as the winner will capture the regular season conference crown and the No. 1 seed in next week’s MVC Tournament. Does it mean much to either side? In the grand scheme of things, probably not. However, we really like the fact that the Blue Jays came out with authority and smashed Bradley on Wednesday night. Now, all signs are clearly pointing to them finding a way to win the Missouri Valley by taking down the Shockers, who were incredibly disappointing in their home finale against Evansville.

It hasn’t been a good start to the season for the Vols, as they have really been beaten and beaten up thanks to a real lack of talent on the offensive side of the court. The team is averaging just 61.4 points per game this year, and save for F Jarnell Stokes and G Trae Golden, there isn’t another player on the team averaging double digits in scoring. F Jordan McRae has some potential, and F Kenny Hall at least chips in defensively, but the team is generally a wreck right now. Wichita State is playing stout defense, allowing just 58.8 points per game this year. The team is stacked, and it is going to be one of the favored side to win the Valley this year along with Creighton. Watch out for G Demetric Williams, who is knocking down 52.9 percent of his long range shots. Only F Cleanthony Early and F Carl Hall are averaging double digits in scoring, but the style that this team plays more than makes up for that. The problem that the Shockers have is that they really haven’t played a road game like this on the campaign. We think that the Vols are going to get their third win in a row at home to start the season with a stifling defensive effort.

Teams that clinched spots to the NCAA Tournament on Friday and Saturday…

Cornell Big Red (27-4, Ivy League) - The Big Red coasted to 13-1 in the Ivy League regular season, winning the only at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament that is handed out without a conference tournament. Cornell was once upon a time a Top-25 team for a few weeks, but it is going to probably be a #12 or #13 in March Madness.

Winthrop Eagles (19-13, Big South) - The Big South was supposed to belong to Coastal Carolina this year, but the Eagles had other ideas. They bounced the Chanticleers 64-53 behind a huge second half run to pull the upset as nine-point underdogs. Look for Winthrop to be hanging out as a #14 or #15 come Selection Sunday.

Murray State Racers (30-4, Ohio Valley) - A 17-1 record in conference play and three relatively easy wins in the OVC Tournament later, and Murray State is racing into the NCAA Tournament. It captured the Ohio Valley crown on Saturday with a 62-51 victory that more than sufficiently covered the four-point college basketball spread. The Racers could be a great potential bracket buster this year out of a #12 or #13 position.

East Tennessee State Buccaneers (20-14, Atlantic Sun) - The Bucs were only the #5 seed going into the A-Sun Tournament, but they took three tough wins in as many nights, taking out Campbell, Kennesaw State, and Mercer to win the conference crown. ETSU is a candidate for the play-in game, but in all likelihood, it will stick around for the weekend without the extra game as a #16.

Teams vying for automatic bids on Sunday…

Northern Iowa Panthers (27-4, Missouri Valley) - The Panthers are the only team in a conference final tomorrow that knows that it has nothing to worry about come Selection Sunday one way or the other. UNI's stifling defense has held its first two opponents in the Missouri Valley Tournament to just 40 points apiece. In order to win the Valley once again, the Panthers are going to need a great effort out of C Jordan Eglseder, who has scored ten points in each of his first two conference tourney games this year and averaged 12.2 points per game on the season.

Wichita State Shockers (25-8, Missouri Valley) - Could the Shockers be the in the field anyway as well? Twenty-five wins in a tough conference suggests that it is a possibility, but in all likelihood a win is needed in Sunday's Missouri Valley finale to get the job done. Wichita State has coasted to win against Missouri State and Illinois State, both of which were very tough foes, to reach this point. The Shockers have scored at least 73 points in three of their L/4 games, and they'll need to find a way to crack Northern Iowa's stout defense to take down the Valley title.

Vermont Catamounts (23-9, America East) - Vermont is no stranger to playing in the America East Final. It feels like the Catamounts have been in this spot every single year for the past decade. They've got comfortable victories against Binghamton and Maryland-Baltimore County in this tournament, and thanks to the upsets going on around them, they won't have to face either Stony Brook or Maine to reach the NCAA Tournament. Watch for F Marqus Blakely to have a great final on Sunday, as he is leading the team in scoring (17.4 PPG), assists (3.7 per game), and rebounding (9.2 RPG).

New Hampshire Wildcats (13-16, America East) - If you're wondering where the Wildcats came from, hop on the boat. After going just 11-16 in the regular season, New Hampshire was the only lower seed to advance out of the first round of the America East Tournament. Now, it is on the verge of becoming a sub-.500 team that is going dancing. The Cats may have had an awful offense for this whole season (61.6 PPG), but they have scored 68 and 77 points in their two conference tourney games, and a similar effort may be enough to lift the conference crown come Sunday night.

Just one week after ESPN's "Rivalry Week," the small schools take center stage in the annual "BracketBusters" festivities. Butler and Northern Iowa are both schools that are almost certainly going dancing regardless of what happens for the remainder of the season. However, for many of these teams, this weekend is their last chance to try to impress the Selection Committee in the event that they don't win their conference tournaments. Cappers Info has all you need to know about the teams that are trying to bust brackets this weekend!

Old Dominion Monarchs (20-7, 12-3 in Colonial Athletic)
Key Wins:  vs. William & Mary, vs. Charlotte, @ Georgetown
Key Losses: @ Virginia Commonwealth, @ George Mason
RPI: 33
SOS: 79

If the Monarchs don't capture the auto-bid from the CAA, they're probably in a heap of trouble. The Selection Committee realizes just how good this conference is, but it's hard to justify taking ODU without one more truly marquee win. Heading into UNI is probably the most difficult task that any team has to take on this weekend, but for Old Dominion, it is a test that it must embrace and not fear. The Monarchs already proved that they were good enough to win at Georgetown this year, and a victory against the Panthers would probably get the job done. They've won four straight and gone 3-1 ATS in their L/4 "BracketBuster" appearances, but none are more important than the one this Friday night.

Siena Saints (22-5, 15-1 in Metro Atlantic)
Key Wins: vs. Northeastern
Key Losses: @ Niagara, @ St. John's
RPI: 34
SOS: 123

The good news for the Saints is that they may be the biggest college basketball favorite on the board for a small conference tournament when they take on the rest of the MAAC in a few weeks. The bad news is that their resume, though littered with plenty of wins, doesn't really look like one of a tourney team. HC Fran McCaffery was begging for a battle with Butler or one of the other big schools this week, but he may have gotten more than he bargained for. With four returning starters from last season's Sweet 16 team, the Saints are sure to give the Bulldogs a run for their money in a game that they absolutely have to have in all likelihood to steal an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament if that's what it comes down to. Siena won last season's BracketBuster battle at home against Northern Iowa, but lost on the road against the Panthers earlier this season in the return battle.

Wichita State Shockers (21-6, 10-5 in Missouri Valley)
Key Wins: vs. Northern Iowa, vs. Texas Tech
Key Losses: @ Evansville, @ Drake, @ Creighton, @ Illinois State
RPI: 47
SOS: 120

Wichita State should be happy that it is going on the road for BracketBusters. As you can tell, there isn't a heck of a lot to this resume aside from some nice home wins. A victory at Utah State wouldn't be the most impressive thing in the world, but it would prove to the Selection Committee that the Shockers are capable of playing away from their home court. Right now, they may be the most intriguing side in the entire country, as the Valley's strong history in the dance will probably come into play come Selection Sunday. Still, WSU is going to have to play its way into the field one way or the other, and the far easier route will be a win on Saturday night against the Aggies.

Northeastern Huskies (17-9, 12-3 in Colonial Athletic)
Key Wins: vs. Utah State, vs. Kent State, vs. Old Dominion
Key Losses: vs. Drexel, @ Western Michigan, @ Drexel, vs. Providence, @ Boston
RPI: 62

One look at this resume, and you're probably thinking to yourself, "How the heck is this team on the bubble?" True, on one glance, the Huskies don't have a great gripe to be a March Madness pick next month. However, the Selection Committee has always asked the question, "What have you done for me lately?" That's where Northeastern thrives. It is 15-2 in its L/17 games, most of which have come against solid CAA foes. The Huskies can play their way into the field if they win out in the regular season and go all the way to the Colonial title game in all likelihood, but a tough test against the WAC's Louisiana Tech stands in their way. Not only does Northeastern have to be good enough to win, but it may have to be incredibly impressive on Saturday to help persuade the committee if it can't take care of business itself.
