</CENTER>
"You guys are great. This year is the best edition of your newsletter. I'll wait an extra day or two to get your material. Once I get it the rest of the week in my evening hours after my job is devoted to scanning through all you have written and computed like several times."

It is totally awesome.

FROM THE DESK OF MIKE EASTMAN

The NBA kicks off this week with a new dress code and the same meaningless regular season. The multi-millionaires will go through the motions until the second season begins in April when the ones that are left (most of them) get down to the real business of playing ball. Handicapping the pros is very much a matter of finding teams who are both motivated to play hard and capable of executing at a high level when they do. Teams that are well-coached will play with a higher level of intensity night in and night out. Perhaps most important, some of the younger, improving teams will likely “show up” most nights while attempting to gain a foothold among the league’s elite. Look for early season trends and jump on them.

The Redskins caused a whole lotta pain for many of our colleagues who put them on top of their tickets last week. The Gibbs crew was given out almost everywhere as a top play, 100 star play, NFC game of the year and LOCK. Most of the time, when one of these plays goes down, the capper can “spin” the stats and make a plausible claim that his side was “unlucky”. Sound familiar? Well, there was no way to spin the Skins performance Sunday! They got obliterated by an emotional Giants team who dedicated the game to Wellington Mara, their late beloved owner. As I live in the area I had a keen appreciation of the extremely high regard in which Mr. Mara was held by his team and decided to ignore the statistical setup that clearly favored Washington in favor of New York’s overwhelming emotional edge. Good call Mike! The question this week is whether the Giants can now travel to the west coast and play with any kind of intensity against the lowly 49ers and their 34th string quarterback. Very scary!

If anyone knows the name of Utah State’s field goal kicker please let me know. I’d like to thank him for carrying his team to that stirring 3-35 cover as plus 34!

Some interesting match ups in college football this week will find us fading some of our favorite coaches. It’s hard for me to believe but we will definitely be siding with Phil Fullmer and his Tennessee Vols against Charlie Weis’ VASTLY improved Fighting Irish. The Golden Domers would have been getting 7 or more if these two had met in week one and laying 9 or so against a solid SEC team that seems like an overadjustment. SEC teams, top to bottom, play the best defense in the country and we’ll be betting they will be able to slow down Weis’ magic show just enough for the cover.

The NFL remains treacherous. Our top plays romped (along with our top college play) but overall the week could have been better. A lot of games on this week’s card look “obvious” and this could be a big week for the “squares”. By the way, if your ticket this week looks like INDY, NEW YORK GIANTS, SAN DIEGO, PITT, WASHINGTON and SEATTLE you are probably a square! Nothing wrong with that, just thought you’d like to know!!

Have a great week everyone!
