As luck would have it the NFL held one of its” Square Festival “weekends at our expense as the favorites romped to the tune of 11-2-1 (hopefully you pushed or even won with the Raiders who lost the cover in unbelievable fashion). Our only regret is that we tried too hard to come with a “full card” of plays on a week we just didn’t see much out there. Going 0-2 on Philly (should have covered) and New England (shouldn’t have and didn’t!) wouldn’t have been great but would have represented our best assessment of the card. If we feel we have an edge we step in and put our money down but henceforth we are not going to force plays even if it means passing an entire card. Last week’s results mandate staying the course with a bunch of ugly looking dogs this Sunday as there appears to be a lot of line value in a number of games.
The colleges performed well although we were robbed of a very good day when Iowa blew a game they completely dominated at Northwestern in the final two minutes (oops, we are “spinning”!). We continue to do our best work in the SEC and ACC, seemingly the only two conferences where defense means more than something you put around your house to keep neighbors and animals out. Mike Lee’s “power dog” concept has performed quite well in these lower scoring conferences with the Miami Hurricanes blowout of Virginia Tech providing a classic example. Miami’s total domination of the Hokies at Blacksburg was extremely impressive…….if not for their early season slip-up vs. Florida State in a game they also dominated the Canes would be nose to nose with USC and Texas in the BCS standings (likely at least second given the quality of their opposition).
It is absolutely amazing to watch as Terrell Owens continues to turn himself into Dennis Rodman. A lot of credit to Coach Reid and the Eagles organization for deciding that enough is enough and putting the supremely talented receiver on the shelf for the rest of the season. It is not easy to do the right thing when there is so much pressure to win and so much that is overlooked on a day to day basis and in that context Reid’s action is even more laudable. Of course the players association will scream foul and the lawyers will all get involved but in the end one can only hope that this episode will mark the beginning of the end of the “Selfish Athlete Syndrome” that has become so prevalent in the sports world these days. I doubt it.
The NBA has gotten off to a good start from a wagering standpoint. One team that has really struggled out of the gate is the New York Knicks who are struggling to incorporate a number of new players into their mix AND adjust to the coaching of Larry Brown. Look for New York to become a strong “play-on” after they get their act together. Down in Miami Shaq’s early injury woes are certainly a source of concern as THE BIG GUY continues to show signs of breaking down. There appears to be a good deal of parity around the league and that may result in a higher quality of play as a lot of teams believe they are in the mix for a title shot.
With college basketball just around the corner, the NBA in full swing and both football seasons still going strong it’s probably a good time to remind everyone to play with some strict bankroll management, set aside separate bankrolls for each sport (college and pro) in order to maximize hot streaks and only play with money you can afford to lose.
Have a great week everyone!
