PHOENIX -5’ over LA Lakers

The only first-round series pushed to a 7th game will conclude Saturday night, as the Suns host the Lakers. Phoenix is attempting to make an unlikely comeback, as they trailed 3-1, but have stormed back with 2 wins to even the score, and host Los Angeles for the series finale.

The Suns are just barely alive, as Tim Thomas forced overtime in Game 6 by making a 3-pointer with 6.3 seconds left in regulation, and Boris Diaw and Shawn Marion each scored six points in the extra period.

For Phoenix to win, they will need another high-scoring effort similar to Thursday in which they shot 56.8 percent. Phoenix, which averaged an NBA-high 108.4 points in the regular season, has averaged 115.7 points on 50.4 percent shooting in its three wins. They will also get a boost with the return of Raja Bell, who served his one-game suspension for clotheslining Kobe Bryant in Game 5. Phoenix struggled Thursday trying to cover Bryant - who made 20 of 35 shots from the field - with Leandro Barbosa and Shawn Marion, though Marion did partially block Bryant's potential game-winning jumper as time expired in regulation.

While Bryant has shot 57.7 percent from the field in the last two games and averaged 39.5 points, he has not received much help from his teammates outside of Lamar Odom. Odom was one assist shy of a triple-double in Game 6 and is averaging 20 points, 10 rebounds and 4.7 assists in the series.

Phoenix has won 16 of its last 19 at home, and home teams are 75-17 all-time in Game 7s. “We feel like we're better at home,” Nash said. “Our team feels good with the opportunity to play for the series.”

The winner of the series will face the Clippers, co-tenants of Staples Center with the Lakers. The Laker-Clipper matchup that L.A. is craving has been pushed to the brink by a Phoenix team that has gotten hot, and a Laker team that has gotten sloppy.

The Suns are playing with a smile, while Los Angeles is playing as if their jaws are wired shut. It is a Phoenix team that now seems fated, while the Lakers just seem fragile. The Shaq-Kobe Lakers initially had trouble closing out playoff series. In their first nine tries to close out series, they lost eight times. These Lakers are clearly suffering the growing pains of those Lakers, as they already 0-2 SU & ATS in these playoffs in that scenario.

Steve Nash stated the obvious when he said he thinks the Suns have finally figured the Lakers out. Recent evidence certainly suggests they have. The Lakers took a 3-1 lead in the series with a balanced attack that surprised the Suns. But Luke Walton has become less of a factor, and Smush Parker has become almost a non-factor. Parker missed all five of his field goals, and is now 3 for 24 in his past three games.

Phoenix has now covered the spread in the last 3 games of this series and only appears to be getting stronger, while Los Angeles is fading. It’s unlikely that either trend will turn around here, especially considering the inexperience of the Lakers in big games such as these.

It’s only been a few years that the first round of playoffs was expanded to the best-of-7, but a fairly strong trend has already surfaced. Round 1 Game 7 home favorite of 4+ points are a perfect 4-0 SU & ATS, and the games have not been close. The hosts have won the game by an average of nearly 19 points, and beat the spread by more than 13 points a game on average.

L.A. couldn’t put Phoenix away when they had the chance, and now a very motivated and confident Suns team will take pleasure in burning Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: PHOENIX 108 LA LAKERS 99

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: PHOENIX 121 LA LAKERS 90
