Took a couple of tough losses recently. Anybody notice all the home teams lost last night? Looking to get back on track with these...
(NHL) Vancouver @ Columbus
2* Vancouver -150
The Nucks have looked sharp so far this season, scoring 7 and allowing just 1 in their first two games combined. The scoring is especially impressive considering just 1 of those goals came from the Bertuzzi-Morrison-Naslund line. Who says they have no depth? The Nucks tallied just 11 losses on the road last year, best in the NHL, and shouldn't be threatened by Columbus, who they've always handled well. Vancouver is 8-2-2 all-time against the Jackets, with a 3.92 GFA in those 12 games. They actually score even better (4.25 GFA) against Marc Denis, tonight's starting goalie. The last time Cloutier met Denis, the Nucks won 7-2. Columbus opened this season with a loss to Atlanta, and then was fortunate to catch the Rangers in the vulnerable back-to-back road game spot. However, the Jackets haven't strung two wins together in forever, and while the Rangers probably won't threaten anyone this year, Vancouver is for real.
(NHL) Florida @ Carolina
2* Under 4.5 +110
Two of the Eastern Conferences worst meet, with Carolina seeking revenge from the season-opening 3-1 loss in Florida. Don't read too much into that, as Carolina is perpetually seeking revenge from everyone. How does 0-11-2 in their last 13 games overall sound? Probably almost as bad as 6-32-5 in their last 43 games. Not suprisingly, Carolina was the worst team in the NHL last year. Their 171 goals were the fewest scored by any team, with Florida coming in second-worst with 176. Carolina has also struggled on the power play, with no goals in their last 34 PP chances. Florida has yet to notch one this year, and has just 1 in their last 18 tries. Luckily, these two teams are backed up by solid goaltenders. Weekes (2.55 GAA, and .912 SP last year) and Luongo (2.71, .918) are both confirmed for tonight's game. These two can take a lot of shots, and usually do, but still get the job done. Obviously, not much can be said for either team's offense, and no matter how you slice it, the trends favor the under. The under is 16-2-1 in Luongo's last 19 starts for Florida. The under is 8-1-0 in Florida's last 9 road games. The under is 10-1-0 in their first road game after two at home. The under is 17-4-0 when Florida scored 3 or less in their previous game. The under is 15-5 in Weeke's last 20 starts for Carolina. The under is 13-5-1 in Carolina's last 19 at home. The under is 10-2-5 in the last 17 meetings, and 3-0-2 in the last 5. This game will cure insomnia.
