Manzi becomes third harness driver with 10,000 wins
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FREEHOLD, New Jersey (Ticker) - Catello Manzi on Wednesday became the third driver in harness racing history to win 10,000 races when he guided Series Sweep to victory in the 11th race at Freehold Raceway.
Already a member of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame, Manzi joined Herve Filion (15,005) and Walter Case (11,027) as the only drivers to reach the milestone.
"I'm proud to have accomplished it," the 53-year-old Manzi said. "Some great things have happened to me during my career. I was elected to the Hall of Fame, I won 10,000 races - things that I never expected would happen."
Manzi began his career in 1968 at Monticello Raceway and recorded his first win a year later at Pocono Downs with Mike's Jimmy Lynn. He has been the leading driver at Freehold a record 15 times.
"I didn't just get here all by myself," Manzi said. "A big reason is the hard work of others - trainers, grooms, owners. I've had literally hundreds of people help me over the years and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them."
