Again, I have to tout my great NFL run as this is one of my best seasons....
Well....my NFC Championship Pick may be a little biased, but I AM INDEED hitting over 60% winners with over 125 plays this year (Note: I teased the 49ers & Pats a lot this year). However, I am going give my thoughts on the game anyway and perhaps my opinions (and picks) will be worth something. Perhaps I'll even convince a few Niner doubters.
All I have been hearing all season is what San Francisco "can't do", who they "can't beat", and who they "won't be able to stop". But, this team has proved everyone wrong thus far. And, if your planning on betting the Giants on Sunday, you probably still aren't convinced....I'm not sure why (other then the fact that you haven't seen this team play week in and week out or you're just a Giants fan).. But let me tell you what I saw, what I've been hearing, and what I see coming....from a 49ers fan that has watched every single 49er football play this year (as well as several Giants games).
Here's what I SAW (last week)
In the Niners/Saints game;
First, I didn't see a whole lot that I didn't see all season long (especially from the 49ers). I saw the most physical defense in football continue to hit people in the mouth and force turnovers. I saw Alex Smith and the 49ers offense taking care of the ball and scoring points when needed; and yes, whether it be a Field Goal or a Touchdown (points are points). I also saw Alex Smith make his 6th (yes, 6th) game-winning drive this season. I saw the the most disciplined and best tackling special teams unit in the NFL doing their thing once again. I saw the 49ers Defense completely shutting down Drew Brees and high-powered Saints for at least half of their opportunities and possessions. I saw two Superbowl contending teams (doing what they do) and just going at it. I saw the most complete team in the NFL (49ers) playing gainst, and BEATING, what would be the Superbowl favorite had the Saints had won that game (NO QUESTION). While we're on the subject of the very talented Saints (who lost to the complete 49ers), lets go back remember what the Saints did to the Giants when those two teams played; It was 49-24 drubbing.
In the Packers/Giants game;
In the Giants game, I saw a WHOLE LOT that I have NOT seen all year (from both teams). I saw a Giants team playing a lot better then they have all season long . But, I saw the Packers receivers dropping balls as well as a poorly executed game plan where the Packers were under-prepared and under-motivated. I also saw lucky Hail Mary play working before half. I also saw the Packers sorry ass defense finally catching up with them (Rogers is constantly bailing that D out). I think this win over the Packers is the main reason that I hear at least 60% of the public backing the Giants (hence the line moving down to 2 and perhaps 1.5).
Here's a few things I've been hearing (that I don't see at all).....
No Turnovers? (Why Not?)
I heard a few Giants backers say, "Eli Manning and the Giants aren't going to turn the ball over like Drew Brees and the Saints did. They're not going to give the Niners that many opportunities." ummm....why not? Maybe not 5 turnovers; but some? sure! Give me one good reason why the Niners aren't going to force Eli into throwing at least 1 or 2 picks and/or causing a fumble or two (or knocking some one out like they did to seven other running backs this year)? The Niners force turnovers and they've been forcing turnovers all season along (+33 Turnover Margin: that's an average of a 2 to 0 in turnovers in all 17 of the games they've played). The best defenses create turnovers. They forced Eli Manning into throwing two interceptions in the first game they played. Give me a good reason why they won't do it again besides then a hyped up media excuse about Giants injuries?
As for the injuries...."Well, the Giants Were Missing Players in the First Match-up"
The reason I say besides the injuries (and called it an "excuse" above) is because that's exactly what it is. Has anyone actually used the "we were missing players" excuse on you where you agreed (other then in the case of Payton Manning). Injured players that aren't playing don't tell me anything at all. Really what does it tell you? How does anyone know how that first matchup would have went without injuries for BOTH teams. Yes, I say both teams because the Niners had some key injuries in the first matchup (ummm...Yea, thats right...Frank Gore didn't even play...he rean for 4-5 carries and decided he couldn't go). They also had major players out ain the Saints game; including Delanie Walker, who will be playing Sunday (if you've watched the Niners, you know how good Walker is). All that I'm saying here is this; Players NOT playing (in a previous matchup) don't give us any information to go on or any data to support a theory (or a prediction). If Frank Gore had played, he might had busted loose for three 40 yard runs and the Niners win by 20. Who knows....
"Alex Smith won't play as well. He will come down to earth (especially with the Giants pass rush)"
Really? You sure about that? First, let me say this, the 49ers offensive line is not only good, but they are TOUGH and they love getting physical (they play down hill). This offense also counters a pass rush with the run and they do it well; I don't think the Giants have seen a SOLID rushing team since they played the 49ers, Philly, & New Orleans in consecutive weeks (and they got slapped by all of them). Guess what else; It's not just Alex Smith who is going up against a brutal pass rush. I'll put the 49ers 44 sacks this season up against the Giants 28 sacks any day of the week. Eli is also going to see a wicked pass rush on Sunday. Rain and wet fields tend to slow down the pass rush and makes it harder to get to the QB.
The Niners play in the NFC West and the Giants play in the East. Therefore, their 9-7 is just like the 49ers 13-3.
I mention this last because this is the dumbest, most ridiculous statement I have probably read (in this weekend's USA today). Lets compare schedule strengths shall we? The 49ers have played 7 playoff teams this year (and are 6-1 against them(. They beat the Saints, Lions, Giants, Bengals, & Steelers and lost to the Ravens on a short week on the Road in Baltimore. The Giants played 5 games against playoff teams. They are 2-3 against those 5 teams (INCLUDING THE 49ERS). So, who really has the tougher schedule here and who is having the better season?
Here's what I see coming.....
This is exactly the type of game the 49ers LOVE to play. They want a dirty, physical battle in the rain and mud. They want to smack the Giants in the mouth and send them packing. The 49ers running all over the Giants and the Giants inability to stop the 49ers run game will make all the difference in this game...
49ers: 24 - Giants: 13.
Now, lets move on to what I expect to see from Tim Tebow next season.......(again just kidding).... :funny:
That's my 100% biased writeup and opinion on the NFC Championship...

Louie, this is by far one of the BEST write-ups I've seen leading up to this game. I couldn't agree more with EVERYTHING you said. I know you mentioned the tackling of our special teams, but I want to highlight one of the best kickers in the league, "Andy Lee". Andy has been absolutely amazing this year, pinning teams within their 10-yard line all season! Unfortunately, we were forced to punt for those times, but the ability to pin the teams so close to the goal line has helped the Niners keep opponents points off the board and therefore win games!
I have so jazzed for tomorrow's game and the opportunity to be at the Stick witnessing more Niner history, that I'm not even sure I'll be able to sleep tonight.
Thanks again for your valuable and extremely credible insight! GO NINERS!!!!

I know my team and know them well...and they CAN beat this giants team down....
Yea, I give lots of credit the special teams as a whole.
No Question: Andy has been one of our best defensive weapons all season. The kickers have been OUTSTANDING; and thats why they're in the pro bowl.
As I said with Field Goals...They're POINTS. A lot of teams miss those field goals.
Whenever we kick a Field Goal, we get Tony & Moose saying; "their red zone struggles continue. The Saints are just a play away".
When the Giants kick a field goal, it's joe buck saying; "that drive had a lot bit of everything and they cap it off with 3".
I almost feel like they want to be right (more then anything) when the talking heads pick against the Niners (and talk about their weaknesses). I also feel like when they can't find anything to knock on the 49ers team, they knock their "Red Zone Performance" as it's the low hanging fruit (all teams kick field goals).
Yea man, I am totally jealous. I was looking at ticket prices and plane tickets and I was like "Fuck. I just can't do this (esp. by myself)"
Make that bitch shake and bring the noise. Pump up everyone around you. Any and all Giants fans will feel all alone in "our fortress"....
It's time to finally show who OWNS the NFC Once and for all!!!
Yea, I am kinda pumped for this one too.... :funny:

We've heard that at least 15 times this year....
fluky and lucky....defines the niners yea...for sure...
By the way, didn't the Saints demolish you?
Oh yea, and didn't we beat you already?
Giants aren't in any position to talk smack.
Keep falling back on your "fluky" and "lucky" wins vs the Packers and Pats

Just going to sit back and giggle at this mini gmen/niner brawl. Cannot disagree with every well documented point louie and bn make for the niners, as for the giants jpp is doing his own smashing around when on the field. The best thing to happen to the giants is Peyton being off all season. He is probably living the season through Eli and coaching him as a brother should. Eli has gotten very like Peyton, reading and changing calls at the line this year , not an accident. However more pluses for the niners in this game along with home field.
49rs win and cover!!!!!!:cool:

sorry ty, but this type of comment is giant fan banter to me; "I don't see you getting 200 yards on us". I look at this as basically the type of stuff I answered above with actual facts to back them up. Given there is some of that banter (descriptive phrases in a biased writeup) from me in this thread, but it's my thread and my pick. Feel free to start your own on why you like the Giants. I like that your appreciating the matchup. My best buddy is a Saints fans and still won't get over the loss. Anyway, That's a good point you made about Peyton, beak. I's The first good point for the Giants in this thread.
Payton can't strap em on for Eli and play the game for him (or give him his abilities to run an offense and throw a dart on a skinny post).
But, I'll also make the same point they make about Alex Smith (even though I think our schedule has been absurdly tougher then the NFC Least schedules)....
Eli Manning has looked great against some weaker defenses, but who's the best defense this team has seen? Patriots and Packers...lol. What good playoff defense has Eli seen this year besides the Niners (again, where he lost).
Anyway, Payton's def. not allowed to coach in the Giants personnel areas as I believe it's considered tampering. But, we all know the phone calls and occasional film discussion chats are there. That's for sure. That family talks a lot of football.
I will make three contrasting points here;
(1)....
The niners are going bring a whole variety of defensive looks to get him off his game and get pressure on him; just like Pierre Paul and the giants will try to do to Alex. The difference I see is that the 49ers SHUT DOWN the run (always) and make teams one dimensional (which I think will put it ALL on Eli Manning shoulders, JUST LIKE THE FIRST TIME).
(2)...
Jim Harbaugh always always brings a solid gameplan.
From Johnette Howard of ESPN.com [/COLOR];
"San Francisco's dramatic 36-32 win had more to do with the art of the game plan than luck. More precisely, the win came on a play installed just four days earlier based on a tiny nuance about the Saints' defense plucked from the sort of elephantine memory bank that every good coach tries to develop. Sharp-eyed San Francisco quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst said he'd remembered from his previous NFL stop with the Carolina Panthers that Saints safety Roman Harper has a tendency to be caught "flatfooted" when defending certain passes on the goal line. That's it"
They do the same thing on the defensive side of the ball....
In the same article;
Casual fans might think of offenses having more sophisticated game plans than defenses, but Mark Bowen, a former safety for four NFL teams who now writes about strategy for the National Football Post website and other publications, says some defensive game plans on his teams "were the size of college textbooks." They went light years beyond the usual down-and-distance stuff and included minutia like timing how many seconds elapsed between when New England's Tom Brady lifts his leg while awaiting a snap and when the ball arrives in his hands. "It was 2.2 seconds," Bowen says.
The Niners work on these little things....
(3)...
In conclusion (for good), I think if you ignore all the media talk and don't listen to any "expert" (I use that word loosely) predictions at all; and just go on the straight facts of this season, there's really no comparison (based on this season's data) on which side to bet here. There's no "magic" in either of these teams and it's not a cinderella story (unless the NFL wants to let the officials decide the games). This is the same game/sport that you handicap every week in the fall; but I like it even more as the public is going against the data (why I've been teasing the Niners in their matchups against playoff teams this year).
I will be extremely surprised if the Giants win this game...I really will...The oddsmakers have the 49ers favorite for a reason (cause they know if they made the Giants a favorite, they'd get flooded with sharp bettor Niner action). I look at the 49ers as playing the underdog role (as the favorite).
I truly love the anti-public home favorite (and I love the niners). This is a no brainer for me. Take the 49ers beak and lay the 2 and smile (knowing you put your money where the sharps are), sit back and watch that same hard hitting 49er team take it to the Giants AGAIN....

That was so hard to take....
Kyle Williams hands over the game...responsible for 10 points....bradshaw fumble (gimmie a break)..
So many big plays by the defense, 6 sacks, near interceptions...God wasn't shining on us tonight...
Absolutely brutal...

Most depressing drive home I've ever had!

Most depressing drive home I've ever had! It's ok...Not the first time we lost an NFC championship game. But, it does suck and we'll figure out a way to get over it.... I thought my analysis was dead on and the Niners were going to win 24-17 when Bradshaw fumbled on their 20 with 2 mins to go. They ruled forward progress, even though the ball came out before the whistle.
I don't know why the media rags on Alex Smith so much. Him and Eli mannings numbers were similar...Both 2TDs, Manning threw for a few more yards (300 to 200), but he also threw twice as many passes. Whatever.
Next year we add Dwane Bowe and win the Superbowl!!!

Ed Hawkalie's group is known to blow the whistle to quickly! The entire stadium was going nuts when they were showing the fumble on the big screen. Yes, Kyle Williams blew it big time, but so did our WR's. I like the thought of Bowe, but we need more than just him.
Overall, it was a great game. Niners played an AMAZING season. Harbaugh and his staff did an amazing job. I'm proud to be a Niner fan!!!

The entire stadium was going nuts when they were showing the fumble on the big screen. !I watched the replay 20 times and I'll show you the video of it. The ball is out before the whistle. They weren't blowing the whistle early on any other plays.... especially alex smith sacks.....I hate that we can't get calls in our stadium because we're playing the Giants.
Coach Jim Harbaugh on the call late in the fourth quarter when referees ruled that Giants RB Bradshaw forward progress had been stopped before his fumble: “It looked like a fumble. Every play in the game except that one was played out to the conclusion of the play.”
AGAIN...There was no whistle before the fumble. Why can't they review weather the ball came out before the whistle?

I also think the running plays were working (except for the shotgun draws which somehow the Niners were tipping the D off) and we should have ran the ball a lot more in the late 4th quarter when we had chances to win.

I'm also still not sure that Ball hit Kyle Williams....I didn't see any clear INDISPUTABLE VIDEO evidence that it hit him.

I was listening to KNBR (local Bay Area sports talk radio) on the drive home and they all agreed that we need help in the WR department. V. Davis is truly amazing, but let's not forget that he's a TE playing as a WR. To be quite honest, I still don't understand why we cut Braylon Edwards? Our running game is top notch. We need some senior leadership in the WR dept and we will then be a 100% Super Bowl contender!

I disagree. I don't think Harbaugh will cut Williams. Let's not forget that Smith was invited back by Harbaugh, when everyone else doubted his ability. Look at Smith now. Mistakes happen. Unfortunately, Williams made more than 1 BIG mistake last night, arguably the reason why the Niners are not in the SB! However, I believe Williams will be invited back. He will work harder than anyone else on the team during the offseason. Shit, he'll probably glue a football to his hands now through August!!! The dude is fast....he did have one return, which "almost" resulted in a TD...damn NYG kicker tackled him by his shoelace!!!!
