For those of you who take your wagering seriously, here are the best and worst Football Wagers you can make. We are talking about straight wagers, beause any tease or parlay bet is worse than any straight wager. The more teams you have to take, the worse the odds get for you. The BEST wager you can make is the MONEY line wager on a PRO team that is a 1 to 2 1/2 point DOG. By taking the money line, the amount you will win will far exceed the occasional team that fails to cover such a spread. The difference is the 11/10 you lay on the points bet, compared to the odds you receive by taking a dog on a money line wager. Since 2000, 140 games have been decided by 1 to 2-1/2 points with the dogs winning 75 and losing 65. The dogs have only covered 2 of those 65 losses if you took the points. The difference is 77 units in favor of the money line.
The WORST wager you can make is the UNDERS in College Football. The reason is simple. It is the College Football Overtime Rules. Example: A week from Saturday, on 9/18, the two SEC Tiger teams (Auburn and LSU) get together on the plains in Auburn Alabama. Both teams stress "D" and the running game. So if the Over/Under is around 44 1/2 points, you would think that this is a no brainer. Even at 24-20, the unders cover. While all of this is true, there is a ringer. Auburn and LSU yawn their way to a 13-13 tie in regulation. That is only 26 points, but unlike the Pro's, each team gets a shot at scoring in overtime in the college game. Now the average number of points scored by both teams in an overtime is 23. Bye-bye unders. If they both score a total of 19 points, the unders still lose.
So remember. Grab the money line in the Pros when the odds are +1-2 1/2 on your team, and forget about the Unders in College Football. The difference will not make you rich, but may make you a winner instead of a loser.
