TARVER VS JOHNSON
THE QUEST FOR THE BEST ENDS UP WITH THE ROAD WARRIOR FINISHING ON TOP AS THE RING BELT HOLDER.
Well fight fans, the last major boxing event of the year is now officially over, and I for one am totally satisified with what I saw tonight. There is no doubt about it, the year 2004 was the year of the upset, and tonight's main event proved to be an ironic if not prophetic ending to a year filled with thrilling victories, agonizing defeats and more than a few barn burning donney brooks. How fitting indeed is it that Glen Johnson- who usually loses close decision bouts as regularly as John Kerry shifted blame for the war in Iraq- pulled out a narrow win, razor thin decision. It is ironic that Johnson likely nailed down the fighter of the year and upset(s) of the year in back to back fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Here is a quick synopsis of all the undercard action, and of course the recap of the main event.
Vinny Maddalone (21-2, 15 KO’s) vs. Ronnie Smith (6-31, 6 KO’s.
8 Round Heavyweight bout
In the preliminary bout of the evening, New York's Vinny Maddalone (22-2) won a dull and lucklaster decision victory over Los Angeles' own Ronnie Smith (6-32) by unanimous decision scores of 60-54 (on all three official scorecards). As best as I can tell, just about everyone in the Staples Center worked there while this fight took place. I suspect more people wanted to see Shaquille O'Neal knockout Koby Bryant (who was on hand with his wife Vanessa whom he alleges Karl Malone hit on). Well, they don't call it the left coast and Lost Angel(eles) for nothing folks! Maddalone is a journeyman at best, and sleep walked through this bout.
Pre-fight prediction- Maddalone TKO 2 Smith; doghouseboxing.com prognosticator 1-0.
