    From the Article:
The bill falls short of adding clarity to an already existing 1961 Wire Act that prohibits betting via phone across state lines and failed to apply that law to gambling on the web. This is being viewed as a slight victory for the online gambling community as it is now unlikely such revisions will ever be added in the future.
This is what I mean about the being able to get around the laws. It doesn't really say anything more then what the banks have already been told.

I see anything that comes from this as being a temporary inconvience, if that. Louie's right in that it would be very difficult for banks to even enforce. There are too many ways around it. I'm hoping this gets taken out before this law goes into effect, but even if it doesn't it won't be the end of internet gambling as we know it. Frankly, I think within the next few years internet gambling will be legalized and regulated in the US and we will all be the better for it. Good discussion by the way.

    Special K,
I hope you are right more then anything in the world. But, I don't think it will happen in even the next 10 years. As for the bill, this is merely congress doing what they always do, sneaking a bill in (that won't be passed) in with another bill (that has to pass) in order to get it through. It's a joke that they even do this. The more I read, the more I believe that this bill has no teeth at all.

Horseracing, lotteries, bingo halls, and Casino games are ok where you lose your money in less then 1 minute. But, don't you dare bet $50 on a football game on Sunday. Wait, its ok to bet $50 on a football, just make sure you do it in Vegas or with a local bookie.

I'm just going to keep adding to this thread because it makes me more angry everytime I look at it.

Cigerettes & Booze are ok. But, betting $50 on Sunday destroys our childrens lives. I have yet to hear a story about a childs life being destroyed by Bodog.

    Philip & Morris = Good
    Anhieser Busch = Good

    Bodog = Bad

MAKES A LOT OF SENSE DOESN'T IT?

It is ridiculous.. Do you think that is because some of the older congresspeople have a fear/lack of knowledge of the internet? They just hear these stores of people losing their retirement thru the computer....1984 in 2006...this is only the beginning....

That pretty much saying it...look what else our great government is trying to do

    http://www.savetheinternet.com/

and if this happens it could be the end of online gambling as the government could pay all isp's to block these site...

Yeah, I hate how at the last minute they put this crap on a very popular bill. I hate how some of these politicians call gambling a disease that tears apart the fabric of society, but yet only try to ban one type of gambling. How is playing the lottery, or betting on horse racing any more righteous than betting on sports online or playing online poker? I absolutely hate seeing blatant hypocrisy just shoved in my face. If for some reason a politician were against all forms of gambling and was trying to outlaw even the lottery, shut down the Kentucky Derby, and ban even legal casinos in Vegas and anywhere else that might make more sense. I would obviously be strongly against this politician's views, however, at least if he were trying to claim this moral high ground against gambling he would be completely against it in all forms.

While I'll admit online gambling has destroyed some people's lives, it's not as if the lottery, betting the ponies, or going to Vegas hasn't destroyed others. Or for that matter alcohol, cigarettes, or even fucking McDonalds. I hate this whole moral high ground stance taken by some people. It just aggravates me that there is such a pronounced double standard here where certain forms of gambling are good and others are bad. I could just as easily drive over to Louisville for the Kentucky Derby and blow my life savings as I could blow it on internet gambling. But yet they make out the Kentucky Derby to be some wholesome event since it has lots of tradition and is as American as apple pie. Don't get me wrong, in no way do I want the Kentucky Derby to be banned. I'm just making a point.

Sorry about this rant, just was reading up more on the bill and it makes me irate. The only good thing is this is by no means the apacolypse of online gambling, or even close. I just think we all need to speak up now when the legislation is weaker, before it has a chance to possibly gain any more momentum and become much, much worse. And Louie, I was probably being optimistic of online gambling becoming legalized in the next few years, but I still see things eventually moving in the direction of legalization as opposed to making the online gambler a criminal. You're probably more right in that it won't be fully legalized even within the next ten years though. Too many hypocritical politicians trying to punch their ticket to a higher place of power.

    NETTELLER ANNOUNCEMENT
US Member Update: 1st October 2006

On Friday 29 September 2006, the US Congress passed legislation which includes certain provisions to prohibit unlawful internet gambling through the restriction of payments to such sites.

The Bill states that there will be a period of up to 9 months for the US regulators to prescribe regulations requiring each designated payment system and all participants therein to identify and block or otherwise prevent or prohibit restricted transactions.

It is currently unclear how NETELLER, a European company, with no assets, presence or employees in the US, would be affected by this bill. Once the regulations have been written, NETELLER will have a clearer view of which companies are affected, how those companies will be expected to comply, and any possible resulting impact on NETELLER and its US facing business.

NETELLER continues to operate its business as normal.

Over 3 million customers in 160 countries trust NETELLER to transfer over $7 billion each year. The company is authorized in the UK by the Financial Services Authority and listed on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange. To protect its customers’ money, all deposited, in-transit, and un-cleared funds are held in Trust Accounts
