Hope you're staying dry Louie, from what I've heard the media went a little overboard with this hurricane. You'll have to let us midwesterners know how bad it really was. Hope you're safe and good luck. (take a look at the bronco's tonight too, bigger play for me tonight)

Hey Beeee dub....

I am actually glad that you asked. It will give me something to do on my iPhone.....sitting here without power as I type this. However, before my power went out permanently (after hours of it going on and off), I was watching the news coverage of this storm. I had actually been watching the hurricane coverage since Thursday as I can't get enough of it at times.

As you know, I'd be the very first guy in the room to criticize the media and the news if I felt they deserved my scorn. However, in my opinion, these hurricanes aren't to be taken lightly. I like that the news hypes up the danger as I feel it saves lives. I think a lot people are arrogant and refuse to believe bad things can happen to them when it comes to stuff like this.

As far as what we have got of the storm in my area...
I am about 120 miles northwest of NYC (northeast corner of Pennsylvania). As i type this message, i believe the eye of the storm (which has weakened) is passing through NYC right now and heading up to the mass/conn area. I am also in the mountains. Therefore. I expected the mountains to break up the wind and for us to not really be effected by this in a big way.

However, I've honestly never seen wind like this here or seen this much debris scattered all over the roads. My power's been out for three hours now (using the Cappersinfo iPhone app with battery pack for the iPhone). It's also been raining for 11 straight hours now and the wind continues to howl. I hear the fire dept siren go off every 15 mins and ambulance sirens every now and again (I don't live in a very urban area either). Again, I've never experienced a storm like this in my life (definitely my first time seeing anything close to a hurricane)

Anyway...
I got bored (I hate iPhone games) and i got in my car to take a quick look at some of the other neighborhoods and main streets in my town. And of course people are driving around here like it's any other day (except for all the swerving/quick braking to avoid tree limbs as well as the debris and the other crap all over the roads).

So, I grabbed a cup and coffee at the DunkinDonuts and drove back home. (I didn't want to be a hypocrite when I call the other people who go out in storms like this idiots). It also didn't seem that safe driving around with the pouring rain and trees swaying back and forth (friggin tree or whatever else could land on my car at any given moment). When I pulled up to my driveway back at my house, I noticed a decent size tree (at least 20 feet in height) laying in my back yard that was taken down from the wind (I'll try adding a photo with the app)

The pouring rain and loud ass, howling wind hitting my house continues. I looked at the doppler and it doesn't seems like its going to slow down for another 2-3 hours)

More importantly, I also know it's lot worse in areas along the coast. I also guarantee that coastal towns in jersey n' new york are going to see a lot of flooding as we are getting buckets of rain. Flooding isn't a problem in the moutains.

As far as all the public officials ordering evacuations and whatnot....
Obviously the politicians needed to be on their game with evacuation and shelter plans. None of them want to be hammered like Ray Naygin was after Katrina (or like mayor Bloomberg was after that snowstorm when he didn't shut down the subways).

Overall I think it was good that the news and the public officials scared some people. After all, it's better to over-prepare then to under-prepare for something like this.

I wonder how it's going to effect our economy on Monday. Today I'm watching the storm...tomorrow I can watch my investments continue to go into the crapper :moneyburn:

Let this post be a reminder of how much we rely on electricity and how bored (and drunk) one can get without it!

I'm glad everything worked out alright, do you have your power back on? Is there any time table for that? From what I hear that's one of the biggest problems post Irene.

Yea, My power was only out for a little bit. However, some of my neighbors had their power out for a good 30 hours. I guess there is like 3 million people still without power now.

That looks pretty damn serious. Did he say anything else about it? It looks like it's still pretty far out and there is no telling what it could do.
