Sunday NFL Football Analysis: The New England Patriots host the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
The Patriots are coming off a dramatic 35-31 come from behind win over Baltimore, coming back from two 14 point deficits. Tom Brady connected with Brandon LaFell for a 23 yard touchdown pass to seal the win for New England. The Patriots defense ended Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco’s streak of no interceptions in 6 playoff games by picking off Flacco 2 times. Indianapolis is coming off a 24-13 victory over Denver in what was the lone upset of the divisional round. Andrew Luck passed for 265 yards on 27 of 43 passing with 2 touchdowns. The Indianapolis defense was impressive, limiting Peyton Manning to just 211 yards passing, and allowing just 88 yards rushing.
These two teams met in week 11 in Indianapolis, with New England winning 42-20. It was a game that saw New England running back Jonas Gray rush for 201 for 4 touchdowns. New England has won the past 3 matchups by more than 20 points, and it just seems that Bill Belichick has Andrew Luck’s number. What Indianapolis has done is impressive, but you have to take a look at their past 2 playoff wins. They defeated Andy Dalton and Cincinnati, a team that had no offense with A.J. Green out and was an absolute mess. The next week they beat Denver, but how? It was revealed that Peyton Manning had a quad injury, and it sure looked like it as Manning looked absolutely awful. What Indianapolis has done is impressive, but let’s not get too excited about this team, it’s not like they’ve had the toughest road. While the Colts defense has been good, it was against Andy Dalton and an injured Peyton Manning. Now they face the Patriots, by far the most complete team in the AFC. Not only that, this will be the Colts fourth road game in five weeks, that’s a pretty tough spot for any team. Not only that, you now have a distraction with linebacker Josh McNary being charged with rape…never a good thing. New England is just too good, and while Indianapolis has a lot of momentum, I think it comes to a screeching halt on Sunday. New England got their wakeup call last weekend, and I don’t see the defense playing sluggish in the first half like they were against Baltimore. Expect New England to have success running the ball as before, even with their starting center out. I do however think this time around they’ll be allot more balanced on offense, which means a healthy dose of the passing game. I expect this game to be somewhat close, but I see the Patriots pulling away in the second half. Expect the Patriots to advance to Super Bowl XLIX.
