Kansas City Chiefs at Philadelphia Eagles
Date and Time: Thursday 9/19/13 at 8:30pm on NFL Network
Game Line: Philadelphia Eagles -3 (from 5Dimes)
Preview: Boy what a difference an offseason makes for these two teams. The Chiefs and Eagles combined for 6 wins in 2012 and will both surpass that number with ease this season. The return of Andy Reid to Philadelphia will get no shortage of press coverage, he has proven he is a quality NFL coach and the combination of his addition and QB Alex Smith have the Chiefs 2-0 and in the early hunt for a playoff spot. The Eagles continue to run plays early and often and have had some degree of success through two games. The San Diego Chargers had some success slowing them down by maximizing the time between plays, using the entire play clock and giving their defense a chance to rest. This strategy should be employed by any team facing the Eagles this year. Jamaal Charles will see a heavy workload in an effort to burn the clock and keep Mike Vick and company on the sidelines. Alex Smith’s dink-and-dunk, turnover free brand of quarterbacking should also help the Chiefs keep up and take advantage of a very mediocre Eagles defense. On the other side of the football, Kansas City can’t keep Philadelphia from running a high number of plays but they do have the playmakers to get their defense off the field quickly. The Chiefs defense will be the best the Eagles have seen. They have the cover corners, the size up front and the linebackers who can track down LeSean McCoy on the outside. As weeks go on teams will have a better understanding of how to minimize the Eagles offense and the Chiefs will lay the blueprint for that here.
Chiefs vs. Eagles Free NFL Pick: Chiefs +3 and over 50.5
Kansas City vs. Philadelphia Game Score Prediction: 28-23 Chiefs
What to expect in this week 3 NFL matchup: The Chiefs will be the most successful defensive unit to face the Eagles offense so far this season. They will have more luck getting off the field quickly and limiting the long drives from the Eagles offense, holding them to field goals. Offensively, the Chiefs will use a heavy dose of Jamaal Charles to milk the clock and keep their defense on the sidelines. They should also use some of what San Diego had success with, long cadences and slow play calls to allow the clock to tick and limit the number of times Chip Kelley’s offense will get the football. Alex Smith will limit the turnovers and score on a few long drives to help give his team the victory.
