July 10th MLB Picks: Oakland Athletics @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Date: Wednesday, March 10th, 7:05 ET
Location: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, PA
Athletics vs. Pirates On TV: ESPN
Oakland Athletics (Tom Milone) +118
Pittsburgh Pirates (Francisco Liriano) -128
The first two games in this series between the A’s and the Pirates have both been 2-1 score lines, and there is little way that we think any of that is going to change in this one. Pittsburgh has never had any success scoring runs whatsoever against Oakland (in fact, it has never even won a game against Oakland either!), and LHP Tom Milone should make sure that stays the case as long as he keeps the ball inside of PNC Park. Milone has had some troubles with the long ball this year, but he is pitching in the AL West, where there are a ton of mashers. Pittsburgh only ranks 17th in the game in total home runs this year, and there aren’t any real mashers to worry about on a nightly basis, though there are plenty that certainly can take one yard if need be. The real key to this ‘under’ though, is the way that LHP Francisco Liriano has been pitching. He has an ERA of just 2.20, and he has more strikeouts (74) than innings pitched (69.2). This was clearly one of the best free agent pickups that didn’t cost much in baseball this year, and Liriano is proving that he has what it takes to return to the form that he had when he was a dynamite pitcher for the Minnesota Twins. What’s even better here for the Pirates is that this current collection of A’s is only batting .228 against Liriano lifetime, and between them all, they only have four doubles and no home runs. Bank of this one staying beneath the ‘total’ on Wednesday night.
