The ALDS continues with Game 4 on Thursday, and that means that we are going to be making our baseball picks and playoff predictions for the game between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles.

The Orioles are officially on the brink of elimination after losing in extra innings last night. Could that have been the finale of the season, though? Jim Johnson blew another save and clearly can’t be counted on to end games, and the bats just aren’t going to be able to keep up with the Yankees’ lineup.

About the only good news here for the O’s is that they aren’t at a huge Game 4 disadvantage on the mound as they were in Game 3 and will be in Game 5 if that’s what it comes down to. Phil Hughes will get the ball for the Yanks, and he is clearly the least of the four pitchers that are in the rotation, and if Baltimore is going to get to have a chance to force a decisive game against him. Joe Saunders will get the ball for Manager Buck Showalter, and he hasn’t taken the ball since the one-game Wild Card playoff against the Rangers.

It just doesn’t look like the Orioles can win this series at this point. Blowing a lead in the ninth was a disaster, and giving it up in extras probably finished them. Had this been a +160 set of MLB odds or something of the sorts, perhaps we would be willing to back Baltimore. However, we don’t think that Saunders and Hughes are really all that much different from one another, and that being said, the -140 price seems to be at least 10 cents short of what the Yankees really should be.
