Our 2012 MLB playoffs picks continue on Friday night in Washington, where the Washington Nationals battle it out with the St. Louis Cardinals. Join us for our MLB predictions for what should be a remarkable Game 5 of the NLDS.

The Nationals and the Cardinals are going to be squaring off in this one, and no matter which team loses, the question is going to be asked, “What might have been?” What might have been had the Cardinals not lost Chris Carpenter in the Spring with an elbow injury that took him out for the mass majority of the season? What might have been had the Nationals not shut down Stephen Strasburg, and he was the man that was on the mound in the biggest game in the history of arguably the entire franchise?

But instead of Carpenter and Strasburg, we get to see Gio Gonzalez and Adam Wainwright. Neither pitcher made it through the sixth inning in Game 1 when they met each other, and the game was highlighted by a St. Louis error that brought in two unearned runs, and the fact that Gonzalez threw 110 pitches in five innings, just 59 of which were strikes. He walked seven and was very, very lucky to only leave the game behind 2-1.

In the end though, Wainwright knows what it is like to be the last line of defense in a World Series run. He has been here and done this. Gonzalez never has, and neither have so many of the bats in this series for Washington. The Nationals will have their time soon, but that time isn’t quite now yet. St. Louis is the far grittier team, it’s the far more experienced team, and more often than not, it wins this game and moves on to the NLCS.
