There was a great debate during most of the end of the season as to what in the heck the Cardinals were going to do with their last starting pitching spot. They are turning the ball over to RHP Michael Wacha in the biggest game of the season. Wacha was a beast in his last start of the year against the Washington Nationals, as he allowed just one hit in 8.2 innings of work, and he missed out on a no-hitter by just one batter. That said, this is only going to be the 10th start in the bigs for Wacha, and we aren’t all that sure that the 22-year old has it in him.
That said, we aren’t sure that RHP Charlie Morton is really in that much better shape. Morton had a great season this year for the Bucs, going 7-4 with a 3.26 ERA, and the team went 12-8 in his 20 starts this year. However, this isn’t the man that you really want to be counting on when push comes to shove in a playoff game. Still, St. Louis being favored in this game on the road is ridiculous. The Pirates don’t have the better team, but they do have a comparable pitcher on the mound in this one, and they have a crowd that is really going to get on a youngster’s case early. Once that moment starts rolling, the Jolly Roger will be raised, and the Pirates will be in the NLCS when the day is said and done with.
