The 2012 MLB playoffs continue on Sunday in San Francisco, where the San Francisco Giants and the Cincinnati Reds are going to do battle with one another. Don’t miss our MLB playoff picks and our Reds vs. Giants Game 1 NLDS predictions for the baseball playoffs!
The Giants and Reds are probably going to make for the most intriguing series over the course of the first full round of the playoffs, and it is for pitching matchups like this one. Matt Cain and Johnny Cueto aren’t going to be in the Cy Young running this year, but these two are clearly two of the best pitchers in the entire league. Cain led his team to a 21-11 record this year. Cueto one-upped him at 22-11.
There is a real question though, as to which one of these teams is the better of the two. Many think that the Giants are the ones that are going to have the upper hand in this one, but we know that the Reds are stacked, especially in the bullpen, and if this becomes a short game that goes inning by inning, we know that Cincinnati is going to be the team that is going to be able to last longer and deeper even though San Francisco is the team that has the playoff experience.
Ultimately though, we are going to be playing the ‘over’ in Game 1. Neither Cueto nor Cain have had fantastic postseasons in the past, and neither has pitched well against the other team this year. Cain has two losses against the Reds, and Cueto has one against the Giants. We’re not saying that this is going to be a 7-6 shootout, but there is no reason to believe that both of these lineups, which quietly were amongst the top half of the lineups in baseball for the majority of the season, won’t put up at least three runs. This is a pitching matchup that is just too tough for us to handicap.
