MLB betting fans can dig right into another fantastic battle on the baseball odds on Saturday afternoon in the Windy City, as the Chicago Cubs take on the Chicago White Sox in the second game of a crucial three game set.
MLB Preview: Chicago White Sox @ Chicago Cubs
Date: Saturday, July 2nd, 4:10 ET
Location: Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL
Game Line: White Sox -105/Cubs -105
Television Coverage: Fox
White Sox Notes: The Pale Hose are going to have their work cut out for them to be able to win this series, as they need to win both games to get the job done after losing to the Cubs on Thursday afternoon at the Friendly Confines. The team has now dropped to three games below .500, and there is a real danger to fall out of the playoff picture right around the All-Star Break. Phillip Humber has been a pleasant surprise this year for Manager Ozzie Guillen and company, and the hope is that he can keep that up on Saturday. The righty had only started two games in his career before this year, but Chicago has definitely found a niche for him now as a back end of the rotation starter. Humber is 7-4 with a very impressive 2.89 ERA. He has 59 strikeouts in 96.2 innings of work, and though we’d like to see more K’s, we’re happy with the low walk total of just 23.
Cubs Notes: There really hasn’t been a heck of a lot good to say about the Cubs’ season this year, as they are clearly well out of the postseason picture. However, winning this series against their cross town rivals would help dramatically, something that could be had by picking up a ‘W’ on Saturday. The problem is that Matt Garza has been a terrible acquisition for the team thus far, and we have to wonder whether he’ll have his best stuff this weekend. The former member of the Tampa Bay Rays just hasn’t done well this year, going 4-6 with a questionable 4.06 ERA. The good news is that Garza has won two of his last three starts. The bad news is that he was beaten in that third start by one other than these White Sox after allowing two runs in five innings of work. Of course, it would really help if the team could give him some more run support, as 4.1 runs per game just won’t cut it, but Humber has made due this year with just a 3.9 runs per game average.
The Final Word: We’re just not all that keen about the Cubs right now even though Garza is at least pitching modestly better now than he was at the outset of the season. The South Siders badly need to salvage this series and get something out of it, and we love the fact that they are 40-16 in their last 56 Interleague games.
