Giants Notes: This is a big, big series for an offensively challenged team against a tremendous pitching staff, and the G-Men know that they are going to have their work cut out for them if they are going to inch closer to the top record in the National League. Manager Bruce Bochy is sending out his best arm on Tuesday night, that of RHP Tim Lincecum. “The Freak” has led his team to just a 12-9 record this year, and he is only 8-8 to show for his 21 starts, but the rest of his splits are just flat out awesome. He has a 1.20 WHIP and a 2.90 ERA. The big problem, though? He is only getting 3.3 runs per game of support from his club, a problem that all of the San Fran pitchers have had this season. Still, the Giants have won nine out of 12 coming into this one, and they aren’t going to go down easily, especially against their biggest competitors for their NL pennant.
Phillies Notes: The Phils though, are 23-9 in their last 32 games played on grass and 50-20 in their last 70 games played at home. This is a critical week in which they can really put away the rest of the National League and waltz away with that regular season title and home field advantage through the entire playoffs, including the World Series thanks to the NL’s win in the All-Star Game a few weeks ago. Manager Charlie Manuel is sending out RHP Vance Worley on Tuesday. Worley has been the most pleasant surprise for this team this season, going 6-1 in his 10 starts and leading the club to an 8-2 record. The youngster is really just expected to nail down the back end of the rotation with modest success, especially when you’re talking about having some of the best names in baseball covering the front end. Worley has a 2.02 ERA, one of the best in the National League, and though we know that he won’t challenge for the Cy Young Award, he is really putting up some remarkable stats, especially for a man that wasn’t expected to do much. Unlike Lincecum though, Worley is getting all sorts of run support at 5.0 runs per game.
The Final Word: We’re a little surprised that Worley isn’t an underdog in this game. That being said, “The Freak” is just too good to go against right now, and it would take a fool to play on the Phils even though Worley has been remarkable.
