The ALDS continues with Game 1 on Saturday, and that means that we are going to be making our baseball picks and playoff predictions for the game between the Detroit Tigers and the Oakland Athletics.
The great thing that the Athletics have going for them is that they have a ton of pitchers that are young and are full of life. The problem though, is that they are all very inexperienced and don’t really have the same type of chops that some of the big time arms are going to have that they run up against in this series. For example, Jarrod Parker is going to be making his very first playoff start, and he is just 23 years old. Justin Verlander has been around for seven years and eight playoff games, and he might be collecting another Cy Young Award this year.
Even when you look at the two lineups, you can’t help but be amazed at just how different the two teams really are. Name two members of the Oakland lineup. You probably can’t off the top of your head. Miguel Cabrera, Mr. Triple Crown, and Prince Fielder are the first two that come to mind for the Tigers. Top to bottom, Detroit seems like a better team, but top to bottom, it didn’t look like there was any way that the A’s were going to ultimately go on to win the AL West crown this year either.
It’s a chalky play for sure, but we have a hard time not backing the Tigers. Verlander has won four straight starts, and the team has won eight of its last 11 home games here in the second season. Oakland is only 2-5 in its last seven playoff games, but you have to go back quite a long ways before that history kicks in. The Athletics have their work cut out for them for sure just to get one of these two games here in Motown, but at least at this point, we don’t think that it is going to happen.
