Our 2012 MLB playoffs picks continue on Thursday night in Oakland, where the Oakland Athletics battle it out with the Detroit Tigers. Join us for our MLB predictions for what should be a remarkable Game 5 of the ALDS.
Game 5 of the ALDS should be a great one, as it is the consummate question as to whether you would be riding superiority from a physical standpoint or from a mental standpoint. It is clear that Detroit is going to have the physical edge in this game, knowing that it has the ace pitcher in Justin Verlander on the mound, but it is tough to argue with the momentum that Oakland has. What the A’s have isn’t nearly as tangible as Verlander is. Home field advantage is great, but the knowledge that they have created ways to win each of the last two games to stave off elimination is the more important item of business.
Verlander will be facing off with Jarrod Parker for the second time in this series on Thursday. Five days ago, these two met in a game that was clearly won by the Cy Young candidate, as he threw seven innings and allowed one run, as opposed to the 6.1 innings and three runs that Parker conceded. Verlander has now guided his team to wins in five straight starts, while Parker is appearing to break down just a bit, allowing eight walks in his last three starts and three homers in his last two.
In the end, skill should trump moxie more often than not. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule, but Verlander just isn’t going to leave this game after watching the bullpen blow it on the team and force him to pitch in this game. If Verlander is going to throw 120-130 pitches in this game, we love his chances to get this one in the win column. The Tigers only needed to win one of the three games, and it doesn’t matter which one of the three proved to be that crucial ‘W’. This will be the one for Detroit.
