The ALDS continues with Game 2 on Monday, and that means that we are going to be making our baseball picks and playoff predictions for the game between the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees.
Could we be seeing the end of the magical season for the Orioles? When push comes to shove, the answer to that one very well could be yes. The team was able to match wits with the Yankees for eight innings on Sunday night, but five runs allowed in the ninth by Jim Johnson, who was really one of the only constants this year in the Baltimore bullpen, really might signal the beginning of the end of a great season.
It’ll be up to Wei-Yin Chen and Andy Pettitte tonight for the O’s and the Yanks respectively. Chen was the only man in Manager Buck Showalter’s rotation that lasted even 25 starts this year, while Pettitte has had just three starts since returning from a two-month stint on the DL. Both of these men are lefties, and with so many lefty bats (or switch hitters) in these lineups, it should make for an interesting game for sure. The question is whether the craftiness of Pettitte is going to be able to weather the storm in Baltimore, where the fans there are playoff crazy, knowing that they haven’t seen the postseason since 1996.
In the end though, this is a series that belongs to the Bronx Bombers. Pettitte has been here and done this time and time again, while Chen has just never pitched in a spot like this. We saw it with Johnson last night – the Orioles are a hard team to trust right now, even in a de facto do or die game that could see their season really come to a close. They probably aren’t going to the Bronx and winning two out of three. They certainly aren’t sweeping three games.
