Last season, the Huskies went on a run right about this time of year to not just get themselves in the NCAA Tournament, but to ultimately go on one of the greatest runs that we have ever seen all the way to the National Championship. Right now, UConn definitely isn’t a lock to be in the dance to defend its title, but a win like this one would go quite a long ways towards making sure that it hears its name on Selection Sunday.
The Huskies are just 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall, though they at least enter this one with some momentum after a huge three-point shot at the death in overtime to beat the Villanova Wildcats on Monday. Jeremy Lamb isn’t as good as Kemba Walker was for the Huskies, but he is doing a great job this year nonetheless. He is the team’s leading scorer at 17.9 PPG, and he is closely followed by the man that knocked down the biggest shot of the season, Shabazz Napier, who is averaging 12.7 points per game.
The Orange are simply one of the best teams in the country though, and that is demonstrated clearly by the single blemish on their resume. They are well on their way to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and they probably only need one or two more wins to make sure that that is going to be the case.
Head Coach Jim Boeheim and company have a very deep team this year, and this is a squad that legitimately could be counting on as many as eight players to score in double-digits. Everyone chips in defensively as well, and the force in the middle of Fab Melo on that end of the court is what really makes a difference at times for this team.
In the end, we just don’t trust the Huskies. Sure, with College Gameday here in Storrs and one of the top teams in the country in town, the atmosphere is going to be insane, but in the end, we have seen the ‘Cuse survive a heck of a lot more than this. This is going to be a gritty game, but it is one of the likes that we know that they can win and win by a relatively comfortable margin when matters are settled.
NCAA Basketball Pick: Syracuse -5
