The Johnnies were the most shocking team to watch in the first round of the NIT, as they went on the road and beat the St. Joseph’s Hawks in spite of the fact that they were playing absolutely horrid basketball leading into the postseason. Perhaps this is something for Head Coach Steve Lavin and the gang to build off of. There is no doubt that, had this game been played four or five weeks ago, St. John’s would most certainly not have been a double digit underdog, even here in Charlottesville. We still really don’t think that it is all that warranted for the Hoos to be giving almost a dozen points. Virginia wasn’t all that convincing in its win over the Norfolk State Spartans to start off its NIT, as it was locked into an ugly game that it was never really able to fully put away. The team didn’t get to the glass and was actually beaten on the offensive boards, and about the only thing that kept the Spartans from pulling off the upset is the fact that they shot just 8-of-36 on two-point field goal attempts in that game. Even for as badly as the Johnnies have been playing, there’s no way that they’re going to do that poorly in this one. We want the points on our side, though we do recognize just how tough it is to play at John Paul Jones Arena.
