Kickoff is just a matter of a few hours away to the 2011 college football campaign, and we are taking one last look at the top teams in America that we think can win it all!
Oklahoma Sooners (+385 at Diamond Sportsbook): The Sooners are the favorites to win it all, and they are the No. 1 team in the country, but unlike some past favorites, this is a team that has some real bite. Sure, the Big XII looks stacked this year with the Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and Texas A&M Aggies floating around in the Top 10 to start off the season, and OU also has to contend with the Top 10 ranked Florida State Seminoles as well. However, we know that this team should be favored in all of its games this season, and we tend to think that it can make it all the way through unscathed. Even an early loss to a Florida State or a Texas A&M can be redeemed in a year in which not all that many teams are projected to be able to run the table. QB Landry Jones and WR Ryan Broyles are both Heisman Trophy types of players, and this could really be the key to not only cracking the Heisman, but the National Championship odds as well.
Oregon Ducks (+1500 at Diamond Sportsbook : We fail to see why the Quack Attack aren’t getting some more love this year. They really only have two games to contend with all season long, the duel at the Stanford Cardinal and the one to start off the campaign against the LSU Tigers, but even that game can be overcome, just as Oklahoma can overcome a loss to Florida State. QB Darron Thomas and RB LaMichael James are also both Heisman Trophy potentials this year, and both have the ability to put up just some insane numbers in Head Coach Chip Kelly’s offense. If Oregon was good enough to run the table last year, we just don’t see why it can’t do it again. It might have to with the East Coast bias, but we know that the U of O has the ability to do some wild things this season. 15 to 1 is a fantastic price on the NCAA football betting odds.
Alabama Crimson Tide (+500 at Diamond Sportsbook): Chalky, yes. However, the Crimson Tide are definitely contenders that are not to be messed with this year. Sure, missing out on WR Julio Jones, RB Mark Ingram, and QB Greg McElroy are bad, but there is always just a stockpile of talent at Alabama to choose from, and Head Coach Nick Saban and company shouldn’t miss a beat. This year though, the key very well could be the schedule. The road games in conference are at Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Auburn, and both LSU and Arkansas are coming into Bryant Denny Stadium. Georgia and South Carolina are dodged. The only game out of conference of note is the clash at Beaver Stadium against the Penn State Nittany Lions. Take care of that one, and it really should be clear sailing the rest of the way. Sure, the Tide could get tripped up once along the way against a Florida or MSU, but when push comes to shove, an 11-1 team that wins the SEC is playing for the BCS National Championship.
