Game Line: Oregon State -3 (from JustBet)
Tuesday’s Hawaii Bowl NCAA Football Analysis: Boise State’s historical success led them to hiring their newest coach after Chris Peterson left for Washington. Now, Boise State has a chance to add to their record book. While new head coach Bryan Harsin focuses on next season Boise State goes for a team record fifth straight post season win Tuesday night when they face a struggling Oregon State in the Hawaii Bowl. The Broncos have reached their 12th straight bowl game but this will be the first one without Christ Peterson there to coach them. Harsin was the offensive coordinator under Peterson for the Broncos for their 2006 undefeated season before leaving for Arkansas State, but he will be returning as the head coach for next season. Jay Ajayi has been a big reason for their success this season, the sophomore running back finished second in the Mountain West with 1,328 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. Another big performance from Ajayi might be necessary because Boise State isn’t sure who will be their quarterback for this game. Joe Southwick got the nod against New Mexico after missing four games with a broken right ankle. However, he only played the opening drive before Grant Hedrick took over and threw three more touchdowns. He was terrific over the four games without Southwick with 11 touchdowns and only four interceptions. The ongoing quarterback controversy while both are now healthy will be a big decision for the new coaching staff. The Oregon State Beavers defense is very strong against the pass and very weak against the run, allowing only 235 yards per game through the air but 193.2 on the ground. This could be a problem matchup with Boise State’s questionable passing attack and very strong run game. Offensively, Oregon State has one of the best receivers in the country in Brandin Cooks who set a PAC-12 record with 120 catches this season. If quarterback Sean Mannion can play consistent football, which he has had problems with the season, they should be able to score enough to keep up with Boise State in what should be a higher scoring game than most are anticipating.
Oregon State vs Boise State NCAA Football Picks: Boise State +3 and over 64
Oregon State vs Boise State Game Prediction: 38-30 Boise State
What to expect in the 2013 Hawaii Bowl: Both offenses in this game have stregnths that play right into the weakness against the opposing defense. Boise State’s running game has been their strong point all season and Oregon State can’t stop the run. Boise State’s problem on defense has been the lack of shut down corner and Oregon State has the best reciever in the PAC-12. This should lead to a high scoring game, with the advantage going to the team that can run the ball more effectively in Boise State. The Broncos will welcome their new head coach with a big win in the teams 12th straight bowl game.
