Matchup: Michigan at Notre Dame (-4.5 at JustBet)
Date/Time: Saturday, September 6th @ 7:30 PM (EST)
Location: South Bend, IN (airing on NBC)
Preview: The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will be looking to get a little bit of revenge as they take on the Michigan Wolverines in the final chapter of one of the more storied rivalries in college football. Senior quarterback Everett Golson made his return after sitting out last season due to an academic suspension. Golson made quite an impressive return last Saturday, completing 14 of 22 passes for 295 yards and 2 TD’s while rushing for 3 more scores. Golson was quite the factor in his sophomore season when leading his team to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the BCS championship game.
Michigan took care of business last week, taking care of Appalachian State 52-14. Devon Gardner passed for 170 yards completing 13 of 14 passes while sophomore Derrick Green rushed for 170 yards on just 15 carries.Sophomore De’Veon Smith also contributed with 115 yards on 8 attempts with 2 scores. The Wolverines avenged their 2007 upset loss to the Mountaineers and pretty much has their way with the Mountaineers, not allowing a score until midway through the 3rd quarter.
This will be the last game between the schools due to Notre Dame electing to discontinue the series between the two. Michigan has dominated the series as of late, winning 4 out of the last 5 meetings. Notre Dame’s last win came in 2012, in South Bend with Golson at the helm. Michigan has had their struggles on the road under head coach Brady Hoke, losing 8 of 14 road contests. Michigan has a wide variety of playmakers, the two talented running backs Smith and Green, and wide receiver Devon Funchess, who has 3 scores last week. Michigan had an impressive showing last week, but lets not jump the gun here, it was Appalachian State, a team that won just 4 games out of the Sun Belt conference last season. They lost two key players on the offensive line, and their defense can still be had. This was evident as they gave up 152 yards rushing to the Mountaineers last week. Notre Dame has the advantage on the sideline, in the trenches, and has the better defense and quarterback. At first glance one would like to take the dog here, as the underdog has been money in the previous meetings. I just think Notre Dame is too talented for a Michigan bunch that has had its struggles on the road.
